I don't think they wanted to reveal him unless it was necessary. I think it's likely that Arianne is betrothed to Aegon now, since Dorne won't join Dany anymore.

I'm doing a first read through and am on book 3. I think one of the biggest disservices the show has done is probably how Lysa Arryn is portrayed. In the show she's just psycho overbearing mother. In the book, she's psycho overbearing mother, but it's because (correct me if I'm wrong) her father had her abort her child with littlefinger and then sold her off to an old man.

I may me making the wrong conclusion, but as Hoster is dying he keeps saying "Tansy" to Cat who attributes it to Lysa. I didn't quite get what Tansy was referring too, but they make a reference like two chapters later to Tansy basically being abortion inducing. I think it was a Tyrion chapter. If I find it, I'll post it. I just read through that portion like two days ago.

In the part of book 2 I just read a day or two ago he was rambling on (to Cat in reality, but to Lysa in his decrepit mind) about wanting Lysa to forgive him for something, railing against some young that jerk he'd never allow to come near her again, and trying to convince her John Arryn was a good landing spot for her. So I think your take is probably right. Seems like the timeline would be way off for Robin Arryn to be Littlefinger's son unless Littlefinger slipped back in after Lysa and Jon were married.

Been more than a few years since I read it, but that was my understanding as well. Littlefinger challenged Brandon Stark to a duel for the right to Cat's hand in marriage and Brandon beat him up pretty badly because Littlefinger refused to give up. Lysa snuck into Littlefinger's room while he was recovering from his wounds and slept with him. This got her pregnant which her father forced her to abort which went badly and nearly killed her. He later married her off to John Arryn who was already an old man. Because of the previous abortion she had had numerous miscarriages until finally having Robyn who was sickly and prone to seizures.

I'm well into book 3. Dany is freeing the unsullied and we're on our way to the red wedding.If that's one of the show's biggest disservices, it's in mighty good shape.
Biggest takeaway is that I think they did an incredible job with the show so far. Book/season 1 in particular was a great page to screen transition. There's more detail, but they definitely nailed the big main stuff.
The biggest difference to me is the focus on the direwolves. They're much much more important / acknowledged in the books.

I wonder if they had the budget they have now. When they started what thd show runnera would do differently from the beginning. Like the wolves. The house of the undying. Tyrions chain. Maybe even more white walkers from early on.

The way Summer went out this season was a joke. Also, somehow Ghost missed the whole battle of the bastards thing. I'm hoping Ghost goes bananas and Nymeria brings the hammer down on everything south of the Neck, but I'm not holding my breath. They've really made a molehill out of the Direwolves in the show where I thought they were going to be a bit more crucial to the overall story.

Was pretty sad to see Shaggy Dog and Summer get taken down this season, going back a ways, I was also really disappointed at how they depicted Grey Wolf being taken out in the Red Wedding (just shot in his cage, instead of taking a bunch of guys with him like in the book.) IMO, I would agree the minimization of the Direwolves has been the most disappointing aspect of the translation of book to tv. But I made my peace with it way back in the earlier seasons, they had done some interviews where they said they had tried real dogs in season 1 and then cgi and it was just too hard/costly to really work them into the storyline correctly.
Still, Summer should have gone down swinging a little better than that, same as Grey Wolf.

I thought the same thing, as well as the whole Stark warg thing overall. I guess it just really isn't that crucial to the overall story in the end?

Probably hard to do the wolves justice on the small screen.
Now that Arya is back in Westeros, it would be pretty neat to see her reunite with Nymeria somehow next season. Although it would seem she is likely to end up in King's Landing on the prowl for Cersei and a direwolf would kind of give you away somewhat. Also wondering if she and the Hound will reunite as well since they have reintroduced him.
Edit: Plus I had forgotten that in the show version, the Brotherhood without Banners & Melisandre were on Arya's list at one time as well. Melisandre is headed south and the Brotherhood was reintroduced along with the Hound. Seems likely they will all meet up again.

I had the same thought. It's not clear where Martin is going with giving Arya and Jon limited warging abilities. If the show runners didn't see those abilities as particularly important in the end game, the direwolves lose a lot of their significance and it makes some sense to cut them.

Yup. I'm sure there will be a bloodbath episode where The Hound/Thoros/Dondarrion run across Briene/Pod who run across Arya who runs across Melisandre.
Looking back at the episode where they meet and she takes Gendry, I had forgotten that Melisandre had told Arya they would meet again someday.

Been rematching and rereading. This season was a really good season. Still don't like the Hodor origin thing, but that's really the only quibble for me. I can't understand how Cersei thinks she's going to stay on the throne. Having Qyburn and Frakenmountain on the team only goes so far. I still think she and Jaime might by Aerys's kids - she's nuts.
So, in the book, the Plumms - seems like they're a thing in the Lannister lands, and Ben Plumm is with Danaerys. Have to think that's not just a writing coincidence.
Rereading AFFC, I realized it wasn't the Brienne chapters I hated, it was the Cersie ones. She's such an #######, one or two chapters was somewhat entertaining just to see her self delusional inner dialog, but after a while it got annoying having to view events through the prism of such a jerk. I get it Cersie, everyone's dumb and your the greatest.
It's like how it would have been if there had been Joffrey perspective chapters.

So GRRM posted on his not a blog saying he is getting back to work after attending lots of stuff.
In the comments somebody asks him whether he will attend Con of Thrones in Nashville NEXT June/July. And his reply is that he is "afraid not" as he wont attend any Cons (other than world cons or things he committed to years ago) until Winds is finished. So, Winds was due this past March and now he is already saying he cannot attend 2017 events because he might still be writing Winds ....

I've kind of given up on the books. What's the point right? He made his money. He's got the fame. I don't feel he can stay true to the original vision of the books anymore anyway. He's not going to write in the little bits of foreshadowing and the rich history anymore. Who gives a #### about the girl who may or may not have been one of Robert's bastards when you know the end?
It's too bad. But what can you do? Like LOST, this had such potential. But went the cheap route and cashed in.

GRRM commented yesterday that he expects Winds will be out this year. But that he thought that last year as well so who knows.

I am becoming the opposite. I have been lukewarm on the show over the past couple seasons, and would much rather dive back into the books and see what his vision of the world is. I will be watching because that is all of the story that we are 100% sure we are getting, but if I had to choose between the two, and we had a solid release date for the book, I would still go the book route.

Been slowly slogging through A Dance with Dragons over the last year. I read in the throne room and on long trips exclusively. Watch the HBO series last year for the first time so I'm about as current on both fronts as I can be (couple hundred pages left in ADWD). Situations like this are always disappointing because the books provide so much more of a rich backdrop for all that is happening that the show simply can't address because of time & budget constraints.
Sadly I think Martin dies long before the books will ever be finished so much like Karma, I will continue to watch because the series has a finite end but I hate that the book series that I and a good chunk of you have invested so much time in won't have a payoff.

Nope, no WoW updates, but didn't want a pissing match in the other thread.
Nothing has been grabbing me lately as far as books go, so I thought I would start a re-read of the SOIAF books. It's been a long time and I am cloudy with confusion on what happens in the books, show, or both. Only about 125pgs into Book 1, but I am already surprised at some of the differences and the amount of foreshadowing that happens so early. Get a lot of mentions of the faces in the trees and how Cat feels watched at Winterfell. I also didn't remember that it was Cat's prodding in the books that sent Ned south. Wasn't that reversed a bit in the show? It is also just fun now when I actually know who most of these people/houses are. These first several chapters are such an info dump with all the people and places that you need to be familiar with.

Felt the same, Cersei is made out to be such a Machiavellian mastermind earlier in the books but those chapters just illuminated that she's actually just a rich idiot. Season 7 off to a great start. I had the Arya opener pegged within 5 seconds. But it was still nice to watch her exact her revenge. It's weird, the buildup has take so long, that's it just kind of weird watching the payoff. You keep expecting more obstacles and despair, but nope she went Rains of Castamere on the whole crew. I wonder who fills the power vacuum here, my guess would be the Tullys.

Hard to believe I started this thread 10+ years ago. Since then I've flipped 25 houses, had a daughter, and watched my kids grow from babies. GRRM has completed one book.

I would think there would be a frey bannerman more than happy to take over the reins and be a lannister ally. The river lands are still one of Cersei three kingdoms
