Report: Growing tension between Brett Favre and Brad Childress

Posted by Michael David Smith on October 6, 2010 5:35 PM ET

Vikings quarterback Brett Favre has to be happy today that he's finally got Randy Moss as a teammate.

But that doesn't mean he's happy about everything in Minnesota.

Michael Silver of Yahoo reports, citing sources inside the Vikings' locker room, that there's growing tension between Favre and Vikings head coach Brad Childress.

That's the latest in a long line of reports that Favre doesn't think particularly highly of Childress, and Childress knows there's a perception that Favre views himself -- not Childress -- as the one who calls the shots on offense. At his press conference today, Childress was asked whether Favre might just disregard Childress's instructions and tell Moss to go long from time to time, and Childress responded, "We're already talking about a mutiny?"

We're not talking about a mutiny yet. But there are still 13 more games for Childress to become the latest coach to decide that Moss's talent doesn't justify the headaches he causes.

On the other hand, there are still 13 games for Favre-to-Moss to become the best passing combination in the league. As Silver quoted one unnamed Viking saying, "I think it's all or nothing. It's either the missing piece and we go all the way, or Moss takes on Chilly and this thing blows up by the end of October. There's no C grade on this one. It'll either be an A or an F."

I heard the "inside" sources are the cleaning help, who are upset they don't get enough tips for picking up the towels.

I agree about the "no C grade" sentiment 100 percent! The Vikings are all-in. Either it works, or it'll be the Hindenburg in prime time.

You know what though? As a Vikings fan since the 1970s? I can't remember a more entertaining time to be a fan. The team goes out and makes a move for Favre. He and ADP are maybe ONE miscue in the NFC Championship Game away from a Super Bowl. And then this off-season, Favre comes back. The team SUCKS the first three games, then they pull the trigger on getting the offense the WR1 that it is lacking with Rice on PUP.

Even if it does blow up in their faces, it sure has made for a lot of interesting reading, watching, and hours and hours of water-cooler conversation! Childress is :bye: as a coach and :goodposting: as a play-caller. I have to hand it to Zigi Wilf though for going out and putting a highly entertaining product for fans (and NFL fans across the country/planet) to chew on. Sure beats the Les Steckel, Jerry Burns and Mike Tice years. Though in Tice's defense, he WAS entertaining too...but more in the sense of "let's see what the big dufus does/says this week." Like Denny Green, except swap "dufus" for "egomaniac."

Diva qb disagrees with coach......shocking. My 10 year olds sometimes disagree let alone a 40 year old kid. I bet Simms and Parcells wanted to kill eachother regularly, etc. Nothing to see here.

agreedAs I stated in the Moss thread, this is great entertainment for Packer fans - very interesting development that creates even more anticipation for the 10/24 Sunday night game in Green Bay. It could be a disaster for us if the Favre/Moss combo unleashes hell in Lambeau, or could be a hilarious trainwreck to enjoy this season and beyond. I am often wrong about the future effects of current deals, and I think the "mortgaging their future" cliche is often overstated in regard to the NFL, but I do agree it appears the Vikings are going all-in for this season.

We know that Favre frequently audibled out of running plays to go deep last season, sometimes in ill-advised situations, and he will almost certainly continue to do that this season, particularly now with Moss on the team. The funny thing is, as a Packer fan and former Favre fan, I have to say that I'd be much less concerned if he were to stick to Chilly's gameplan than I am with the old man calling his shots at will.

At my work the tension between the packer fans is getting out of control. Their so mad the T.T. would not trade for Lynch to give the packers a chance to win, and now the Vikings trade for all All Pro Wide Receive to give new life for Favre.

T.T. will end up destroying the pack

Old saying:

When God wishes to punish people He gives them what they want.

Childress and Zygi Wilf might be in for a very rough ride.

{Geaux Saints}

Childress is the coach? I always thought he was Brett's caddy or towel boy or gopher.

This is complete news to me. :goodposting:

Yea he's sure wrecked this team hasn't he. We'll be contending for years to come, not for just one season.

hasnt been much talk about the impending doomsday scenario.

suppose the jets pound on the vikings this monday. imagine what espn will be like for a week after the game.

then imagine that the vikings go 2 for 5 in the next 5 games. imagine what espn, brett favre and randy moss will be like.

i think at this point we should all just hope the vikings win the superbowl. will avoid a lot of hassle and drama that way.

I think you're completely, 180 degrees off here. What fun is a drive on the highway without an accident to look at from time to time?

:goodposting: The ride last year and this year has been so much fun. I was more disappointed after the Saints game because the season was over more so than the fact the Vikings weren't going to the superbowl and it has only gotten better this year. The Wilfs have got to be the best owners in MN sports history IMO.

Locker-room sources say the frost between Childress and Favre is palpable right now, a bad situation obviously exacerbated by the Vikings’ disappointing 1-2 start.
The growing tension between Favre and Childress, and the sense that the quarterback doesn’t have much respect for the coach as an offensive strategist, has been well-documented since last season – most thoroughly by Y! Sports’ Jason Cole in August. The aforementioned team sources say things have remained strained in recent weeks, with Childress questioning Favre for having altered some plays at the line of scrimmage and questioning his commitment to the team. Before the Vikings scored their first victory of the season two Sundays ago against the Lions, the previously quoted source says, the two men went nearly a week without speaking.

A few years ago the Packer fans were all bound up about TT not trading a 4th rounder for Moss. It pissed Favre off to and began his move out of town. Now Favre finally gets with Moss and its in Minnesota....... If TT would have bucked up the pick for Moss a few years ago you cheesers would have creamed your undies.

Contending for a WC berth every season is possible under TT. But if you are dreaming about SB contention...put the kool-aid down. If he has shown one thing it is that he does not have what it takes to put a team over the top.

If some of you would read a bit and recognize what really happened in that Moss deal, perhaps your words and criticisms would hold more wait.If you think it was a 4th round pick that was any stumbling block...you are wrong.

He had one team in the NFC Title game.He had another with the best offense the franchise has ever seen as far as points go down to the wire on the road in the playoffs.Now...I agree he has disappointed the last year or so in not going for the throat and adding a few pieces...to claim he just does not have what it takes to put a team over the top based on 5 years as a GM is pretty funny.

I agree about last year. It was a great story. This year has a different feel though. Desperation and drama. If it works, it's all worth it. If it doesn't, it will still be very entertaining.

 There will always be tension on a losing team. Moss will help ease that tension by putting them in a much better position to win games.

Does anybody blame Farve for disagreeing with Chili?
Not at all. He obviously knows the offense better and is a better in game manager/coach. The only problem with it is if they don't win. It could get messy if that happens.
Well they're undefeated except for 2 games.

:lmao: Nicely played - the ever-popular SP logic of "if you throw out those two bad games, they would be..." :lmao:

Chilly is just upset because Favre didn't text him wiener pics, and Favre is getting annoyed with Chilly because he won't stop asking for them.
