Greg Olsen (1 Viewer)

I just picked up Greg Olsen in my keeper league and I'm wondering what the board consensus is regarding both his long-term future and projections for the rest of this year. Lovie Smith is saying he will get Olsen more involved in the offense in the coming weeks and I'm projecting 45 receptions and 4 TDs from here on out. Does anyone else think this is realistic in light of Brian Griese's emergence and Desmond Clark's current role as starting TE? Hopefully things will work out so that I can keep Olsen rostered for the remainder of the season, because I think he has the skills to be the man in Chicago and a top 5 TE next year, but maybe I'm just dreaming. Your input is appreciated.

Starting him this week becasue of Heap's injury. I am not confident that Lovie has a clue as far as Olsen getting the ball. How many times ahve we heard 'oh, we need to get him more reps, more time, more passes'....blah blah blah and the story remains the same. I am predicting a goose egg from Olsen for now. He's got potentila but that's it for now.

Anyone know Griese's past use of TE's? Sure didn't look their way last week much for all the passes thrown.

Last week D. Clark caught 7 for 44 yards and a TD. I'd also be interested in learning more about Griese's past use of TEs.

I believe he threw a ton of balls to Shannon Sharpe once upon a time.

I missed the game but it looks like G. Olsen might meet my expectations for the season. How did he look?

The dude is firey, which is nice to see. He is aldo extremely athletic, which is more important. Made a few nice catches and benefited from the refs call on the td. But he is legit. Worth a start from here on out IMO.

I'm a Bears fan but don't own Olsen in any leagues.

My take; he looked pretty good and it seemed Griese was going his way quite a bit (Berrian was out a lot of the game with inj though). Honestly, I think he looks like he could be a legit receiving threat at TE. He is worth watching very closely now that he is healthy and with Griese at QB.

As long as he keeps getting away with pushing off, he is good. Long term, nice, but Desmond Clark is still the #1 TE option. G-Reg will be a frustrating fantasy play more often than he hits a home run this year.

He looked very good IMO. He was limited in plays, but he was lined up outside alot - which in my opinion increases his value since it looks like they are using him as a receiver mostly. The guy is 6'5" and has some speed. He is from Miami which seems to be a plus when it comes to performing in the NFL (see Winslow Jr, Shockey).

Clark is still there, so that is a negative - but he performed well nonetheless.

I'd like to see 1 more game, but I think he could be a quality TE from here on out.

(Obviously in dynasty this guy should be rostered.)

Olsen looks like a guy chomping at the bit to get involved and make some plays.

On one swing pass, he was barley tackled (shoestring style) and he looked real pissed. He saw the open field and really wanted more.

I know it's kinda intangible, but seems to really have the desire to succeed as well and the measurable skills.

It might not help him much with the state of the Bears offense this year, but it is something I will keep in mind for next year and in the future.

I'm not sure. I think they may have more passes to the TE. Their running game isn't working, that's for sure. And I am not sure about Berrian. Is he out for a while?

I think he may have earned more looks yesterday, but I see him with limited upside with Griese behind center and Benson keeping defenses honest.

If the Bears get healthy and Griese limits the turnovers, they are very scary IMO.

They have enough weapons on all sides of the ball to compete with any team in the NFL. Grossman kept the SB from being a great game.

he looked great IMO. im sure he will get more attention in the passing game from here on out, as the bears are desperately looking for playmakers on offense. i can actually see alot of 2 TE sets in the future. its sad that he seems better than most wrs on this roster already. that how bad they suck on O

Honestly, this is a little crazy but I can see it as a Bears fan: I wonder if we essentially saved Olsen for this week against GB. At least some of his plays. It seems that even with Berrian in, they would have thrown Olsen in there for their game against DET otherwise.

And yes, the Bears are THAT obsessed with beating GB.

Week 8:

Greg Olsen: 6 receptions for 59 yards and a TD

Desmond Clark: 1 Reception for 11 yards

I was unable to watch the game but it seems like the targets are going toward Olsen more and more each week. From the highlights I've seen, he's getting open consistently, cutting and juking like a WR and appears to be a future stud TE, maybe top 10 this year when all is said and done.

He's more Bubba Franks than he is Shockey/Winslow Jr.
Bubba Franks in 2002? Are you predicting that Olsen's career will be derailed by injury? How is he similar to Bubba Franks, and unlike Shockey/KW2?
Not as athletic as Shockey/Winslow. Here's my take pre-draft from Draftguys.comSure, Olsen has the body and measurables to look the part of a NFL TE - but can he get it done on the field? A lack of production is my biggest red flag with Olsen, surely not in the same league as other great Hurricane TE's - Franks, Shockey, Winslow Jr., creates good separation and has solid hands, very tough and hard nosed player that uses his aggression as a motivator, good route runner, needs improvement at blitz recognition.Has had a good couple of weeks and looks to be a favorite of Griese.

Lead Scout Big Sean Baca's predraft take from draftguys.com

This, I am sure, will be the number one guy in at least 95% of the rankings you'll find, so not much of a surprise here. He runs routes in the way that you would expect a wide receiver to run them, break clean and fast and in one step then accelerate out. He should improve as a blocker where he tends to hand fight rather than use proper technique, but he won't be drafted on his blocking ability. A guy that would not fit the mold in the '70's or early '80's will fit in perfectly in a league were tight ends are used so often as a third receiver. He's a "love him or hate him" type of player but the only ones he needs love from is his Mom and the Quarterback.

The question of who the #1 TE off the board was a good one until the combine. Olsen pulled away from Zach Miller, looking like a thoroughbred running an astounding 4.51 40. Olsen is by far the best athlete of this TE class, and he's demonstrated the routes, hands, and awareness to be a great weapon in the pros. He will demand attention from safeties, and he'll instantly be one of the best TE's in the league running after the catch. There is a catch, and it's that Olsen is at best an average blocker. Teams that truly value a two-way TE may pass on Olsen. Olsen was never dominant at Miami (but then again, who has been lately on that offense?), which raises some questions about him not playing up to the considerable athletic ability and talent he flashed at the combine.

Thoughts on him going forward? Top 10 for sure? Maybe top 5? There is no running game and when the best receiving options are "one-pattern Berrian" and "over-the-hill Muhammad" I think he has some real value.

He's been fairly consistent, even with splitting the TE pie with D. Clark. The Bears really use the TE position to a significant degree. Olsen will distance himself from Clark going forward. Now I can dump Clark, who I've carried while V.Davis and Scheff got through their injuries and inconsistencies.

I drafted him. If you look at how many of the top TEs are used, they split out frequently like a WR. This is exactly how Olsen is going to be used. I have him as a top 5, and hopefully more consistent than the overwhelming majority of TEs these days.

I'm not seeing the "more Franks than Shockey comparison" and I'm not sure all of the pre-draft quotes support that opinion more than they refute it. I'm a big fan of Shockey, but in my opinion, Olsen has a chance to be as good as him if he gets a QB back there who can throw the football to the right team. His first TD catch against Green Bay was a great catch in which he used his height to outjump a shorter DB in the endzone, then held onto the ball as he got pushed out of bounds, and he made a outstanding over the shoulder catch in that game as well. Yesterday's TD catch was a nice route in which he lined up in the slot and took advantage of a short out route by Devin Hester on the outside in which the Detroit DB took a step up to cover underneath and he beat the safety.

We here in Chicago love him because of his attitude; he took the whole "offensive rap" thing in stride and has a knack for saying all the right things, including a lot of humility and a great deal of respect (he won over quite a few people after a preseason sideline interview in which he and Da Coach traded compliments and he kept referring to Iron Mike as "sir", contrast that with Cedric the Bustertainer). If he can stay healthy and take care of his body (quite unlike Shockey), he can be something special.

Agree completely with you. Also, I dont think pre-season stuff has much to do with what we are actually seeing this season right now.

I know I know it is way too small of a sample size but... extrapolating Olsen's last 4 games to a 16 game season:

76 - 908 - 8

And this with splitting TE reps with Clark?

Very intrigued in his dynasty future.

59 yards and a td-great for a te-but i tied this week any way to get that to 60 yards? who got replacing him off waviers this week9

He certainly looks to be getting a nice number of targets every week. As long as Greise is the QB, Olsen should be a nice TE play.

Olsen's doughnut killed me this week. People are saying that the switch to Grossman hurt Olsen, since he had been Griese's main target, but I hardly ever saw Olsen on the field, and when he was there he was blocking mostly. Seems he wasn't really part of the offensive gameplan and I have to assume that this was the coach's decision, not Grossman's. I hope next week is different because I really like the kid, but he'll be on my bench until I see him regain his role as a featured receiver.

I'm concerned as well, but am going to wait one more week to see if Olsen comes back to the forefront. If not, I'm going to have to waiver one of my RB handcuffs (D. Ward or K.Keith) in order to pick up a second-tier TE like Scaife.
