Hasselbeck - any injury updates? return estimates? (1 Viewer)

Mon, Oct 5

Coach Jim Mora said that Hasselebeck (rib) will attempt to practice Wednesday, but offered "no promises" that Hasselbeck will play Sunday, the Seattle Times' Danny O'Neil reports.

Recommendation: We'll have to wait until Wednesday to see whether Hasselbeck's fractured rib cooperates and allows him to get some work in. Seattle is 0-2 without him.

(Rotowire.com)

I'm thinking we won't have a solid fix on this until Friday at the earliest. If he practices Friday I'd feel good about his chances of starting.

Rotoworld reporting he is still in considerable pain and unlikely to play.

As others have said, Friday will be the key practice report.

Not encouraging news...

Mora press conference: Hasselbeck, Jones updates

Posted By Ryan Divish on October 7, 2009 at 11:10 am

Obviously, what everyone wants to know is the status of quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, and head coach Jim More didn't waste time getting to it.

"Let's talk first about what you all want to know about and that's Matt," Mora said. "I've always had a lot of respect for him and it keeps growing and here's why."

And basically, Mora then told the story of meeting with the press on Monday and then going to the locker room about two hours later and seeing Hasselbeck in "excruciating pain." Not exactly what he wanted to see after telling the media just hours before that Hass would practice on Wednesday. Mora said that Hasselbeck was also upset about his condition. Mora just tried to comfort his quarterback and tell him that things could be better on Tuesday.

And ...

"He had come in and gotten his treatment and taken a couple of aspirin - high potency aspirin - and gone out on the field and worked out and fought his way through it," Mora said. "And he's going to go on the field today."

Hasselbeck will participate in stretch, individual work, installation and then the Seahawks will reevaluate where he's at and see how much more they will have him do.

"If he can keep pushing, he'll keep pushing," Mora said. "The guy is without question doing everything possible to get out on the football field. That's what you'd expect of him. But to see him every day and the kind of the ups and downs of pushing the injury and his willingness to do what it takes at any level to get out on the field has really garnered a lot of respect around here from me, the coaches and his players."

So does that mean he'll be ready to go on Sunday? Not exactly.

"Let's all keep our fingers crossed and see how it goes today with him," Mora.

But hold on, what about this whole "excruciating pain" thing on Monday what caused that?

"It was just part of the healing process," Mora said.

Well, okay then. IT's not usually any part of the healing processes that I know of, but I guess we'll believe him.

Really it's not a question of how tough Hasselbeck is, but whether he can be effective and whether playing on Sunday could make the situation worse and have miss more time.

"Being tough is not enough," Mora said. " Being smart, being able to function. We just have to see where he is a tthe end of the week. Time will tell. By the time we get to Saturday we should have a pretty good idea."

Obviously, Hasselbeck wants to get out on the field. And he'll push to play. He's been doing that, but hopefully not to detriment.

"Matt's smart though. We're going to make the right decision," Mora said.

Well - I just made my decsiion....cut Matt added J Cambell to cover River's bye.

local radio here is saying he's playing.
There's no way they've decided this for sure yet. He hasn't even practiced.
Agreed. Here is the link to check on Wednesday evening for update on how practice went.
From Hooper31's link:"Hasselbeck, who experienced some pain on Monday, said he felt OK after today’s practice, but is still uncertain if he will play on Sunday."

"Hasselbeck said he feels comfortable doing bootlegs and moving out of the pocket. He says it does not hurt to throw, and for the most part he looked comfortable dropping back and making all of the throws during practice."

Reading between the lines, I do not think Hass will be ready.
I was just thinking the opposite, I can't make up my mind what to do on this guy.I have Rodgers on a bye and need a QB this week. I'd go big on the WW (blind bidding) if I knew he'd play, but I just can't get a good feeling either way.My other options are few and far between!

I was just thinking the opposite, I can't make up my mind what to do on this guy.
My guess is we will have a much clearer picture after practice on Friday.
I think you are right. I think I'm going to carry three QB's this week and make my decision on Sunday based on what I hear this weekend. My WW is Thursday night, so I have to make my mind up by then. Friday is good to make a decision for starters, just not for my WW moves. It's the bed I made, I guess it's time to sleep in it.

Post Wednesday practice update

Sounds more encouraging that the previous update. Also, there's a video interview if you follow the link above.

Wednesday practice report: Hasselbeck makes it through practice

Posted By Eric Williams on October 7, 2009 at 2:21 pm

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck practiced for the first time in over two weeks on Wednesday, and made it through the entire practice without any issues.

Hasselbeck, who experienced some pain on Monday, said he felt OK after today’s practice, but is still uncertain if he will play on Sunday.

“That was probably in the 17 days that we’ve had here the worst day,” Hasselbeck said about Monday, in which head coach Jim Mora described his quarterback as being in excruciating pain. “It’s just one of those things where I want to be fair to the team. I want to be out there and give everything that I’ve got.

“But at the same time I want to be fair to Seneca. If for some reason I’m not able to go he needs to be prepared to play. Today was a good start, and we’ll see how tomorrow goes.”

Hasselbeck said he feels comfortable doing bootlegs and moving out of the pocket. He says it does not hurt to throw, and for the most part he looked comfortable dropping back and making all of the throws during practice.

Hasselbeck went through individual and team drills. He split reps with Seneca Wallace with the first team. He also said he’d be willing to test out the injury in terms of seeing how he would respond to contact to make sure he’s OK to go on Sunday.

Offensive coordinator Greg Knapp said in putting together a game plan this week for Jacksonville he’ll try to select plays that are familiar to both Hasselbeck and Wallace.

“His energy was excellent I felt for a guy who hasn’t practiced in a couple weeks, so that was a good sign,” Knapp said.

Hasselbeck was listed as a limited participant in practice today, along with Justin Griffith (knee) and Lofa Tatupu (hamstring)

LB Leroy Hill (groin), OT Walter Jones (knee), OT Sean Locklear (ankle) and OG Rob Sims were listed as out, although we did see Hill running and working agility drills on a nearby hill while practice was taking place. Walter Jones also came out at the end of practice.

DE Patrick Kerney (groin) did not participate in practice

Cornerback Josh Wilson was a full participant in practice today and looked like he’s close to being ready to go. Asked if he was planning to return kicks on Sunday, Wilson had this to say:

“I expect to catch some passes, return some kicks and play some quarterback if they let me,” Joked Wilson. “I’ll do whatever I can to make sure I can help this team win.”

For Jacksonville, DT Greg Peterson (knee) is out. S Sean Considine (groin), LB Adam Seward (groin), CB Scott Starks (hip) and OT Tra Thomas (knee) did not practice.

LB Clint Ingram (ankle) was limited in practice. And DT Derek Landri (wrist) was a full participant in practice.

LISTEN HERE D0UCHEBAG--I used the search function and there were no hits. Its not my fault people can't spell HASSELBACK.
The quote is from the other thread, but I thought it was funny that you seem to be blaming your lack of search hits on the whole Hasselbeck family for not spelling their last name the way you want it to be spelled....you do know his name IS spelled Hasselbeck, right?Anyway, I would definitely stay away from starting Hasselbeck this week even if he is active. He is feeling better, but he had a setback in his rehab as recently as Monday, and it wasn't until today that was able to have any participation in practive and it was all non-contact. I can't imagine that it would get soo much better in a few days, and game conditions (and even contact drills in practice) is a lot different than non-contact drills. Also, the seahawks have at least three starters from the O-line out (including both left and right tackles), so his protection is not the best which means he is going to get hurried and hit pretty frequently....while recovering from broken ribs, that's not a good thing. I'm guessing if he plays, he will at best be splitting snaps with Wallace this week.

We've already ruined the other thread, please let's leave the fighting in there and leave this one for news. I didn't handle it in the best manner and for that I apologize.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves and seeing a poster who has been here for so long start a new thread when a very quick glance would have shown the same info he was looking for just a few spots below irritates me.

That's why I continued posting in this thread instead of the other thread. My post was mostly meant to be informative (at least my opinion from following the Seahawks), but I just thought that quote was funny.

I dont understand why peeps every get mad at each other on the forums..

Never has made any sense to me.

Is Hasselbeck going to play or what? I got Rodgers on a Bye too.

Not gonna take a chance starting Hass. I'd be too worried he doesn't finish the game, so I'll be rolling w/ Garrard. Just get well Hass...

Garrard is a no-brainer over Hasselbeck ... even if Hasselbeck is 1000 percent healthy. For the rest of you thinking about using him this week: He's a risky play. Even if they come out Friday and say he's going to start, you could wind up with the same situation as a couple of weeks ago when he got hurt early in the game. The preliminary rankings threw me for a loop. I started thinking about using him this week as my QB2/flex. But I am going to go with a sure thing 5-8 points rather than a possible 10/0. Just not worth the risk. It's why I avoided MH in the preseason.

Hasselbeck practice: 'Better than I expected'

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck returned to practice on Wednesday and threw the ball well, though he noted afterward that he was glad this wasn't game day yet.

"It felt OK," Hasselbeck said of his first practice since breaking a rib 17 days earlier against the San Francisco 49ers. "Probably better than I expected. I don't know how it looked, but it was manageable today."

But Hasselbeck said he didn't know if he would be able to play Sunday against Jacksonville, saying that would be up to the coaches and trainers after seeing how he gets through each day's workout.

Offensive coordinator Greg Knapp said that decision wouldn't come until later in the week, but indicated Hasselbeck made a good first step Wednesday.

"He was a little bit out of football shape because he hasn't been able to run much, obviously, but for a first day back he did a pretty good job," Knapp said. "We split the reps between him and Seneca throughout the practice."

Knapp said Hasselbeck didn't show any signs of pain or discomfort.

"The fact he went through the whole practice in each period and got reps was a good sign," Knapp said.

Hasselbeck said he had a setback Monday while working out and couldn't have thrown the ball at all that day, but felt much stronger Wednesday.

The question now is how well he bounces back from Wednesday's work and how practice time is divvied up the rest of the week. If Seneca Wallace is going to wind up as the starter for a third straight week, the Seahawks will want him to have the maximum practice time to prepare.

"It's one of those things where I want to be fair to the team, I want to give everybody everything I've got and hopefully be out there," Hasselbeck said. "But at the same time, I want to be fair to Seneca. If for some reason I'm not able to go, he needs to prepare to play.

"Today was a good start. We'll see how tomorrow goes."

Wallace said it's not an ideal situation, but he understands the drill having been a backup for most of his seven seasons in Seattle.

"It's tough because you don't get into a rhythm switching plays two or three at a time," Wallace said. "But you just need to make the best of the plays you get.

"I don't know what's going to happen, but you still have to get ready to play. I've been through this before. You just have to step in, get the play and know the offense and then do the mental reps for the plays you're not getting."

Hasselbeck said there's a difference between practice throws and game throws and he'll leave it up to others to figure out if he's ready by Sunday.

"I'm going to give 'em what I've got," he said. "If it looks like it's good enough, then fine. But if Greg Knapp and Jim Mora say thanks for the effort but it's not good enough, then I'm fine with that, too."

But Hasselbeck noted there is sense that "each guy has to dig deep right now" because of the team's 1-3 start. And without question, he's grown tired of watching helplessly from the sideline.

Asked about the difficulty of missing nine games last year and now two already this season, he acknowledged that hurts nearly as much as his ribs.

"It's been hard," said Hasselbeck. "You said nine (games last season), I feel like I missed the whole thing. Last year, to me, was just kind of a wasted year unfortunately.

"The last two weeks have been tough, knowing that we're trying to win some games and not having anything to offer."

What's his upside when he does play? Are we talking top 10? 5? His first game was a great one, throwing for 279 yards and 3 touchdowns but it was against the Rams.

Of course to close out the year (weeks 14-16) he plays the Texans, Bucs, and Packers. More easy matchups.

my instincts say at least one more week away.
This is my thought as well. With a similar injury, McNabb missed two games, had a bye, and now seems ready to return. What worries me, and should concern the SEA staff, is the patchwork Oline that has given up 8 sacks in the last two games.

Seahawk's are 1-3 and in need of a win - badly. It is/was not the same situation with McNabb & the Eagles. Also, the Jags simply do not put much pressure on the QB. In my opinion, if Hasselbeck can play, he will. I do not own Hasselbeck and rate his chances of playing at 50-50. If he does play, I think he will do well.

Hasselbeck expected to start Sunday

Matt Hasselbeck, QB SEA

News: All signs are pointing toward Matt Hasselbeck returning to quarterback the reeling Seahawks on Sunday against Jacksonville. The three-time Pro Bowl passer looked sharp while completing a second consecutive practice Thursday. It's his first work since he broke a rib Sept. 20 on a goal line dive at San Francisco. Top receiver Nate Burleson says he expects Hasselbeck to be throwing to him Sunday. Burleson cites Hasselbeck dramatically increasing his repetitions with the first-team offense Thursday plus the fact he had zip on his deep throws.

Analysis: It appears safe to get Hasselbeck back in your starting lineup, and he has the chance to play well in Week 5. The Jaguars are No. 31 in pass defense, so consider Hasselbeck a good Fantasy option. Seneca Wallace would return to the No. 2 role in Seattle if Hasselbeck returns as the starter.

They cannot afford to go 1-4, I expect Matt to be back

In addition to update from other sitePer The Roto, take it for what it is from them

Matt Hasselbeck (ribs) returned to a full practice on Thursday after being "limited" in Wednesday's workout.

Hasselbeck reportedly looked sharp, and signs are finally starting to point toward him starting this week against the Jaguars. He "dramatically increased" his first-team reps, and Nate Burleson said expects Hasselbeck to be the one throwing to him on Sunday. He'll be a risky play behind a banged up line, but the Jags are a nice matchup at Qwest Field.

Burleson likes Hasselbeck's chances of starting for Seahawks

Associated Press

RENTON, Wash. -- All signs are pointing toward Matt Hasselbeck returning as the reeling Seattle Seahawks' quarterback for Sunday's home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The three-time Pro Bowl passer looked sharp while completing a second consecutive practice Thursday. It's his first work since he broke a rib Sept. 20 on a goal-line dive at San Francisco.

The Seahawks officially listed Hasselbeck as limited on the daily practice report it filed to the league. However, Hasselbeck took the majority of snaps with the first-team offense, with backup Seneca Wallace left with just a few.

Hasselbeck didn't look very limited to top receiver Nate Burleson. He expects Hasselbeck to be throwing to him Sunday.

"Yeah, he wouldn't be taking as many reps as he has this week if he wasn't," Burleson said. "Plus, he looks good, really zipping the ball in there."

Burleson was smiling while talking about Hasselbeck's return. Seattle (1-3) has lost three consecutive games, with Hasselbeck missing 2½ of them.

"When you are labeled a starter at quarterback in this league, that's a big deal," said Burleson, who's second in the NFC with 24 catches. "Regardless of whether the backup is better, or as good, they want him on the field. And by 'they,' I mean players, coaches, fans, the whole organization.

"It does more for the morale of the team than anything."

The Seahawks could use a pick-me-up. Five starters, including three-fifths of the offensive line, already are out for Sunday's game.

Seahawks coach Jim Mora said this week that there is a "major sense of urgency, a huge sense of urgency" following a blowout loss at Indianapolis, which has Seattle essentially three games behind first-place San Francisco (3-1) in the NFC West because the Seahawks already have lost to the 49ers.

How good is JAX pass rush and how good is SEA o-line? JAX only has 3 sacks on the season, but SEA oline is ranked with a D- according to FBG.

I don't want to start him only to have him go down at first contact.

Ugh.I hate to even consider this, but the reality is too true to deny. LT Walter Jones is done. Its time for the team to move on. Sure, they will give him whatever time he asks for, but they need to make plans to move on without him if a miracle doesn't happen.LT Brandon Frye hasn't played that poorly in a fill in roll (aside from the Freeney abuse), and RT Ray Willis is a bright spot in my opinion. Willis got hosed on two holding calls in the Indy game. One was completly a phantom call and the other was on QB Seneca Wallace and his inability to step into the pocket (as opposed to running for his life in fear). In fewer words, I'm not worried about the tackles for this game.Guards is another story. LG Rob Sims is developing into a solid player, but he's out. Mansfield Wrotto is a mauling run blocker, but his pass blocking technique needs work. Rookie Max Unger isn't really ready for primetime yet, but they are going to suffer through his growing pains as he will likely develop into a solid player as well.I don't know that much about the JAX pass rush, but if the Jags are depending on the ends to bring pressure I wouldn't sweat it. If their primary pressure is coming up the middle I would be more concerned.

Although I think at best he starts and finishes the game, my biggest concern is Haselbech (sp?) starting and getting tossed around for a quarter and getting pulled.

Have the Jags "tossed around" any quarterbacks this season? I know they don't have many sacks, but have they put a lot of hits on quarterbacks?

I'm not sure, but with his o line, it only takes one 300 pounder to land on him and he's knocked out of the game. Again, throwing positive vibes his way and not predicting anything, that is just the worst scenerio for Hasselbeck owners, which I am one.
