Hawthorne (1 Viewer)

Seattle Seahawks LB David Hawthorne (back) hurt his back during the team's Week 1 and will need further evaluation, reports Eric Williams, of The Tacoma News Tribune.

I can't comment on the back injury, but according to this:

http://sea.scout.com/2/1001987.html

he only played 33 of 66 snaps, while seattle had a 3 lb set in there 37 of 66 snaps.

- Herring was the nickel linebacker next to Tatupu, while Hawthorne’s playing-time was limited to base and goal-line situations.

So...is this week an aboration, or a sign that he's back. Anyone happen to know snap counts?
May have been a few more snaps in subpackages for Hawthorne last week, but he was still off in most passing situations. Most of his tackles came on running plays, as Tatupu continues to have just so-so impact at the point of attack. Tacked on a couple tackles in the soft zones against Gates, too.

I think Curry went out with an injury early which may have resulted in a few more snaps for Hawthorne yesterday.

Defensive Personnel GroupingsSeattle’s defense was on the field for 78 official snaps against the Chargers on Sunday. Below is a breakdown of how the coaching staff used personnel groupings and each player’s individual snap counts.

“Base” (4 DL, 3 LBs, 4 DBs) personnel was used on 48 plays (30 passes, 18 runs)

“Nickel” (4 DL, 2 LBs, 5 DBs) personnel was used on 8 plays (7 passes, 1 run)

“Dime” (4 DL, 1 LB, 6 DBs) personnel was used on 19 plays (17 passes, 2 runs)

“3 DL, 2 LBs, 6 DBs” personnel were used on 1 play (pass)

“5 DL, 3 LBs, 3 DBs” personnel were used on 2 plays (2 passes)

Defensive Line Snap Count

21 – Kelly Jennings – 76 of 78 (97.4%)

23 – Marcus Trufant – 33 of 78 (42.3%)

27 – Jordan Babineaux – 30 of 78 (38.5%)

28 – Walter Thurmond – 37 of 78 (47.4%)

29 – Earl Thomas – 78 of 78 (100.0%)

31 – Kam Chancellor – 1 of 78 (1.3%)

34 – Roy Lewis – 20 of 78 (25.6%)

36 – Lawyer Milloy – 77 of 78 (98.7%)

51 – Lofa Tatupu – 78 of 78 (100.0%)

54 – Will Herring – 42 of 78 (53.8%)

57 – David Hawthorne - 50 of 78 (64.1%)

58 – Dexter Davis – 18 of 78 (23.1%)

59 – Aaron Curry – 23 of 78 (29.5%)

79 – Red Bryant – 45 of 78 (57.7%)

90 – Colin Cole – 47 of 78 (60.3%)

91 – Chris Clemons – 58 of 78 (74.4%)

92 – Brandon Mebane – 33 of 78 (42.3%)

94 – Junior Siavii – 24 of 78 (30.8%)

95 – Kentwan Balmer – 35 of 78 (44.9%)

98 – Raheem Brock – 46 of 78 (59.0%)

- Trufant was injured on the third defensive play of the 2nd half and would not return.

- Milloy appeared to suffer a leg cramp following a 2nd-and-8 play in the 4th quarter. San Diego was running a hurry-up offense, which meant he had to stay on the field the subsequent 25-yard pass to Malcolm Floyd. Chancellor came on to replace Milloy, and Philip Rivers clocked the ball. Milloy returned on the following play, and rushed the quarterback in each of the game’s final three plays.

- Curry was injured rushing the passer on a 2nd-and-10 play in 2nd quarter. Herring replaced Curry as the strong-side linebacker in base defense, with Davis and Brock replacing Curry as a defensive end in dime personnel.

- In addition to playing the “5” technique, Bryant saw time at defensive tackle in nickel and dime packages after Mebane left the game.

- Cole also saw playing time at defensive tackle in nickel and dime packages.

- Clemons dropped into coverage on 5 zone blitzes, which did not fool Rivers, who completed all 5 passes for 109 yards.

- Siavii played both tackle spots in 22 base personnel snaps, pairing with Mebane, Cole, and Balmer.

- Balmer saw time at “5” technique end and “3” technique tackle in base packages, and as a tackle in nickel and dime packages.

- Brock played defensive end in base (“Leo”), nickel, and dime packages, and also played tackle in nickel and dime packages.

I have a chance to pick up Lofa or Hawthorne on the cheap. I was leaning toward Hawthorne since he seems to be improving (1-2-6 solos, not like any of those are great), while Lofa has been very average. But if Lofa is on the field 100 percent of the time, his numbers have to improve right? Dan Connor is also available, but I think I like the Seattle backers better. I hate trading for average, but average is better than the 0 I have been getting from Greg Camarillo in a flex spot.

So Did Hawthorne produce good numbers last week because Curry went down early in the game, getting his 3rd down work? Or did he just have a good game?I thought about starting Hawthorne this weekend, but now it looks like Curry is going to be ready for the game. I'm not asking if I should start him, just trying to figure out if he'll have good tackle opportunity this weekend.Anyone?
