HBO's HARD KNOCKS: Dallas Cowboys (1 Viewer)

Some observations from Episode 1...

1) T.O. is a beast of a player. Looks awesome in drills... and will be the most entertaining part of the show.... bar none.

2) In the 20 seconds that Marion Barber was featured, he completely blew up LB Tyson Smith in a blocking drill.

3) The whole fascination with Pacman catching 6 punts at once? I bet every receiver and DB on the team can pull off that trick after a few tries.

4) No human being loves the sight of his own face on TV... or the sound of his own voice... more than Jerry Jones.

5) One episode and 11 days of camp in the books and no mention of Jessica Simpson. That was a surprise.

6) Cowboys training camp looks pretty soft. No hitting policy???? I guess it's early yet... so we'll see.

7) Still the best show on TV in the summer. :hophead:

True words.I have no idea how this works but I bet HBO's decision on which team to feature was interesting.I'd have loved to sit in the initial meetings whey they approached Jones about it. Some teams would probably charge HBO to come in and disrupt camp. I'd say Jones would pay whatever amount HBO asked to be the team they featured.J

He probably would use the advertising money he makes, I found it strange/interesting of the advertising on the sidelines. I seem to remember seeing a blow-up Miller Lite Can, Ford advertisement, and what looked like an Aquafina bottle, plus all the signs along the fencing.

When I worked at Warner Brothers Animation, I worked for a cat named Bruce Timm, who was one of the three guys who made Batman the Animated Series, Batman:Beyond, Superman, Justice League - you get the picture. Dude was a major GEEK icon. Still is, I suppose.Anyway, when we started doing commentaries for all his old shows and the second a new DVD came to him he'd pop it in the DVD player to hear himself talk. Never ever thought I would see that topped but - he can't hold a candle to JJ in the above regard. It's pretty freaking awe inspiring.

But even with out that, JJ is paying whatever it takes to have his mug on HBO each week. I love that guy.J

I hate to say this was my primary observation, but does it appear that Dave Campo has...um...is a big fan of Keith Hernandez & Walt Frazier?

JJ ain't dumb. He knows merch is huge and a few weeks on HBO will push that pretty well....

It was pretty run-of-the-mill stuff, nothing very insightful.

Felix Jones getting to camp will be the most interesting thing in the upcoming weeks - to see if he can stay on the field and split time with MB3.

Also, the Adam Jones vs T.O. competition looks very healthy to me - AJ looks pretty good for not having been on the field for a while.

I forget the name of they guy who sang the Temptations song into a fruit dildo, but I am rooting for him to make the team.

You didn't get to see a lot of who are the sleepers so to speak on the squad. The usual suspects look like they're all primed to have solid years. Terell Owens looks like Superman, I mean it. Witten may not achieve the numbers he posted last year, but he'll come close and Tony Romo will improve from last year.

I enjoyed watching Pacman covering Terell. I know Terell caught some balls, but I was impressed at how Pacman can stay with him on moves, tough moves. I think he's going to help the Cowboys.

Jerry Jones says that Terell is in the top 5 players he's been around as a Cowboy......I'd like to know the 4 others that he thinks may be better.

Aikman and Smith....

I'm glad that Dallas signed Jason Garett, it was definately the right move to not let him go.

It was interesting to hear them talk in the War Room about Mendenhall and Felix Jones. Garett was the guy in Jones' ear, explaining to him how Felix is a situational back and that Mendenhall was more of an every down back and that Dallas already had that in Barber. It was Jones' final decision but you could tell that Garett definately put the spin on it to make sure it went that way, especially since he'll be the head coach here in a year or two.

:goodposting: I think that the Pacman vs TO thing is only going to make e/o better. This team is absolutely loaded for bear at just about every position. It's a great situation for all the young players to have an All-Pro player at so many positions to learn from.

All of the sponsorships you see are a Cowboys Camp thing, not an HBO thing. I was at the camp in Oxnard trying to buy a water from a vendor, but turns out there was only one booth I could water from -- the Aquafina (or whatever brand it was) booth. They literally had a contract where this brand is the official water of the Dallas Cowboys. So yeah, Jerry knows a thing or two about making money ...

I came across the show as I was channel surfing. I enjoyed it, realizing it is filmed and they control the content.

JJ at his introduction to the team: "There are 5 rules to being a salesman...1) Ask for the money 2) I forget the other four".

Players get a room at the Residence Inn (couldn't tell if they had roommates or not). Most teams get to stay in a small college dorm room, with a team mate (re: Kansas City at UW-River Falls).

Crayton looks like he is trying to redeem himself this year.

The WR that was added to replace Terry Glenn looked totally lost.

There is not doubt who runs this team - JJ.

Interesting that they are backing off on the intensity of the workouts. Our coach in college had the same philosophy of quick, quality and efficient drills that Garrett talked about.

Is the TE coach related to Jason Garrett? I would have a hard time seriously listening to that twirp. He doesn't look like he has played a down in his life.

I enjoyed the shameless plug for TOTees.com.

However, I actually like the TO's shirts, might have to pick one up.

He was lost, didn't even play high school football. Keep in mind he didn't really take Glenn's spot in terms of Glenn was the Wr3 if he could play, what he did was take the 80th roster spot. It's kind of the same thing, but kind of not if you follow me.

Excellent episode.

KC's Hard Knocks was way more interesting, but Dallas has the star power.

For the most part yes. But his idea to break away from NFL Properties has not been fruitful so far. That is changing with the team's performance and the marquee names...but has some ground to make up.He will also have to contract out his Conf/Super Bowl Champ product, if that happens. The Cowboy operations are simply too small to handle something like that.

This about sums it up.I found the Hard Knocks featuring the Chiefs to be really interesting. I hope this one matches it.
That was good, but I think the best one is the first one, where they covered the Ravens. The Cowboys were already featured in Hard Knocks, in 2002. I recall it as being deadly dull. I hope this year's edition is better.

Hidden camera.... Tony Romo's bedroom.See? HBO should hire me as a writer.

It was interesting to me the comments about Mendenhall and Jones in the war room back at the draft.
Didn't get to see it... can you give a synopsis? Much has been made about the Cowoys reportedly having Mendy higher (as did I in my predraft rankings - they were 1 and 2) .. but I wonder if there's legitimacy to that. TIA.

So Garrett was the one who wanted Jones? To me that's a good sign, since he's the OC who will call the plays. Of course I'm a Jones fan, but to me any OC who has an influence on who is drafted is looking at who is the best player at the position, so he must have thought Felix was the better RB. I think the "already have that in Barber" was just the line used to convince Jerry.

Yes, that' true-he took the 80th spot on the roster when Glenn was waived. As far as the WR3 spot, there was a short clip of JJ talking to Hurd telling him Glenn was let go and I think motivating Hurd to take advantage of the opportunity. Although I always thought of Hurd as being the WR3 incumbent anyway.

Well, I took it that they didn't need a competition of two every down running backs and Jones was the better fit since he could "compliment" Barber (the every down back) better. Not necessarily the "better" back, but the back that fit their situation better.

True. The overt marketing is not simply a result of Hard Knocks. The Cowboys did the same thing when they were training at Wichita Falls.

Gonna go out on a limb here and say Irvin and Allen. A stretch I know, but they don't pay me to not stick my neck out.

Agreed, probably another sign that Garrett plans to find creative ways to use Jones with Barber (ala Bush and Deuce 2 yrs ago).

Not a big Deon fan, huh?
Jerry is a big prime time fan. Aikman, Smith, Irvin and Sanders.

I noticed how JJ left Hurd hanging after their convo about releasing Glenn.

TO vs Pacman is going to be great for both of them....

Witten's wife is BUSTED.

Looked like Eldarado Owens drives .......... an Eldarado

Loved the tee shirts Owens was selling ... positve motivation and fun at the same time.

Barber destroyed #58 ...... that should have been a bigger bit .. would like to have seen more player reactions , ball busting.

...and Campo does not wear underwear ......WTF

I did not feel that Garret put a spin on it or that he was the one who wanted Jones. My take on it was quite different. Everyone knows Jerry had coveted Felix for awhile but did not really expect Mendenhall to actually fall that far. I'd say JJ had tunnel vision for Felix. When he asked Garrets' opinion I felt Garret was simply weighing the pro's of each but I did not feel he was putting a pro Felix spin on it. I did not detect any bias for either player from Garrett but I think Jerry was simply looking for Garrett say something positive about Felix so he could justify the pick. I think what Garrett said was simply the truth, no spin. That's my thought anyway.

:goodposting: From reading JJ's body language and actions, it was very clear that the Cowboys were going to take take Felix Jones no matter what unless McFadden dropped to them. And Garrett obviously knew this. Unless he was ready to go to war for Mendy, there's no way the cowpokes were taking anyone other than Felix with that pick.

Btw, after watching this episode I'm downgrading Jones. He showed terrible vision, anticipation, and reaction time when he got blasted with that bucket of water by Pacman.

EPISODE 2:

The staff can hardly contain themselves about Felix's skills. It's really a shame from a dynasty standpoint that

Barber is standing in his way for major playing time in the near future. They each hurt the other's value, of course.

That rookie TE Martellus Bennett is going to be a big problem. His attitude sucks. His position coach, John Garrett,

tried to give him instructions, and Bennett acted like a lazy, spoiled kid by  and laughing at him. He's bad news.

Some observations from Episode 2....

1) Felix Jones looks very quick out there.

2) Does Marion Barber have a "No TV" clause in his new contract? He hasn't shown his face or spoken a word in 2 shows.

3) Tank Johnson absolutely abused the o-lineman from San Diego in that sack highlight they showed.

4) Crayton actually has a pretty good sense of humor.

5) That rookie tight end may wind up strangling Jason Garrett's brother before training camp is over.

6) Did T.O. make that kid cry when he taped him up and dunked him in the bucket of ice water? Sure looked like it.

7) Another episode in the books and still no mention of Jessica Simpson.

I didn't see it tonight, i'll have to watch it again next time.About Martellus Bennett, in episode one they said when they drafted him he was immature but was loaded with talent.

I don't like that they knew he was immature and drafted him anyway. TE is a TOUGH position, that's where men play. I didn't like that they had Pasano, a decent TE2 and gave him up and then spent a 2nd round draft pick to replace him, that to me was silly.

I am so much happier with Felix complimenting Marion than Julius.

Great episode. This is the kind of stuff l love. When one of Jones' grandkids was running off with the helmet and one of the coaches said, "Hey, don't let that kid... (and then recognized who it was) Oh yeah. He owns it anyways..."

I love the long shot guys. Puts a different perspective on the games. Sometimes, it's easy to watch a preseason game and get kind of bored at the end thinking the guys playing are scrubs. And then you see a show like ths and see there are really talented kids that didn't even get a chance to see the field in a preseason game.

Good stuff.

J

Anyone else had a good chuckle when Zach Thomas was practicing returning punts, and Crayton said don't pull an ### muscle. Seconds later, the narrator said something along the lines of, " Zach Thomas is no fool, he has someone to massage his ### muscles." I was :boxing:

Very funny stuff. I think Crayton was blown away at how good Zach was at fielding punts.
2) Does Marion Barber have a "No TV" clause in his new contract? He hasn't shown his face or spoken a word in 2 shows.
Barber is notorious for not talking to the media. He is a very private individual.
5) That rookie tight end may wind up strangling Jason Garrett's brother before training camp is over.
He would do better to just listen and learn. I imagine that any of the Garrett boys has forgotten more football knowledge before breakfast than Bennett has accumulated his entire life.

Considering how good Felix is and how well he fits into their offense he would have been foolish not to get behind the pick. Other than TO and possibly Austin, Felix is the only threat they have that can score from anywhere on the field. Felix takes this offense to another level.I have been enjoying the heck out of these episodes. Really enjoyed Roy Williams in the second episode and I am now very intrigued by that young WR (basketball player)we picked up. I don't see him making the team but I hope he is able to slip to our practice squad.
