HBO - Song of Ice&Fire Series -Varsity Thread - no TV only whiners (3 Viewers)

Peter Dinklage walked home with the Best Supporting Actor award last night. I had thought he wasn't nominated, which I thought was a crime, but maybe it was just for the Golden Globes. Good for him! I was excited for him way back earlier in the thread and predicted he'd win some awards. Maybe I was wrong about the plural aspect of my predictions. It's gotta be really tough to actually be a talented actor but have to fill "niche" roles because of his height. Having this awesome role had to feel line a huge weight being lifted off his back.
you are aware he played a dwarf, right? It wasnt the Manute Bol story so I'm not sure how a weight was lifted (or whether a weight even existed).

And you're aware that most dwarf roles aren't exactly the type that send actors up to the podium to collect an award? Getting a role written for a dwarf that's intelligent, witty, central to the story and allows him to actually explore being a character has got to be a welcome change and possibly the role of a lifetime for someone with limited casting options.

Poor guy, you'd think he would have a limo.

I imagine he waddled home.

I know Peter Dinklage is a good actor but I don't understand why his Emmy is so much bigger than everyone else's.

*stolen joke.

I've read 3 books this week. Will post my thoughts on Storm of Swords later. Definitely got way too into the series. Last night I had a dream I was renting an apartment in the Free Cities. Except it was my modern day apartment with a TV and computer, etc. I went down to my favorite local bar and my landlord was there, except his name was Zeb and he was a wizard. I walked outside and The Imp was out front drunk and talking trash so we got in a fist fight but The Imp won. Then I woke up.
lmao, awesome

He's a great actor, but he got the role because of his height. And it is exactly the kind of role that would send ano actor to the podium. Tyrion is the best character in the series.

Of course he got it because of his height, I never said otherwise. I said it it's great for him because it's one of the extremely few and far between, genuinely good roles for a dwarf. And no, not every actor would win awards with it. Billy Barty wouldn't, Willow wouldn't, the black dwarf from Bad Santa wouldn't. It's a once in a lifetime job for a dwarf and I'm glad to see him being appreciated for it.

Not quite. He QUALIFIED for the role because of his height. He got the part because of his acting skills. There are other dwarf actors, just none as good as Dinklage. Hell, if he were normal sized, he'd probably be spoken of in the same light as guys like Jeremy Irons. He's a very good actor. Don't cut him short.

I don't think the lead in the Station Agent was really a dwarrf role, so it's not his first genuinely good role, but I think your main point is certainly true. Getting Tryion is like winning the drarf actor lottery because it's so good and such a rare opportunity.

Put down ADWD about 100 pages from the end. Not sure I'll pick it up again either.

They killed Jon Snow. Not sure there's anyone left I care about, if there was they'd probably die next anyway.

However, the book is weak and quite frankly I would've been fine waiting for 6 to come out before I read 5 because my interest will wane greatly in re-reading 5 when 6 is about to come out.

Never read the books but just watched all 10 episodes on-demand this weekend. Really enjoyed it. Haven't read anything in this thread yet, but I assume this isn't just TV discussion so a lot of book talk (and TV spoilers?)

Some book discussion but if it hasn't happened in the show yet, it goes in spoiler tags. If the show aired, it's free for open discussion.

I'm new to the thread because I just finished the first season of Game. Here's an article on the season 2 characters if you're interested:

http://tvovermind.zap2it.com/cable/hbo/game-of-thrones/game-thrones-meet-faces-season-2/86984

Game of Thrones: Meet the New Faces of Season 2
Not sure I feel happy about this season 2 love story stuff. These books are a lot of things, but a love story they aint. I hope they don't go overboard with this tangent.
I agree - although this show is so incredible, they'd have to work hard to disappoint me.IDK, I think it could work really well, especially considering
what has to happen with the red wedding in season 3. If you can flesh out what happens for Robb to risk his kingship all for Jeyne, the viewers will be much more emotionally invested in them and the consequences.
It's sounding more and more like season 2 will have a lot of book 3 run into it and more "invented" or added scenes. Book 2 unfortunately barely mentions some of the major characters so they don't have much of a choice or the viewers would forget or wonder what is going on with some of them. It could work, we'll just have to see.

so, i've been reading and

got to the part where Rob and Catelyn got whacked. Sorta saw it coming, given the HEAVY foreshadowing, but it still sorta stung reading it. All I can wonder is in two more books, where the hell is the story going to be? I've a few ideas, but
Bring on Season 2 - 3

I think the spoiler just above this enhances the story quite a bit. It was something that was brushed over in the book (a bit)
rob won every battle on the field and ####ed it all up for "love"

]oh, and

the whole Lady Stoneheart thing seems crazy as #### (stumbled on it awhile back - wish I hadn't)

She's gorgeous and y'all are crazy. To be honest, she's never described as exceptionally pretty in the book, so this was a pleasant surprise.

Maybe there are better pics of her, but Osha is hotter than that picture. And Rob did get an infinitely better deal, and if the love story provides nekkidness, then so did we.

Agree to completely disagree, keeping in mind that I'm all about the gingers.Don't get me wrong, Chaplin is cute too, but I don't see the big deal. Wouldn't stand out walking down the street here. Regardless, both girls should get plenty of screen time.

Blew through first season in past three days. Good stuff. Going to read the books before Season 2. Don't read fantasy, ever, but my :nerd: brother is pretty sure I will really dig it. Looking forward to it.

Skimmed the thread, and read the disturbing article regarding the author. If people are literally asking him to hurry up because they are concerned that he won't live to finish the series, I hope he never finishes it. Piss on that terrible sentiment.

On Page 700 of Storm of Swords . . . .things seem like they are about to get interesting
yes, yes indeed.
Whoa.
i suspected robb was next, but not caitlyn. I dont know how you guys kept up on these books without the internet. Was i supposed to know Roose Bolton delivered the final blow? I was always leary of him, but because i've been slowly reading this one i couldn't remember why, so i looked at wiki a bit on robb and him.
i have no doubt this will end up the best show on tv maybe only behind the wire. Maybe.

Season 2 will combine some of Kings and Swords as the beginning of Swords takes place at the same time as the last several chapters of Kings. I cant wait for seasin 2!!

what do you mean? (see bolded in the spoiler))

. The boltons, both roose and the *******, vex me. Can somebody who followed better explain them and the bloody mummers a bit to me. I feel like i missed something. They all felt like "bad guys" to me but i was never really sure what was going on. Mind you, im not done with swords yet, i just finished arya's chapter after robb got whacked. Maybe george's intent with those characters is ambiguity?

when reading the death i didnt realize it was roose at the time. Only when i went and looked on wiki at robb's bio just for background that i may have forgotten/missed afterwards did i learn it was roose who stabbed him in the heart. I wasnt sure if i missed something in the book or if i spoiled a reveal for myself.

I believe this fact comes to light a little later down the road. There were hints/cues, but I think it is flat out discussed later (not in Swords).

What makes this series tough (well and awesome) is that once something happens or is revealed you want to go re-read portions, but there is too much volume sometimes to find what you're looking for. The awesome part of the tv show is being able to re-experience everything. I will likely re-read during the season as well. Kudos to hbo for picking this up and prompting more people to read books again. I hadn't in a while.

my take:
Bolton was a Stark/North bannerman (or maybe a Tully bannerman before Robb declared himself King of the North). He cuts a deal with Tywin and Frey and turns on Robb once he realizes the war cannot be won.The Bloody Mummers were sell swords/terrorists brought over from __________ by Tywin Lannister to wreak havoc. At some point (I don't think this is well discussed), Vargo figures out that if he goes over to the North's side, he can take hold of Harrenhal. Survival and moving up in the world, being the two themes.

I think you pretty much nailed it on the head here. Roose is a calculating, cruel ******* whose every move is made in his own interest. In every battle he commands, he ensures that the men of other lords were in the heaviest fighting and received the most casualties while his men remained unscathed. He obviously is playing both sides waiting for the opportunity to improve his place in life. He reminds me of Walder Frey actually. He's only in this struggle for what he can get out of it. If Tywin loses at the Blackwater, I think he "stays" loyal to Robb and is likely given much if they win the war. In truth, he's good at the game in that sense. However, I hope he comes to a gruesome and painfully slow demise at the hands (or teeth) of one of the Starks. Maybe Faceless Arya, that would be awesome.

OK, here is my #####fest of a spoiler

OK, I have now read all of them and I want to strangle this fat :nerd: ******* Martin. I have read probably 5,000+ pages by now and nothing has really changed. Every single character I gave two craps about is dead or marginalized out of the main story line completely, and in his/her place characters I don't give two craps about. At the end of Dance with Dragons, Dany is still wasting her time with slaver scum in Mereen, Lannisters still hold the iron throne, Starks are still totally screwed, Jon Snow just got fragged by his own men, Bran is underground, Rickon we still have barely heard from, and anyone remotely "good" just kind of sits on their ### not doing ####.

Honestly I don't know if I am going to pick up the next book. It's like a freaking soap opera the way characters and subplots keep getting added, and if they are all meshing together some time down the line I honestly don't know if I will care by the time I get there.

Furthermore, this fat :nerd: 's obvious love of torture and everything grisly and grim just makes the reading harder and harder to get through in each book. People who compare him to Tolkein are nuts. Tolkein wove together a heartrending but also tender and inspiring tale, and managed to do so in under 2,000 pages from beginning to end. 5k into this series I don't see it going anywhere soon. For those of you on books 1 or 2 winter is still coming...

I have only read 1-3 and about 250 pages of 4. Is this safe?

I feel similarly, though
Arya is still around, as well as Tyrion and they have been the most interesting characters throughout to me along with Jon who I don't think is out of the game yet. I've never really cared about Dany and find most of her chapters tedious, so not much has changed there. I have hope he can wrap this up in an interesting way, but the luster is definitely diminished for me compared to the first 3 books. And this guy can't hold Tolkein's jock regardless.

I have hope he can wrap this up in an interesting way, but the luster is definitely diminished for me compared to the first 3 books. And this guy can't hold Tolkein's jock regardless.
I was really into Dany's character until she spent two entire books vacillating on what to do and mooning about boys. I mean, the #### she pulled in Astapor was epic and really was the last moment in any of the books where I was like "F YEAH!" but then she spends all that time just hanging around, while totally ignoring and neglecting her dragons, which were the coolest thing about her character. But seriously dude needs to learn what character development is and how to carry a thread if he's going to go this deep. The Stark family, which were the main characters for first two books, while still around in some form are simply not a focus any more. Focus has been the Lannisters, the Boltons, the freaking Ironborn (who CARES!!!), and the Martells. And for what? So Quentyn can just get freaking toasted by Rheagal and the most significant outcome is what becomes of his bones? I get that Rheager is more important to the fate of the seven kingdoms, but for pete's sake just do something. All these feints and false starts: Myrcella's rebellion, Myrcella getting her face sliced, Asha and the Kingsmoot, Dany and Yunkai, WTF? When does this crap end and when does something actually decisive happen? How could he possibly end that book with the Bolton's not getting their just rewards? Cmon man, realize that your readers have finite patience, figure out some plot ahead and time and stop stringing us along. I know I'll read the next book but if it is meandering as the last two screw it.
