Meh. The Greek God of Walks was coveted before he ever played an MLB game.Kevin Youkilis
Finless.
Well he's only 20 so he was even younger a few years ago. He was a high HS draft pick by the Braves and has always been an impressive physical specimen. When we did the original SB dynasty draft in 2008, Heyward was regarded highly enough by minor league touts for me to burn a mid round pick on him. Heyward, Alvarez and Andrew Brackman were the three futures I targeted in that draft. Brackman has been as bad as Heyward's been good.Finless.Been here since day 1
Can someone tell me what Heyward's deal was and how I missed drafting him over the last couple years? Did he just make a torrid run right out of high school?
He was never on my radar.....which makes no sense.
I'd like to take Alvarez off your hands.Well he's only 20 so he was even younger a few years ago. He was a high HS draft pick by the Braves and has always been an impressive physical specimen. Never heard this good stuff!Trevor Hoffman. Reds 11th round pick as an infielder, but after trying him at pitcher in the minors they didn't care about protecting him from expansion draft. Pitched for Marlins in their 1st season and never saw the minors again until a 2003 rehab assignment.Guy has been unbelievable for almost 20 years.
And traded to the Cubs along with Larry Bowa for a Ivan Dejesus who hit .194 the previous year.Ryne Sandberg was a 20th round pick.
Piazza doesn't fit my idea of "no expectations upon callup". He first appeared in the majors as a September call-up in 1992, after socking an OPS of around 1000 in AA & AAA that year. In my 93 NL-only auction, i had him pegged as a "gotta get", which i did and he was a key part in winning the title that season. Pablo Sandoval is a recent comp. The guys who fit this definition for me are ones like Casey McGehee.Mike Piazza
Sandoval is a great example. The Panda wasn't regarded as a top prospect coming up through the Giants system. In 2008, something clicked and he did great at AA, AAA and MLB levels.Piazza doesn't fit my idea of "no expectations upon callup". That was before the amateur draft startedPete RoseSigned by the Reds as an amateur free agent.
I didn't even think about that. That was before the amateur draft startedPete RoseSigned by the Reds as an amateur free agent.
He was a late bloomer. I believe he signed an independent minor league deal before signing with the Reds organization.I didn't even think about that. That was before the amateur draft startedPete RoseSigned by the Reds as an amateur free agent.Blunder aside, is it safe to say Rose wasn't a top prospect?
As a favor actually. True story: I played for a team that cut Mike Piazza

Sandoval, really? I thought I remembered some minors hype and talk of dual positions prior to him coming up.I'm a Sox fan I and I did not see Ellsbury becoming this successful. The year before coming up he was buried in the Sox prospects ranking IIRC.Don MattinglyPablo SandovalRicky Ricardo
Watched Mattingly play for the Columbus Clippers (AAA). He rarely went deep, but man could he stroke the ball. Great defensive first baseman as well. He was a lock for Hall until the back problems started. What a great player.Don MattinglyPablo SandovalRicky Ricardo
