KFFL) Eric Edholm, of ProFootballWeekly.com, reports the NFL announced Friday, April 11, that play-by-play announcer Bryant Gumbel will leave the NFL Network. Gumbel served as the network's Thursday and Saturday Night Football play-by-play announcer for the past two seasons. He said that he enjoyed his opportunity with the network but feels he is better off going in a different direction. "I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to call NFL Network games the past two years, which was a new experience for me," said Gumbel. "But we've agreed that we'd all be better served going in different directions."

Yayyyyyyyyy

Bryant's best call by far.

I'll miss him as he knew less about football than my grandmother. Gumbel made Grandma feel very smart.

I'm sure this has nothing to do with Bornstein getting roasted at the Owners Meeting two weeks ago.

Hmmm. That's funny, I read it as "I was fired but they're letting me save face".

Actually, the quote was "But we've agreed that it would appear we'd all be better served going in different directions".This really is great news for NFL fans. Any ideas on who is going to replace Gumbel?

Collinsworth is staying.

Who will be paired with him is the question.

I'll throw out the first guess (not endorsement) based on nothing other than a conversation starter....Mike Patrick?

Gumbel himself is proposing some alternatives:

"Steve Yang, who played for the Niners; Or **** Verboten, who was the coach of the Chiefs; Or Sterling Shopper, who played for the Broncos; or Hale Irwin who was a receiver for the Cowboys..."

now at least there won't be the weekly thread trashing him.....not sure why more of you guys didn't use the mute button?

:thumbdown:There's few things that bring everyone on this site together, but pretty sure this is one of them.
Might be the only time I say :goodposting: to you but it's oh so true.I think the fact that I actually tuned in the feed of the European dudes over the internet rather than go to a sports bar to hear Gumbel pretty much says it all about the guy.Oh but I have to say please no Dierdorf!Think the Lions might be willing to give up Matt Millen? -QG

Gumbel seemed like he was announcing the game like he was multi-tasking and talking on the phone to you. Weird but never very good. Also very glad he's gone.

**** Vermeil is the best annoucer that NFL Network has ever used!
 There was a double header game a coupla' years back where Jaws & Vermil were used as an announcing crew.Hands down the best called TV game I've heard / seen. Excellent pairing. Pretty sure a Vermil & Collinsworth pairing would also work well.

Strongly agree with the bolded part - I think that was the MNF double-header last year. Jaws and Vermiel were fantastic
