What?
Sorry, paperback version of Dance with Dragons comes out Oct 29th. I'm cheap and technology adverse.
I'm guessing with the paperback version coming out now, that hardback sales are starting to decline. Which gives me hope that the 6th book should be coming out sometime next year? And yes, I really think Martin could have had the 6th book a lot sooner, but with the popularity of the series, he's trying to squeeze every last dime out of this.
The paperback date has been set for a long time, my guess is to milk the hardback sales as long as possible. I've been waiting a long while for the paperback because I'm too cheap to shell out $20 immediately plus wait another 5 years for the next one.

I absolutely hate that this quote is out there without a spoiler warning for non-book readers:

Following last season's brutally violent Red Wedding, HBO's Game of Thrones will present another colorful — and potentially tragic — marriage ceremony when Season 4 premieres in spring 2014.

"It's going to be the wedding of the year, and as memorable in its own way as our wedding last season," promises the books' author, George R.R. Martin, of the marriage of King Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson) and Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer). "It's what the fans call the Purple Wedding, based on the color of the wine, which plays a big part."

Martin says the wedding scenes "look spectacular. The bride's dress incorporates roses, there are 77 courses at the dinner feast, and there's some wonderful halftime entertainment."

Yeah WTF is up with that??

Ouch.

Good. I hope the whiners see it and get it ruined for them.

I figured the wedding would be episode 2 to soak the hatred after the offseason.

The humiliation of Tyrion will he interesting. They've toned down the deformity aspect but Dinklage can show the hurt when others are bagging on him. It should be great.

I don't. I like to see people shocked and appreciate the story.

Looks like we are getting some Dance with Dragons material this season. With the divergent timelines for Crows and Dragons, and with the show moving some things up, GRRM better get writing!!!!

Yeah, Martin got himself all ####ed up timeline-wise. There are parts of AFFC that happen about 2/3 of the way through ASOS. And one character was almost a year in front of the end of AFFC when it ended. Lots of ADWD happened during/immediately after ASOS. So, I can see them mixing it together the way it should chronologically be.

Still expect them to be mostly done with everything up to ADWD by the end of season 5.
:goodposting:
The more I think about it, I feel seasons 5 and 6 are a mash-up of Crows and Dragons put together chronologically. They definitely will get 2 if not somehow 3 seasons out of that material. If Winds of Winter isn't out by spring, then who knows when a Dream of Spring (or a Time for Wolves) will be out. Then the show is either 1. totally screwed; 2. goes on hiatus; 3. goes its own way; or 4. uses info from GRMM but spoils the books.

Not TV related, but I was rereading the sections at the end of ADWD trying to figure out (with the help of some great internet forum threads) what was really happening back at Winterfell towards the end of the book and I got curious about Roose Bolton.

After reading all the book passages that relate to him I was left wondering, what the hell is Roose Bolton?

Care to elaborate?

His age is a little ambiguous, he leeches himself and says that Ramsay (his *******'s) blood is bad since he doesn't use leeches, his eyes are pale/ice colored (this is mentioned maybe 100 times), the circumstances surrounding his other son's deaths is ambiguous, his house has been a historical enemy of the Starks and Roose betrayed them.

I think he may be some sort of agent for the Others. Or maybe even half Other himself. Possibly via the Night King story from Old Nan or something.

I just finished the first book and started the second book. HBO is running a season 1 marathon today so I'm re-watching that. It's my understanding that the series has/will go like this:

Book 1 - Season 1

Book 2 - Season 2

Book 3 - Season 3 and 4

Book 4 - Some elements in season 3 and 4

Is that a good ballpark estimation so far?

Yes. I'd say book 4 and 5 both will seep into this season and both be seasons 5 and 6 as they overlap chronologically quite a bit.

I've avoided the HBO series so far because I want to finish the books and then watch the series all at once in the gorge of a lifetime.

What season do you think will get through the end of ADWD? Season 5? Season 6?

Have they said how many seasons it will be in total?

Producers have mentioned a possible total of 7 seasons, which is logical given the lifespan of most shows. My guess, as I mentioned before in this thread, is that they'll be done with ADWD by the end of season 5. There's a lot that can be trimmed from AFFC/ADWD, and they're already doing it.

The problem with that is HBO is going to run out of material soon, so they may have to stretch some stuff out. If Books 4 and 5 will be squeezed into season 5, there will be a problem. Book 6 isn't out yet, and Book 7 is just a dream right now. And who knows how long those books will be or whether GRRM actually makes it an 8 or more book series instead. I also think there is enough material in books 4-5 to cover two seasons if need be.

no problem, the show will finished before the books are out

Love this kind of ####.
