Healthy snacks discussion in here (1 Viewer)

I've been dieting for the last month, real diet, not Otis diet... I've even highly reduced alcohol consumption too. I've got my go to snacks, but they get boring, maybe we can exchange some ideas in here.

Mine:

Siggi's vanilla yogurt, blueberrys(or other fruit, sometimes raspberries or strawberries), and a handful of KIND granola.

Loaded with protein, basically no fat/sodium/minimal sugar. Filling and tasty, prob around 200-300 calories depending on how I portion it.

I'm just tired of eating so much yogurt.

What you got?

Almonds, walnuts, cashews

Carrots, bell peppers, snap peas, cucumber etc

Go easy on the fruit. Not really filling and a lot of sugar.

Avocodos

Hard boiled eggs

Nuts

Frozen blueberries  (trust me....they're awesome)

Protein shakes

Grapes

Cottage cheese

Cheese fries, wings, jalapeno poppers and a pitcher of beer

I'm a big fan of a grapefruit snack.  I peel the sucker (which takes a long time), getting all of the bitter pulp off, and then eat it.  Only 100 calories.  By the time I'm done, I'm no longer hungry.

I've found that cranking down generally cures any hunger pangs.

It also generally cures any other problems... like wanting to goto the casino,  wanting another beer, wanting to have sex with your wife/SO, or on the downside wanting to workout or do anything else productive.

What is cranking down?  Using the drug crank?  Or is it some newfangled euphemism for self pleasuring?

My go tos are generally veggies when available...

When in mood for grazing:
• Cut cucumber into "Chips", soak in vinegar with light dusting of salt
• Cut fresh tomato or two up in to wedges with a light dusting of salt/pepper and snack
• Celery or Bell Pepper slices dipped into some sort of hot sauce or greek yogurt
• Air Popped Popcorn
• Pickle slices (Ideally my own house made lower-sodium spears, but claussens work too)

Looking into Sweet Potato "fries" as well. Slice, soak 1hr, season, bake 20min or so, top w herbs and snack

When snacking for sustenance/satiety :
• Hard Boiled Eggs
• Avacado
• Microwave-Steamable bag of veggies (Broccoli, asparagus, etc) with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar

WATER: Drinking a quart of water often helps get the stomach to chill out through a craving period.

I've made sweet potato fries before, but they never get crisp (unless they burn).  Secrets?

Lower temp and longer cook time. I usually just make sweet potato rounds (about 1/3" thick), but I toss them in a little EVOO and bake at 250 for like an hour. Slightly crispy/caramelized on the outside and gooey in the middle.

Olive oil is the way to make regular potatoes crisp in my experience.  I generally bake the potatoes for an hour or so.  Then once they cool off slice into whatever shape you want.  Put some Olive Oil and salt on and cook short term at broil (15 mins or so on each side).  Seems to work for regular potatoes but I've never tried sweet potato fries so they might have a different trick.

as my people would say tru sie dort karrotten bromigo you will be pleasantly surprised and also regular as all hell the next day so bam another riddle solved by the old swcer tak ethat to the healthy bank down on the brolevard

bowl of oatmeal, thow in a solid dollop of peanut butter and then some strawberries or blackberries on the top. The peanut butter melts in and the berries give it a nice taste. This is always hits the spot for me.

I also like apples and PB

Hope you're eating that "better than peanut butter" stuff... A dollop of PB isn't exactly healthy.

Great thread. :blackdot:

Something I've been doing regardless of the food is measuring out a certain amount and putting it in a dish, then only eating that amount. I used to be a big "eat the whole bag before realizing" or eat the whole jar or whatever type of person, but I've started to fight that.

Those smokehouse flavored almonds are my go to.

I'm sure loaded with salt, but you could do a lot worse for something that tastes so good.  Very low carb, and if you aren't watching your BP you shouldn't have too much issue with the salt.

The BBQ flavored ones are phenomenal.

If you want chips instead of fries, this thing actually works. It's a way to make decently crispy chips in the microwave with no oil.

If you don't care about crispiness, it's more convenient just to steam a bunch of potatoes ahead of time and then keep them in the refrigerator -- ready to eat whenever you want them. (Or if you want to wait and cook the potatoes when you're about to eat them, this thing also actually works.)

(Speaking of potatoes, this guy is eating nothing but potatoes for a full year. He's currently down 54 pounds on day 81.)

I like the Hormel turkey pepperoni. Like with jerky you gotta watch the sodium, but it's great bang for the buck in terms of being filling for the calories. It's something like 80 calories for 17 slices.

Almonds, cashews, dried fruit (making sure it's no added sugar) also work for me. Pretty much that entire aisle at Trader Joe's.

I'm not a big fan of yogurt but the Chobani Coconut is really good. I add a tsp of flaxseed to it.

Slice up some red and green peppers.

Pineapples are a nice change of pace. A good slicer makes it easy to cut up.

Mandarins are awesome.

My wife cooks some pasta and mixes it with cottage cheese the next morning to bring to work. Not my thing.

I really need to start doing more with avocados and look into some dried fruit.

I am a huge fan of fresh fruit and it solves several problems.

1. It does fill you up when you need a snack. You might need 2 servings instead of 1 small apple or banana, sometimes I might eat 2 of them, you can't stop me.

2. Fruits puts and end to sugar cravings after you start eating it regularly. You just don't have these sugar cravings at night and this is coming from a nightly bowl participant.

3. It has fiber in it and that counters the sugar. Anyone who tells you to watch your intake of fruit...unless you are eating something like 15-20 servings of fruit of day which I find hard to believe most folks would do, you're in no real danger of packing on weight from oranges and grapes.

-Right now strawberries are in season, Plant City, FL and the surrounding area has some of the best. I like to pop some berries or orange slices into my salads as well. You can't eat enough fruit when you are overweight and trying to drop pounds. I don't know anyone who gains weight loading up on fruit. If 500-750 calories a day are coming from fresh fruit, you are ahead of the game big time.
