Harbaugh is a 49er! (1 Viewer)

Allegedly when Harbaugh came to Stanford the first thing he did was look at tape of the top QB prospects in the country. He offered scholarships to a few guys, one of them being Andrew Luck.

San Francisco's biggest problem has been its complacency with its QB situation. I have said many times and will say it again: You don't win anything in the NFL without a franchise QB. I think Harbaugh understands the importance of the QB position and I think he'll take active steps to solve the problem.

I was wondering about something the following yesterday . . . in recent years, which college coaches have had success in the NFL? I hang up and listen.
I was thinking about that, too - but which of the recent college to NFL coaches have significant NFL playing experience? And then I started wondering what former NFL players have had recent success as NFL coaches? Dungy and Fisher, I guess, and Jason Garrett did well this year. But Singletary was terrible and Kubiak and Del Rio's teams are chronic underachievers. So does that make Harbaugh double sketchy, or does the college coach background cancel out the former NFL player background?
How many NFL assistants go on to become good coaches....hold on a minute...compared to the number that don't? Herm Edwards? Marvin Lewis? Brad Childress? Mike Martz? It's a crap shoot no matter what. A minority of coaches from any particular background are going to become good NFL coaches almost by definition. And the sample size for each discreet group is so small, I question any conclusion made.

Mariucci is actually a very good analogy. He was QB coach of the Packers before becoming head coach at Cal. Likewise Harbaugh was QB coach of the Raiders before going on to become head coach at San Diego and Stanford. Mariucci's stint in SF wasn't bad at all, though I think his failures in Detroit had more to do with Matt Millen than his abilities to coach.

At least the 49ers are trying, I hate to see these deadbeat owners that won't spend money. As a 49er fan I am excited, but I was excited about Singletary as well. College coaches don't seem to have a long history of success jumping to the NFL. Jimmy Johnson comes to mind. Any others?
Steve Mariucci.

When is the last time a college coach jumped to the NFL, and the QB he left behind is LIGHT YEARS better than anyone on the NFL roster?

This is going to be a long year for Jimbo.

Will not shock me if San Fran actually tried to lose a lot of football games. The problem is Cinci has a big head start.

I was surprised they signed Braylon but they were not very active in free agency. Not always a bathing but San Fran seems primed to lose 10-12 games, maybe more if they try hard.

No chance. Goes against everything the Harbaugh family is about.
OK sure but if the Niners keep bringing knives to a gunfight on Sundays they are going to lose, and it won't matter how competitive the Harbaughs are.
The 49ers didn't even try to tank the last game of the season last year that would have given them better draft position. No way would they tank a whole one when they promise better football for expensive PSL's for the imaginary new Stadium.

I think it's time to ask ourselves if Jim Harbaugh is the best football coach ever.

Or maybe Mike Singletary is THAT bad...
