HC Jim Harbaugh, LAC (1 Viewer)

People point to his 2021 season as a comparison, but there is no way a Harbaugh offense has that kind of volume. Herbert dropped back 674 times that year. Last year? 504.

These numbers you cite are passing attempts but you called them dropbacks.

Per PFF, regular season only:
  • 2024:
    • Chargers QBs had 591 dropbacks - Herbert 581, Heinicke 10
    • Herbert's 581 dropbacks resulted in 504 pass attempts, 41 sacks, and 31 scrambles; that only adds up to 576, not sure what happened with the other 5
  • 2021:
    • Chargers QBs had 740 dropbacks - all Herbert
    • Herbert's 740 dropbacks resulted in 672 pass attempts, 31 sacks, and 36 scrambles; that only adds up to 739, not sure what happened with the other one
Doesn't change your point, but thought the actual data might be of interest to someone.
Fumbles?

Fumbles would either be sacks or rushing attempts.

I like Herbert as a QB, but in doing projections myself, he just doesn't end up much higher than 16-18 for me. Harbaugh has always led a slow paced offense, even in SF, and the volume is just not there to support anything more for Herbert.

FYI, giving Herbert 3,800 yards and 42 TDs as posted above makes him QB5 in my rankings. But those projections are not realistic at all IMO. People point to his 2021 season as a comparison, but there is no way a Harbaugh offense has that kind of volume. Herbert dropped back 674 times that year. Last year? 504.
He was QB11 in my SF league where I rostered him last year, and he has several new weapons. Williams is back, they drafted a WR, and Hampton could be a very decent dump-off option. Plus Ladd in his 2nd season could take another step. And they added Conklin & a solid rookie TE prospect - that’s a lot of help.

And Herbert chips in with the occasional rush & RuTD.

I’m pretty optimistic that with the improved OL + new weapons, Herbert will pretty easily be a top 10 QB.

People are also forgetting how terrible Herberts receivers were...

The Chargers ranked 5th in the league in dropped passes (33) last season.

Heading into week 16, Herbert was 2nd ranked QB with 7% dropped passes.

This followed them into the wild card game, which saw the worst reception % of a playoff team since 2000. So, 4000+ yards is definitely possible if they can minimize the drops, which in turn will lead to sustained drives and that should hopefully provide more TDs.
This is a great point as well. QJ has been pretty bad, and overall the team struggled with drops. Some were drive-killers.

-Should Harbaugh step down as Head Coach of the Chargers?
-Should the NFL suspend him for this? They are going to suspend Rice, is Harbaugh's reckless lifestyle and choices as head coach not a cause for a. moral suspension?
Goodell inflicts this moral compass on most players especially when he has to slam down the gavel

Doubt the NFL touches this

HC, Jim Harbaugh, LAC- For Now...

Michigan $20M fine for cheating, stealing signals.
Cheating is like stealing, certainly sounds like he broke the law and many rules along the way

He should own up to it and do the right thing.
Difference between Harbaugh and Urban Meyer?
Both are proven cheaters or have a moral compass that points at 11:40 vs 12:00 sharp!

Another MOP hot take.

It didn’t happen in the NFL, and it doesn’t involve domestic violence or sexual assault, so the NFL won’t care.

You're an 11:40 man I see

-He just got a 10 year show-cause penalty and to quote the NCAA "Harbaugh ran a program that was largely dismissive of rules, little if any emphasis on following the rules"
And he's a person in charge, why should he be allowed to control 53 men on a roster as acting Head Coach? He's proven he cannot be trusted.

Why should any player be suspended games and paychecks but not Jim Harbaugh?
What the heck is a show-cause, sounds like a slap on the wrist
Goodell should drop the hammer, show this type of blatant rule breaking and cheating is not welcome in the NFL

MoP you’re really not with the reality of the situation and the history of how the NFL treats the NCAA.

Would the NFL?
Should the NFL?
These are not the same thing, would you agree?
I'm saying the NFL should take action, will they is an entirely different exchange/conversation

NFL should do lots of things. They should mandate grass fields in every stadium. They should have paid a ton more in the concussion settlement. They should increase pensions for retired players. They should stop cheating to get Patrick Mahomes more Super Bowls than Tom Brady.

They won't. And...?

That's a lot different than Ray Rice.

No one calls Rashee Rice, Ray Rice.

I'm going to wade into this thread(maybe regret it) buttt, this seems like a call for "justice"
delivered to J Harbaugh. Since the NFL is his current employer that's who delivers it.

This is what you want/see this. What is the punishment? A fine? suspension? both?

My opinion? Nobody if the NFL even comments on this. No action against.

He cheated, walked away without getting caught and is not going to get punished.

That is how the game is played. Crying "foul" now isn't even PR damage to J Harbough
as he probably has no plans to go back to the college level.

You could have posted this as a response to YOUR previous post, and could be having a nice argument with yourself.

By saying the thread title should be changed to, "for now...." implies that YOU believe he's in danger of being fired, or otherwise WILL be disciplined. So the exchange/conversation was started by: YOU

To condescend to someone else when they push back against the notion that YOU present, like they cannot understand that YOU meant the exact opposite of what YOU previously posted, is laughable/bizarre/sad.

MoP you’re really not with the reality of the situation and the history of how the NFL treats the NCAA.

The NFL gave Jim Tressel a 6 game suspension after he signed to be a coach with the Colts after the Buckeyes were forced to get rid of him and the NCAA gave him a show cause penalty because some players traded autographs for discounted tattoos.

So there’s certainly history of the NFL suspending coaches for NCAA violations.

Pete “why would I ever leave the best job in the world at USC? Ohai Seahawks!” Carroll should be able to answer that question for you.

It was actually the Colts that gave Tressel the suspension, not the NFL, though Goodell endorsed it. Tressel also had not taken a job as a NFL head coach, but rather was hired to work in their replay room. There was no impact whatsoever to the Colts from that suspension. That obviously would not be the case with Harbaugh and the Chargers.

More importantly, it was an unnecessary overreach by the Colts and the NFL and also arguably inconsistent with previous situations.

Carroll and Jimmy Johnson both left programs that were hit with NCAA sanctions to become head coaches, although I don't believe they received show cause penalties or suspensions, possibly because they left before penalties were announced. The NFL didn't suspend either.

Chip Kelly left Oregon just before sanctions to become the Eagles head coach, and he was penalized by the NCAA, but the NFL didn't suspend him.

There may be others I'm not remembering.

It’s certainly in the spirit but not on point. Tressel’s decision had been handed down when he tried to jump. Harbaugh’s would have to be retroactive in some way and would disturb his continued employment not his future employment. That’s a distinction that to me and others would be huge though some would say it’s a distinction without a difference.

I feel like Harbaugh knew this was going to likely be the outcome or some type of big punishment by the NCAA so he jumped ship a year ahead just weeks after winning the Nat Title
The NFL is all about punishing folks off the field, the players at any rate. Mixon was suspended when he entered the NFL to my knowledge

I thought it would generate some discussion, Harbaugh looks like a rule bender at best, most fans probably want a little of that in their NFL coach, that seems to be the vibe in here
