In 2010 the hall of fame started the rule of no family member to speak poshtumously.

You can argue whether the NFL suggested this but this is not new and the HOF allegedly runs independently from the nfl

It's dumb but was in place before Seau even committed suicide

The popular theory is that they put this rule in place because they could see inductions of former players like Seau who had suffered from CTE coming down the pike- in fact he's only the second player inducted for whom the rule has applied. Not sure if I buy that, but with the NFL I'm not sure they deserve the benefit of the doubt on CTE. Especially since the rule seems kind of pointless and heartless otherwise.

Hinton, Borcas and Holly Anderson have funny, irreverant attitudes about college football. I don't follow the game very much but I usually read their stuff.

I can't imagine ever thinking "I really need to know what Rome thinks about this sports topic" but I suppose there are a lot of bros out there.
Do you think that about any talking head?
I really like Simmons and Sal. They watch a lot of ball and they're not stupid. Plus they have fun.
I like Simmons and Sal because they are stupid. It's a great change of pace when you don't have analysts trying to out think or analyze the other. Just billshutting about sports and trying to find the betting angle and eventually failing like everyone else.
Agreed. But in amongst it all is the fact that they're long time fans who've learned a thing or two. They'll often call out shaky teams or sleepers before it becomes the norm. Just big-picture, eyeball stuff, but sometimes other, more invested analysts out-think themselves. I wouldn't want to just listen to those two, but they're valuable.

And as you say, they're fun.

This is the time of year that I'd be looking forward to the Simmons and Sal podcasts on team Over/Unders and hit/miss predictions. I haven't seen any news that this will be coming back in any format.

DEfinitely.

Totally sucks we're getting zero NFL gambling podcasts pre-season.

from simmons on his instagram:

sptguy33Sal wins Week 2 of "Guess The Lines" 6-5 (4 ties, no Balt-Oak line). Tied at 1-1 for season. One more week of this, then we make our dramatic podcast return for Week 4 at 12:01am on October 1st. Details to come.

I follow Barnwell and Mays on Twitter so I saw a pic they posted of the two of them at their live podcast taping. Seems like Barnwell lost a lot of weight recently and while he still skeeves me out a bit, I have no idea how a guy who looks like this today can have his byline pic on a well known website still be this .

That live podcast was horrible. I like Barnwell and Mays and always listen to their podcasts but they had a bunch of unfunny stuff/people up on stage making unfunny jokes. It was terrible.

I have a thing now where I can't listen to two meek-voiced dudes Skyping each other, even if the subject matter is interesting. Maybe it's a function of being old enough to have grown up listening to "real radio".

Gill Alexander's podcast "Beating The Book" has a guess the lines segment this week, haven't listened to it yet.

Same here

Anybody read the 'Yankees Suck!' article about the Boston T-shirt sales and the kids who profited from it? From Sept. 1st.

Wild. Hardcore punk, gangs selling t-shirts, straight edge, drugs after failed straight edge, so much money from t-shirt sales that they were touring Asia, what?

It's an ultimately depressing read, and sort of nihilistic and fatalistic, but it's interesting.

Might be the funnest thing I've read all year.

"The Bill Simmons podcast" is available for subscription with cousin Sal doing a Simmons impersonation on a 2 minute teaser. Guess the lines podcast on Mondays, NFL picks podcast on Fridays with House and a third weekly podcast with a random celebrity or his dad. Premiers 10/1. HBO show starts in the spring.

Well I know I'm subscribing.

I am too. I posted here earlier that his best bet with this was building a pirate ship and going the Carolla route. The advertisers will come in, plenty to sustain things.

He can now say whatever he wants with no one to answer to.

Can't wait.

My only concern is that he not try to turn into Dice Clay for shock value. The podcast is carrying an "explicit" rating. A couple swear words are fine. Don't turn the profanity to 11 thinking it makes you cool Simmons. That would just be annoying.

After his 150th unhinged tweet about deflategate I came to the conclusion that unfiltered Simmons sounded better in theory than practice.

He's a Patriots fan.

I know he's Hollywood Bill now, but a lot of the attraction is the candor and authenticity between him and his crew on the pod. If the Patriot fan thing bothers you, (he was just like all the other million fans losing their mind over it), he was likely never your thing.

Exactly. I'm stoked for his return.

:lmao: I've been reading his stuff for more than a decade. The homerism is just fine in small doses.

Listening to the first one now, I'm surprised he couldn't get something a little more solid in terms of a sponsor than the same Squarespace/Me Undies referral links that every other podcast has. I'm sure he'll do better with them comparatively as a result of his audience size but anyone who listens to his podcasts has been hearing Squarespace ads on other podcasts for two years already.

Listening to the first one as well, and it feels a little incomplete overall. Lack of any production value, cheaper audio equipment. The content is there like always and excited to listen, just seems off.

Almost like ESPN told Simmons that he could start broadcasting in October and HBO told Simmons they would supply him with support come springtime, so Bill is just doing this on his own right now.

Are you hoping for a return of stamps.com?

I had to come back here just to say that you, my friend, are going to really be happy around the 45 minute mark of the initial podcast.

This wasn't a small dose story though from any side though. It was a huge dose issue from everyone from ESPN to CNN with their side of thing. It was a very big deal and I don't fault him for making a big deal out of his opinion as well. That's all.
