The books describes this a little bit better. It goes into more details of the stillborn child. It mentions that the child has been dead for many years and some other things I don't recall. How awesome is Bronn the Sellsword. The actor playing him has actually made him better than the book by bringing a sense of humor into play. He's one of my favorite characters.

i was telling my wife before this scene that what makes this show so great is that it has no filler. by the 27 minute mark of the show every single scene had something. then i saw the scene with the old man and thought that was the first filler i thought i saw all season, but now you have me thinking i missed the whole point there. funny because the Pyelle character was really only one of the characters i really didn't care about or have any thought about

I always took it as some type of demon. Anyway you couldn't fault the Maegi on her logic.
Another scene that was a bit different was the scene with Joff and Sansa. In the book, she chickens out on pushing him over the ledge. Here it appeared that she was ready to do it. Not sure why they changed that because I think at this point she's still "a good girl."
I also don't recall that Pycelle scene at all in the book.

That's open to interpretation I guess. But with the way she put Dany in her place on "saving" her, I'd go with the former.

True, but he needed to go to have Dany make her own place in the world... As long as he was alive, Dany would have been 2nd fiddle to him...way too much relying on his authority, not her own...Really looking forward to Tyrion at court though....

I am so torn over whether to read the books now or not. If I dip my toe in that pool, it's inevitable that I will have read all the existing books in the course of a week. Then, there will be no surprises for me on Sunday nights for (hopefully) the next 3 years.

need to stay out of here, since I didn't watch last night but:
got the books for father's day. Surprised at how young the Stark's are in the books. Bran = 7, Rob and Snow = 14, Ned = 35. And I think Dany is 13 (that makes Ned's outrage re: assassinating her a little more palatable).

Damn. Didn't they say early in the series that Dany was supposed to be 16 or so? I assumed Robb and Jonathan were more like 20 and 18 respectively and Bran was about 10 or 11, Sansa 13 or so and Arya around 9-10. Those were my guesses based purely on the show.

The show aged them up for a couple of reasons:1. They wanted older actors (easier to manage, nude scenes, etc..)2. Martin had originally written the characters so young because he was going to have a 5 year gap in the middle of the story. He got rid of the gap and has said that, had he known he was going to do that, he would've written the kids older.

This was at the very beginning of the book (Bran was 7 when he witnessed the execution of The Black deserter - making that whole thing a bigger deal too imo). In the show, it seems like a year or two passes over the course of the season (?). Maybe by the time they get into the nitty gritty they are that age.

I'm curious about the reaction of those who hadn't read the books to the finale. Knowing that Dany was going to go into the fire and come out with three little friends was far different than if you weren't really clear on whether dragons ever existed and/or were the stuff of legend. Either way, I thought this was brilliant television, and a proud adaption of the source material.

Great ending, but pretty well telegraphed, IMO. I was far more shocked that Ned's head actually came away from his shoulders than I was that dragons were birthed from Drogo's funeral pyre. In fact, just about everything that happened in this last episode was exactly what I expected to happen, save for Tywin's apparent 180 on Tyrion.

I had no idea the dragons would hatch but I was thinking she will survive the fire obviously and have all the remaining people serve her since she was a Fire repellent woman. The Dragons sets up her story arc beautifully though.But as i said earlier the episode was the worst Thrones episode from the last few months but it was still good compared to other shows. But for a season finale it was all about guys heading off somewhere, seemed like it was setting up another episode where we would get some sort of closure.

I thought the ending was good, but not as good as I was expecting having read the book. I was picturing it at night, with the fire still going, and I'm pretty sure the book had all her hair burned off.
