Aretha is hit and miss for me - some amazing songs and many that I don't like at all.
I went with Madonna.

Even though she's a nut job, I voted for Madonna. Her career spanned several decades. Everyone in the world knew who she was in the 80's and 90's.

The same can be said for Ms. Swift now (she debuted in 2006, it is now 2025).

With all due respect to Madonna, who probably is comfortably in 2nd place here, she is now trailing Swift by quite a bit, largely because Swift has excelled at having hit singles AND smash albums, the latter of which is not close. Despite everyone knowing who Madonna was in the 90s, none of her albums went to number 1 here on the Billboard 200. Swift, meanwhile, has had 14 studio albums in a row DEBUT at number 1 (10 if you want to be pedantic and not count the Taylor's Version re-recordings), and of course has the record for most Album of the Year wins at the Grammy's (which might be mostly crap, but that is still a notable accompishment). With singles, both have had 12 number 1 hits, but Swift actually has more weeks spent at number 1. Again, Madonna reigned supreme for a long time, but she is now number 2. No shame in that,

I was the only one who went with Diana Ross. I think the fact she started in the 60s maybe works against her due to some recency bias.
I agree with the recency bias hence only 2 votes for the greatest pop singer of all time, but wouldn't Aretha and Diana be considered soul singers.
Diana Ross had a lot of pop hits with the Supremes and otherwise.
True it just when I think of her I think motown. She absolutely had a great voice regardless of genre. I would rank her head and shoulders over Swift not even close.

I think comparing Swift to artist Like Ross,Franklin and Turner is about the same as comparing Lainey Wilson to Patsy Cline. There is no comparison.

Would have been interesting to see Madonna during the height of social media. Aretha is the best voice, IMO. Tina the best show(wo)man and all-around is Madonna or Taylor. I just am a little too old to fully appreciate the whole Taylor phenomenon.

I think if you forced yourself to listen to Swift for a month you would realize just how talented she is, even if her music isn't your style.

You know I might just do that. I pride myself on my musical diversity. I just might be suffering on recency bias myself just in reverse.

Taylor Swift and honestly I don't think it's close.
What has Taylor done that exceeds Madonna?
Grammys
Multi billion dollar tour
Swift has definitely gotten more love from the big award shows. Madonna never was their favorite. Beyonce has made way more on tour but that's just the nature of modern tours. All 10 of the highest grossing tours in history were from the last 10 years. Ed Sheran has 2 tours that made more than any of Madonna's tours. But I think Madonna was set a standard for a female pop star and these massive stage production tours that were as much as traveling show than just a concert. So maybe Swift is doing it bigger but Madonna did it first. I am not saying Swift isn't the answer but it is close IMO.

There may be a category of two where Madonna is "greater" than TS. But taken as a whole I just don't see it being an argument.

Taylor Swift's Eras Tour alone has grossed $2,077,618,725. This single tour has surpassed Madonna's entire career touring gross.
That means Ed Sheeran is the greatest male pop star of all time. He has 2 of the 6 highest grossing concert tours of all time. I am not doing the math but I bet those 2 tours alone surpass the total of every tour Michael Jackson ever did by 5x-10x.

That was just one criteria. You know that's not the only one I'm considering.

Of course I do, just having some fun as grown men arguing about Taylor Swift vs Madonna lol

Yea that just doesn't sound right does it?

If someone is arguing about it seriously they probably should step back. But I don't see anything wrong with arguing about anything all for a little fun.

I’da thrown Lady Gaga on the list. Beyoncé has no votes but belongs, maybe Rhianna and Ariana Grande belong too. Also props to Whitney, who has a couple votes. I voted for Taylor fwiw.

I would rather see Tina Turner in her prime than anyone else on the list.

Here is a blistering live performance clip from the "Hollywood A-Go Go" TV show in 1965 (Sorry about the For Research Only lettering in middle of the screen).

I voted Madonna, and do agree that Swift's tour revenue doesn't mean everything.

But I don't recall Madonna or any other pop star reaching the same level of widespread obsession that Swift has reached. Feels like some Beatles/Elvis type stuff.

Tickets were like 15 bucks in Madonna’s day
Okay...

Madonna's total ticket sales, adjusted for inflation to 2025, amount to approximately $1.751 billion.

Or, approximately $300m less than Taylor's last tour.

And that's just one metric.

Signs o' the different times...

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift's total sales can be calculated as follows:

  • Album sales: 114,000,000 units
  • Streaming equivalent sales: 69,137,200 units
Total sales for Taylor Swift: 183,137,200 units

Madonna

Madonna's total sales can be broken down as:

  • Album sales: 300,000,000 units
  • Streaming equivalent sales: 9,104,887 units
Total sales for Madonna: 309,104,887 units.

And yet...
  • Taylor Swift: 14 number-one albums
  • Madonna: 9 number-one albums

I said before "It's not really close." It's closer than I originally thought. But it's still Swift.

And the maybe craziest thing is she's not close to done.

Instinctively, I'm going with Diana Ross. If you asked me which of those stars I'd like to see the most, it'd be Diana (and it's not close). Deborah Harry, as pointed out by Cowboysfan8, is probably number one for me, but I don't know exactly what "greatest" entails, so I'll stick with Diana.

eta* Diana has sold about 150,000,000 albums solo and with The Supremes, according to Chartmasters.

True.

Madonna's longevity has been impressive, but when you think about it, 2001 was her 20th year as a recording artist (2025 is Swift's as well for comparison's sake), and 2000 (her 19th year) was the last year Madonna had a number 1 hit here in America with the song, Music; Swift also had a number 1 in her 19th year with the song, Fortnight. Madonna's "dominance" or aura of being a strong competitor on the BIllboard Hot 100 was pretty much over after 2002, and I seriously doubt Swift is going to stop being a force, on the album or singles charts, any time soon. There is obviously more to this all than the charts, but Swift is already running laps around nearly everyone and is just going to keep doing so if she so chooses.
