Gray to visit HOU- Rosenfels Trade Possible? (1 Viewer)

Hopefully the Vikings have come to their senses and have a better QB plan than this. Only a desparate man would say it is a good deal to send a 3rd round pick for a backup. I'd take that 3rd and put it in the 'acquire McNabb' fund. I really doubt a team would need to give a #1 for McNabb... so just thinking out loud here when I say I'd rather give up a #2/#6 for McNabb than a #3 for Rosenfels.

Ill be pissed if they deal a 3rd rounder for his scrub ###...we could draft a 3rd round QB as good as this guy...he is a career backup at best...get the #### outta here that he is worth a 3rd round pick...
Seriously VD? Rosenfels looked more than capable last season. I would think a 3rd rounder is a no brainer for this guy.
He is a career backup who had a few good games...not worth a 3rd rounder IMO...we have an extra 3rd rounder this year, that doesnt mean we should give it away for someone who had a few nice games...
Same was said about Schaub and Hasselbeck.
Not even in the same ballpark...Schaub is STILL younger than Sage...and everyone from year two on said Schaub could be a starter...he was never considered a career backup...

I believe the Vikings are looking at Rosenfels as a potential starter not just a back up. I have a sickening feeling that Childress will end up giving up a draft pick to Eagles for AJ Feeley. God I hope I am wrong.

(Of course, I rather have them sign Ryan Fitzpatrick to an offer sheet and give up a 7th round pick to the Bengals.)

Texans official spin

Coach Gary Kubiak insists the signing of free-agent quarterback Quinn Gray does not increase the likelihood of Sage Rosenfels being traded.

Gray, who signed a one-year contract for $645,000 on Monday, becomes the third quarterback behind starter Matt Schaub and Rosenfels, the subject of trade speculation since the Texans turned down Minnesota's offer of a third-round draft choice this month.

"I know what people are saying, but signing Quinn has absolutely nothing to do with it," Kubiak said about acquiring Gray to expedite a trade for Rosenfels. "I've been a two-quarterback type of guy, but what happened to us last season scared the heck out of me, and I don't want to go through that again."

End of musical chairs

The Texans played musical chairs with their third quarterback last season. Now, for the $40,000 signing bonus, they get a long look at Gray in the offseason program, minicamp, training camp and preseason.

Gray provides them with the kind of experience they lacked in the third spot in 2007.

Last year, veteran Bradlee Van Pelt and rookie Jared Zabransky went to camp behind Schaub and Rosenfels. Both were waived. Schaub missed five starts because of injuries. Rosenfels appeared in 10 games and was 4-1 as a starter.

With Schaub out, the Texans signed Shane Boyd to the practice squad in October and Craig Nall to the active roster in November. After Nall was waived, Boyd was activated as the backup behind Rosenfels.

"I don't know what we would have done if something had happened to Sage," Kubiak said. "I don't want to go through that again. I think my philosophy has changed. I've become more of a three-quarterback guy.

Experience at third spot

"I'm excited to get Quinn. We watched tape of him, and we like what we saw. He's a big kid (6-3, 254) who's been in the league five years. Last season, he helped Jacksonville make the playoffs by winning at Tampa Bay and Tennessee."

As a starter, Gray lost to New Orleans and the Texans. He had four touchdown passes and no interceptions in the 42-28 defeat at Reliant Stadium.

"Of course, that played a role in our interest in Quinn, but we liked him before that," Kubiak said. "Now we have three experienced quarterbacks, and I feel real good about the situation."

Kubiak and general manager Rick Smith would like to get back the second-round pick they gave to Atlanta last year in the trade for Schaub.

Gray gives the Texans flexibility. He could be insurance in case the Texans are offered a second-round pick by Minnesota or any other team. When opposing quarterbacks are injured in preseason, they might be able to trade Gray for a draft choice or a player.

That article makes a ton of sense for me. Why would signing Quinn Gray to a $600K deal facilitate trading away a reasonably priced backup who played quite well as a starter when pressed into action?

Given their QB performance to date, I'd say Minnesota's situation qualifies as desperate. I think Rosenfels offers an immediate upgrade over TJ. I also tend to think if Sage stays put he'll beat out Schaub.

No chance Sage beats out Schaub, not after what they paid (and gave up) for him last year.Right, wrong or indifferent he will get a free past as the starter for at least another year.

Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwin were talking about this situation yesterday on Sirius radio.

For those who are unaware, Ryan is on one of the FOX broadcast teams. He knows things about even the most obscure NFL players, and Kirwin was a former GM in the league who keeps in contact with GMs and other key personnel men on a daily basis.

They both agree that they wouldn't even take a 2nd rounder for Rosenfels. The guy has proven he can rally the football team, and having a guy on the roster who you KNOW can play is more valuable than a 2nd-round pick who may or may not pan out.

They also opined that Kubiak realizes he needs three QBs, so they believe Sage isn't going anywhere.

Now for my personal view.

I am  at those of you trashing Sage in this thread. I seriously have to question whether you even saw him play last year.

I honestly thought before last year that Sage was a steaming pile of dog poo. He just never impressed me. I was then obviously caught off guard by how well he did play last year. It's tough to argue against him as he did play well last year. I'm not sure if the guy is that talented, he stepped into a system that fit him well, or he just happened to have a little hot streak when they needed him. I think it would make sense for the Vikings to try to bring in a guy like that in case Tarvaris just isn't good enough. I am not convinced Sage can be a solid NFL QB on a regular basis but I would take that chance for a 3rd round pick. Anything higher and I might consider just bringing in a free agent. I am a bit surprised the Vikings have not signed a free agent so maybe they do feel they can trade for a guy like Sage?
