Yeah, but there was still talk of him and that Mance was moving towards the wall. My only point is that they would have some hint at Catelyn at this point if she were coming back. I might be wrong but my sense is they aren't adding it.

Really depends on where that story goes in the next book, no? Seems like a showdown between Zombie-Cat and Jamie is going to happen in short order. If that ends up having implications in the overall story, they can't simply ignore it.

I don't think any TV viewer is going to forget Cat, or that she was killed at the Red Wedding. For the TV viewer, this is still a story of Stark v. Lannister with a little Targaryen and White Walker thrown in on the side. TV viewer would relish the thought of Cat coming back - even if the Lannisters are a bit decimated themselves at this point.

I could see season 5 starting with a body washing up on shore, thoros and berric discovering it, and voila!

It would have been a great cliffhanger, and all the tv-only crowd would have been speculating about a zombie army marching on Kings Landing.

I would have no issue if they cut it entirely. It just isn't a part of the story that interests me and seems tangential to the the rest of the story.

They continue to play up that Brienne is trying to fulfill her oath to Catelyn, so it seems destined to end with Brienne in front of Lady Stoneheart claiming that even though she has Jamie's sword, she is trying to find the girls. That story needs a natural conclusion - the #### kick was not it...

In the books at least there was some continuation of her story. If I remember correctly (and this is testing my memory of the books) Arya had a dream where she pulled the body of Catelyn out of the river and the story of the brotherhood without banners went on as they started hunting Frey's. The TV show basically has had the brotherhood folks disappear as we haven't seen them since the middle of season 3 after the Hound and Baric fight. By the time Brianne starts storming around the riverlands looking for the stark girls this story has already started moving forward and Catelyn is alive and hunting Freys. Seems to me bringing that all back now is out of place as Catelyn has been off screen for a long time and Brienne has been doing her wondering act for awhile without any mention of the brotherhood w/o banners. So given In the books, she had reappeared pretty quickly and that hasn't happened in the show my best guess is they cut it.

I'm also going off of memory...was it a dream for Arya where she saw this or one of Bran's or Jon's through their wolf?

It's worth considering that there is a history on tv of shows going along their own path after leaving the book course even while the books were being written. Walking dead comes to mind. HBO in particular went completely away from the book story with True Blood. If indeed GRRM told the show runners what the ending would be, they could take their own path from here, away from the books, on their way to that shared ending. I would not be surprised.

GRRM has said that if Arthur Dayne had his valyrian sword Dawn he would beat Selmy. But if he did not have Dawn, it would be a toss-up.

In the time period of the GoT universe, those two guys are probably the best fighters. Followed closely by Jaime (with both hands), Khal Drogo, and The Mountain. just IMO.

In the overall universe of ASOIAF, I think Aemon Targaryen (the Dragonknight) is considered the best knight. Here's a pretty sweet description from the asoiaf wiki:

I'd like to see them reintroduce the Brotherhood early next season, hunting Freys & outlaws (too bad they didn't delve very far into their misson to hunt the Mountain & his band.) Not really give them a POV scene, but maybe through narratives & highlights. Mention the name "Stoneheart" through reports to Jaime/Cersei, Littlefinger, etc., and build her up as a mysterious foe for a few episodes. Brienne & Pod continue hunting for Sansa, etc. Have her captured and make Stoneheart a big mid-season reveal.

Also, I was happy with the way they took the Hound down in the show. I was fearful that they were going to let him become septic & wither away since Rorge, Tickler, etc had already been wasted.

Bronn has to be up there. He fights dirty and is ambidextrous.

Garlan Tyrell is a better swordsman than Loras, by Loras's own words.

Qhorin Halfhand was feared by all wildlings. Jon says Qhorin could've killed him at any time when he fights him and Jon was the best swordsman currently at Castle Black.

Gerold Dayne(The Darkstar) is considered the most dangerous man in Dorne. We haven't seen much of his fighting skill yet, but there's a reputation for a reason.

Areo Hotah is another Dorne swordsman that needs to be on the list. He cut down Arys Oakheart(a Kingsguard) like he was a child.

Strong Belwas has to be considered. His scars are proof enough.

Syrio Forel, First Sword of Braavos, defeated five men with a stick.

Victarion Greyjoy is a monster to deal with, especially if you're fighting on a boat.

Personally, I would probably still choose Barristan Selmy. Jaime with two hands would probably be neck and neck with him.

For whatever reason, I have it in my mind that Howland used his net (his daughter uses one in the books) to screw Dayne up long enough to give Ned time to kill him.

I do think though, that modern entertainment media has more or less trained us to expect that everything ties up in a neat bow. I don't know whether Martin feels that same way. At times, I think he didn't feel that way.....but I wonder if success or outside influences would shift his mindset so that everything became some grand reveal or "pop" to keep you reading from chapter to chapter. I think if you look the "Unsullied" show viewers conversations...they're so enamored with the BIG SWERVE!!!!! that's coming next, that I don't think they'd be fine with unfinished business. They're definitely trained to think "everything is everything".... but part of me hopes that Martin doesn't give a #### about tying up loose ends or explaining everything; that Jon's just the kid of a Bar Hag, that Benjen's bones are frozen near the Milkwater and Ned just got lucky at the Tower of Joy.

The article in EW about Season 5 said they thought the Iron Islands storyline would be tossed to the scrap heap. There was a Jayne Poole character in the show (extra). Has there been ANY extraneous girls in the show Ramsey could be married to.

I can't believe though that a dumpy little crannogman's gonna take on and defeat The Sword of the Morning. Poison?...maybe....but the only other plausible situation to me is that Reed was in love with Dayne's sister (per the books) and somehow that stopped Ned from getting got.

Being saved could just mean he distracted, stabbed, tangled up, or tripped Dayne before he could kill Ned. It doesn't mean that he fought him in a straight up fight. I mean, the fight wasn't even to begin with since it was 7 vs. 3.

Also, I think it is pretty safe to assume that it was Ned and Selmy that had a thing for Ashara - not Howland Reed.

From the books, it sounds like a lot of people had a thing for her.....but there's theories about Reed/Ashara based on the stories Meera and Jojen told Bran about the Harrenhal tournament years ago. To that, I don't think those were throwaway "flavor" stories.....but explanations.

In those stories, it was Ned who was too shy to ask Ashara to dance. Howland Reed, IIRC, didn't have any interaction with Ashara in those stories.

Just rewatched season 1. Two things caught my attention on second viewing:

1- Mormont makes a big deal about wanting to find Benjen Stark when the Night's Watch ranges north, but they don't seem to address it again afterwards. Reinforces the idea that they may plan to bring Benjen back in some capacity in the show at least.

2- Ned very clearly identifies Wylla as Jon's mother. If I was only a show watcher I'd probably consider the matter closed.

there was always rumors of the sopranos doing that, however with a movie budget, the finale of GoT could be spectacular
