HBO - Song of Ice&Fire Series -Varsity Thread - no TV only whiners (2 Viewers)

This may be a "wait and see" detail, but why in Qarth does the masked lady ask Joarh Mormont "Will you betray her again?" referring to Daenerys?

Did he already do something that i'm forgetting? Or is that a glimpse into something the show hasnt revealed yet?

He was a spy for Varys in S1. He told them she was pregnant. Hs received a royal pardon for his help, which tipped him off that Dany might get poisoned.

Does anybody else feel like the writers have really taken away a lot of the intrigue and mystery from the story?

There is no Tyrion's chain apparently. Something that you wondered wtf was being built for much of the book and what it's purpose was. Robb's trip to the Crag and what is supposed to happen there and Cat's asking for the sword when with Jaime would have a lot more power and intrigue had they taken place after bran and rickon were killed and they found out about it. Also, there is virtually no mystery there as well as we seemingly we're beaten over the head about those orphan boys. They should have left the only mention of them be that of the earlier episode. Bringing them up as bran and co approached the village and then having them run through the scene and be called by their "family" inside when Theon was there is a little much. Does any non-reader think for a moment now that bran is dead? There is an Internet rumor that Dagmer Cleftjaw is actually Reek. My opinion is that the character Reek isn't in the show at all. So there again is no intrigue and reveal about this character. Dagmer is replacing Reek's nasty influence on Theon, but he is not in fact Reek/Ramsay. Ramsay will show up eventually as suggested by Roosevelt Bolton earlier. Perhaps next season or in the finale. At that point or later we will get Theon as "Reek" but it won't have as much meaning.
I would say a number of the things mentioned in your spoiler are changes that make sense given the time constraints of the TV show. There is a TON of storytelling in the books, and some things are going to need to be left out, and even then some of the things that make it are given very little time (i.e. mentioned in a conversation instead of being seen, etc.)
I thought the chain storyline was pretty obvious through-out the book, and so don't really miss it that much. I would be interested in non-readers thoughts on the orphans boys and if that fooled anyone watching that didn't already know, but I'm not going to ask. They could have been a bit more clever with that storyline though, I agree. As for Reek, I wasn't a big fan in the books of his char, and felt like a char as cruel as that would have been struck down by someone before ever reaching his level of power.
All in all, I really enjoy the fact that there are differences between the book and the show, as it helps make it that much more interesting to watch. Even when it is somewhat of a contradiction to the book story, I feel it is ok as they (so far) have done a good job of keeping the main threads running true, IMO.

I highly doubt they would have reek1 in the show. I mean he had sex wtih dead bodies. even though its HBO thats pretty f'ed up.And as far asthe qarth differences go, I like th show better than book, although it will be interesting to see what they show in the house of undying

Pretty much loved everything this week. I still feel like keeping Robb's "affair" truer to the book circumstances would have been more believable though.

Minor Jeyne Westerspoiler.
It's possible. The way they present it in the series comes across as more genuine, however. In the books, Robb marries Jeyne partly out of a sense of honor, which doesn't have the same emotional weight, even if their love grows.

How did I so completely miss that??

So where did all the wolves go? Will they be showing back up this season? If so, who's? I imagine John Snow's wolf will show up again, but is Arya's gone? and what about Brandt's?

As I remember it: Varys told Robert that Dany was pregnant. When Ned asked how he knew, Varys said that Jorah Mormont was a reliable source.

As an aside, I loved that they managed to include the Ned Stark's line about how a man can only be truly brave when he's afraid (originally in the beginning of the first book). :nerd:

I dont know if it's just me, but i love the Onion dude. WOuld love to see him play a bigger role as the show goes on. Also Stannis seems like a Rob clone, wants to lead for the right reasons.

Non-book reader, but i really wish the smoke baby is done with his killings, that kind of murder is ridiculous to me since they could kill whomever they want with the smoke thingy

Me too. Great character in the books, and great character on the show. He reminds me of an older Gerard Butler. He even sounds like Butler.

I really enjoyed Tyrion and Bronn struggling over the pronunciation of that author's name and the reaction when Varys said it a different way. Subtle and funny.

Have a couple questions as it relates to Clash of Kings and Storm or Swords

When Roose Bolton's son takes Winterfell is Roose himself in on it? I can't remember. Also Jon finds the Dragon glass, correct? And is it implied that it's what's used to kill the Walkers?

Episode was slow and the first one I fell asleep on while watching

NEXT weeks should be the best of the year.

Stannis/Davos row into Blackwater Bay - previews looked great.

House of the Undying.

GRRM wrote the Episode 9 - Blackwater.

I'm actually not enjoying season two nearly as much as Season 1. In my opinion, the show went from having 5 awesome characters (Tyrion, Jamie, Ned Stark, Drogo and Viserys) to having one awesome character (Tyrion) - Jamie's had little to no screen time. And those characters who were verging on great, Daenerys and Arya, have backslid.

I think the pacing hasn't been so great this season. 8 episodes of build up with not much actually happening, then probably jamming everything into the last 2 episodes.

Some of the dialog this week was a bit hokey/forced. Yet another "leave us" moment. They must have some kind of once per show requirement for that.

Roose isn't in on it. Ramsay was held captive and would not have the time to get to the Dreadfort, send a raven to Roose, get a response, and then beat Rodrik Cassel to Winterfell.Jon and Ghost find the dragonglass. It is used to kill White Walkers - Sam kills one. Doesn't work on the wights/zombies though.

Arya and Tywin's interaction has been pretty good - I don't see how she has backslid. Stannis, Davos, Margaery, Tywin and Ygritte have been pretty solid replacements for Ned, Drogo, and Viserys. I agree with Daenerys though, her story arc has dragged a bit.

I agree about the pacing, but it is true to A Clash of Kings; the whole book was build up to the last few chapters.

One aspect that I am disappointed in this season is that they didn't go deeper into Tyrion's planning for defense of King's Landing. His construction of the chain in Blackwater Bay showed his brilliance and, frankly, made him the unsung hero. He was (perhaps unjustly) hated by the masses, but did a hell of a lot more to protect them than Cersei and Joffery.

Instead they chose to focus his story on his squabbles with Cersei, which missed the essence of his wildly successful run as the interim Hand of the King.

:goodposting:This season has sort of missed the mark a bit. But Clash really is just one huge set-up for the Battle of the Blackwater. There is plenty of material in Swords, so the next 2 seasons shouldn't disappoint anybody.

While true to the book, it doesn't work as well for me in the show. They've taken plenty of other liberties, I think they could have juggled scenes around a bit more to even out the pace. With a book, I can read as quickly/slowly as I want. With the show, waiting 2 months for something to happen is less than ideal IMO. I guess this is one area where reading the book has negatively impacted my perception of the show, I guess I'm just impatient for them to get to some of the "good parts" that I know are coming, and I'm concerned that they haven't given themselves adequate time to cover them by holding everything until the last 2 episodes (or holding some things over until the following season).I'm with you about the omissions of what Tyrion was doing/dealing with in the books as hand. Having Varys comment on how good Tyrion has been doing isn't the same as showing more of what he's actually done.
I also wonder how they're going to handle the destruction of Stannis's fleet - will they just quickly introduce the chain when needed, or do something different? There's also the other chain Tyrion had created which hasn't made an appearance yet that has later significance. I've been waiting for that one too.

Yeah I could watch an entire series with just those two. Throw in the nutless ghost too for kicks. Just make an entire series about those 3 guys running the kingdom. Have a bumbling king for comic relief. It would be like Excalibur meets Spin City.

I really want to see more of the Jaime/Brienne dynamic. I think this combo has a chance to surpass Tyrion/Bronn and Arya/Tywin in odd couple greatness.

I would almost like to see them get it on. They're physically very similar. I wonder which one has the bigger unit.

I know Brienne is supposed to be a stiff character but the actress playing her is over the top stiff. Almost uncomfortably stiff, will give her a chance as the character develops. Hopefully she pulls it off.

Did anyone else get the impression that Rob finished before they hit the floor? Too many laces and layers to get through, and when they did finally get the clothes off, it looked like he had an American Pie moment.

I think she'll be fine. She showed plenty of emotion when Renly died. I guess her past made her numb and stiff to most things.
