HBO - Song of Ice&Fire Series -Varsity Thread - no TV only whiners (2 Viewers)

So - random, minor plot question: since the Magnar got a hammer claw in the brain will it be Tormund who marries Alys Karstark - or will they do away with that whole thread?

I thought the episode was well-done, though the whole logistics of the gate(s) will be nitpicked to death. The sweeping, long camera shot when Jon came down from the Wall was impressive.
I thought the same thing but I think that's going too far in the story. They've already changed so many things that happen in the north that I'm not sure where they're headed. Hell Sam wasn't even at this attack IIRC. He was still a wuss on the boat to Braavos/Old Town and now they're portraying him as this honorable man type.

I don't remember the huge scythe from the book. That was pretty badass

from a cinematography standpoint, the one-shot from when Jon Snow came down from the Wall until Ghost was let out of his pen/cell, was phenomenal. really rare for TV, let alone motion picture.

It might have only been 30 seconds or a minute but that was a nice tracking shot

better term. thanks for the correction.
Not to take anything away from your point. I was poking fun at the True Detective nerds.

You got one take of Jon Snow, Ygritte, Styr, Tormund and others all kicking ### in one shot. Then you get a direwolf coming out after that....sweet.

In the books the son of the Magnar that was killed gets married IIRC. The problem with the Thenns in the show is that they are cannibals.

Yep, that was awesome. Although for some reason whenever they do a shot like this, it seems to scream"HEY! LOOK AT THIS COOL #### WE'RE DOING!"

badass episode. Thorne was a badass. Snow was a badass. Tormund and Magnar were crazy. Unleashing Ghost made our viewing party erupt. Sam's no-scope headshot was great. Jon killing that dude with a hammer. the scythe was badass.

but the MOST BADASS thing was the Giant who fired a damn arrow/spear and knocked a crow off the wall and into the fight down below. that was insane.

Did mance sacrifice the south of the wall crew on purpose just to weaken castle black for the real push of the second wave?
I don't think it was a sacrifice. The plan as I remember it was for Tormund and crew to climb the wall and attack from the south, and open the gate for Mance and his army. In the books, Tormund, Styr, and Jon Snow had about 200 men...more than enough to accomplish the task if Jon Snow hadn't warned Castle Black.

Dammit. Napped and figured I'd get up and watch it on DVR, but the friggin storm knocked out my Direct TV signal so I got like 2 minutes of Sam kissing Gilly and that's it. Went to HBO Go to see if I could watch it now, but it's telling me my DTV account doesn't include HBO which I HAVE ON RIGHT NOW :loco:

I've set up for a later recording. Was this episode any good? I was a little worried that budget constraints could make it less epic than it should be.
it was pretty good and HBO spent more money on that episode than any other in HBO history

somehow I thought Stannis would show up at the end and save the day
Whoa. I thought sure that part would be in this episode
Stannis doesn't arrive until after Mance's second attack.

Yeah, Jon Snow is speaking with Mance when it happens...wonder if there will be time for that whole attack in the last episode or not...maybe they're attacked but we don't see the conclusion for a cliffhanger or something.

They should have made that more clear; The Night's Watch preparing against the force from the South. As it is in the show, it made little sense for Rayder's main army to even show up at the Castle Black portion of The Wall.

If HBO does go back to the wall briefly in the next episode, I wonder if they will tease the ultimate endgame with the wildlings, i.e. letting them through so as to avoid having 100,000 zombies to deal with.

Well said. Lots of badassery in this episodes. I started clapping when I saw the giants.

So, wwhy did they change it from Snow killing Ygritte to the boy? So much less impactful as a death, as a vehicle for Jon's character development, and there didn't seem to be a single reason for it. He could have picked up a bow just as easily and done it himself.

Other than that great episode. That was the only departure I objected to.

I don't think Snow killed her in the books.

From Wiki

Ygritte continues to Castle Black with Styr's band, but Jon has forewarned the castle of their arrival and the attack is thwarted. Along with the rest of the wildling band, Ygritte is killed, mortally wounded by an arrow. Jon finds her on the battlefield, where she dies in his arms.[4]

Thought he knew it was her.

Jon didn't kill her, but felt as if he did. It was the same type of arrow as he used, but had different fletching. However, him going back and warning Castle Black, along with teaching his brothers to shoot bows effectively did kill her. If I recall he dreams that he was the one who killed her.

Exactly. I just re-read it.

Is this freaking turd Martin done? I haven't heard anything about a possible release date for Winds of Winter in months. What the hell is this guy doing?

ETA: I think I just killed Arya

For TWOW, when I have a date, you will have a date. I'm now on Twitter, Del Rey Spectra has a number of social media platforms, and I promise you we will put the word out as soon as we know. All I can say is that George is hard at work, and we hope to have it reasonably soon. I currently have 168 pages that he submitted back in Feb 2013 in order to receive a contracted payment, but I know more exists, because he keeps talking about chapter he hasn't yet sent me. In fact, when we wanted to put an exclusive excerpt on the A WORLD OF ICE AND FIRE app-a magnificent thing which you all should buy and use!-he suggested the second Tyrion chapter, which I then had to remind him was not in the sample I had.

The show made it pretty clear that the infiltration team was going to wait to see Maynce's signal fire from outside the wall. So he needed to be there.

Anyway, I thought it was a great episode, probably one of my favorites from the whole show. I'm looking forward to watching it again. Getting all of those fight scenes coordinated so they could film the way they did was a marvel. The giants and mammoths looked great, and they even did a good job of plausibly avoiding showing what was supposed to be a 100,000 participant army. I wonder how they'll handle the final showdown with Stannis. Do they show it or gloss over it like Tyrion's first battle?

man if GRRM only has two Tyrion chapters written, I might just peace out and let HBO finish the damn story.

So many non-book readers are walking around moping about how GRRM is about to execute another of their favorites, Tyrion.

I just nod and say he's a tricksie *******.

Good God. He's been working on this book for 3 years and his editor only has 168 finished pages?!? This has Dance with Dragons written all over it again. I'm thinking 2022 before this series is completely finished. Hope he makes it. Hell, I hope I make it.

HBO is gonna finish the story long before the books come out

While I'd really like to read how it ends, the 1st 3 books are enough for me to be thankful the guy put pen to paper. Everything else is gravy.

Seems like he knows the broad strokes of how it goes from here but is probably struggling to make all the details meet (or make up some new ones). He's set a pretty high bar for himself.

And once HBO has finished the story, his motivation to complete the books will wane.

I just think it will give him motivation to come up with an entirely different ending.

I would assume if HBO wanted to jump ahead of the books, Marin would be on board.

I don't think it will come to that.

Clearly from that update from him publisher his only motivation is to receive his contracted payments. So don't think he is moving any faster than the bare minimum.

It will be awesome if all the HBO people come in here and post spoilers before we've finished the books.
