heavy wind/snow games...implications for PIT/CLE thurs (1 Viewer)

we should do a mini-thread jack and predict stats for the game :confused:

I'll go with holmes 6-40 1 TD

wallace 3-18

ben 12-17 1 td 98 yards

quinn 5-18 0 td 2 int 74 yards

anyhow thanks for the heads up as it renders my picking up of wallace moot.

I never did like Cleveland. Been a long time since I've been there, but 25 years ago it looked like a rusty toilet bowl. Old rusty abandoned steel mills and factories all over the place. Now I like Cleveland even less.
:lmao: WTF does this have to do with wind/snow?

Just another reason to not like Cleveland. Wind snow, and now having to bench Rothlisberger. I hate Cleveland. Want to make something of it? :popcorn: ;)

Cleveland Browns to be shorthanded again on defense

Cleveland.com

BEREA -- The Browns have ruled out defensive end Kenyon Coleman for tomorrow's game against Pittsburgh. Coleman missed Sunday's game against San Diego after suffering a knee injury the week before in Cincinnati.

Coleman's immediate replacement, C.J. Mosley, was placed on injured reserve earlier in the week with a broken ankle.

The Browns may have to start the Pittsburgh game with a front three of Robaire Smith at left end, Ahtyba Rubin at nose tackle and Corey Williams at right end. The only other available lineman are Brian Schaefering, who was activated from the practice squad last week, and Derreck Robinson, who was signed this week and hasn't played since the 2007 season with Miami.

The Browns' injury report listed the following players questionable: guard Rex Hadnot, fullback Lawrence Vickers, linebacker Kamerion Wimbley and cornerback Eric Wright.

Also, the team downgraded some players to probable. They were: running back Jerome Harrison (illness), special teamer/linebacker Blake Costanzo (shoulder), running back Chris Jennings (shoulder), receiver Brian Robiskie (toe) and defensive end Robaire Smith (shoulder).

Not a chance. The Steelers don't have a single DB that can catch a pass.

Well, the Browns don't have a WR that can catch one either, so...

LOL okay, they'll both be caught by D-linemen off of tipped throws :lmao: -QG

The NFL has three teams in Florida, The Chargers and Raiders in Cal, 5-6 domes, why are the scheduling games in Pitt or Cleveland on Thurdays nights in December?

:lmao: The game sounded so much more interesting when I purchased the tickets in Sept. :kicksrock:

I don't know, to make money? It's pretty awesome to sit on a comfortable couch and watch football in poopey conditions.Though it's not much fun from a fantasy perspective. (I have ben frothyburger and may have to bench him for garrard)

That is true in a way. I somehow take pleasure watching a game in horrible conditions while I am sitting by a fire in flannell jammies with a cold beer.

Bingo. I think these are very solid calls. I wouldn't bet against you on this.

Not to mention 2 teams in Texas and one in AZ. IT may not always be balmy in those places, but there's minimal chance of blizzard conditions there.

Unless it's Thanksgiving in Dallas...Lett it be, Leon!

As someone who starts Big Ben and S. Holmes every week in my big money league...........this is very troubling (Holmes is finally hot and with Ward out.......damn it!). I'm going to end up tuning in for pregame to check on the winds before making any decisions.
I've got Ben/Holmes too. But I could start McNabb instead of Ben. And Witten or Jennings instead of Holmes. I think I may play it safe. Unless someone tells me the weather is bad for those games too.

Heh, I always root for there to be MORE games like this - mainly cuz they are entertaining from my nice cozy couch. I will say though, that having attended a Bengals-49ers game in the 'nati back in '03 where there was light snow it added a lot to the effect and made it more fun (though the 3 inches of ice cold slush my feet soaked in for the whole game was far from pleasant).-QG

Total toss-up for me. Have Miller in a PPR, and with Ward out and the CLE front defensive line ailing, I can see Miller having a great day catching dumps over the middle or short screens in the flat.

I also think that the threat of high winds is sometimes something that gets overhyped, and come gametime, those projected 30-40 mph winds are more like 15-20 mph.

In a must win game, i have Fred Davis lined up to go vs OAK. But my gut seems to think that Miller actually can benefit from both the sub-par conditions and the short pass game vs a hapless Browns team.

mmmm :lmao:

Here's some hope for Browns fans: Only four times has the low for the day of a Steelers game in Cleveland dropped below 25 degrees, and the Browns won each time:

* 14 degrees, 12/18/83, Browns win, 30-17

* 23 degrees, 12/12/54, Browns win, 42-7

* 24 degrees, 11/10/57, Browns win, 24-0

* 24 degrees, 11/20/55, Browns win, 41-14

i watched a couple jerome harrison clips and he looks GOOD.

Any browns fans care to make an educated guess regarding how many touches he'll see?

We had some extermely high winds yesterday in Pittsburgh but they have died down quite a bit this morning (still having gusts of 30 mph though). Since we're east of Cleveland I expect the winds have died down there as well and while the forecast still calls for winds of 25 mph I bet it won't be much of a factor in the game.The Steelers OC Bruce Arians is in love with the passing game and I doubt he'll be able to resist throwng the ball. One other thing: Ward did practice a bit yesterday and will be a GTD. I bet he sits out because of the short week and the cold weather but I just wanted to point out he has not been officially ruled out.

Winds in metro detroirt have been whipping badly for the past day and a half. clevelands to the east about 3 hours and I imgaine this game is going to have wind impact the kicking and passing games.

Game Forecast-30MPH and wind direction look very bad.

Spectator Index

(1)

The Spectator Index helps give you an idea of how comfortable you'll feel while watching the game, or tailgating beforehand.

A variety of weather factors are used to calculate the index, including; temperature, probability of precipitation, humidity, wind speed, and cloud cover. The best index values result from 'short-sleeve' temperatures, minimal chances of precipitation, low humidity, light winds, and fair skies. Conversely, cold and stormy conditions will result in the lower values. The index is updated several times a day.

The scale for our Spectator Index is:

Excellent (10)

Very Good (9, 8)

Good (7, 6)

Fair (5, 4)

Poor (3, 2)

Very Poor (1)

Personally, I love watching games played in conditions like this and IMO it makes this game a lot more compelling to watch. I know I'm of the minority but I'd love to see the Super Bowl played in weather like this - I think it adds another level of coaching strategy to the equation.

I am sitting Harrison, however, given the options I have. I do think Big Ben has a big enough arm to cut through the wind (at least on short to intermediate routes), and it wouldn't surprise me if he posted decent numbers particularly if he had Ward to go to over the middle. His WRs will have a bit of an advantage in this footing.

I am debating between him and Ganther.
Me too. It's a PPR league so I am leaning toward Harrison. The wind gust info is settling down to 15-25 mph, and I am expecting lots of short passes with Harrison getting most of his points from the catch, not the yards or TDs.Ganther is an excellent match up against OAK, but he likely will platoon with Cartwright. Who gets the ball at the goal line is unknown, but I expect that Ganther will get more carries overall.I'm playing the upside of Harrison vs. the unknown of Ganther, how about you?

Throw me in this crowd, I LOVE watching football being played in the snow. Not sure if I'd like it in person though. I live in Atlanta, it is VERY uncommon for us to get this kind of weather, the last time was in 1993 when we had a true blizzard.

Snow isn't a big deal if it isn't real cold and windy. Chicago has had awful games where punts go up and actually go backwards. Cleveland is close to the lake too and this looks like an awful game with the wind coming from the side.This could be an awful game for passing and special teams.

I have been going to home Steelers games since the late 60s and been to a ton of cold games with snow. I love 'em! The worst games to attend are rain games when the temps are in the 40s and upper 30s.

s been pretty crazy for the last 24 hrs. 20-40 mph winds. power has gone out a couple times. little bit of snow accumulation in the last couple hours.

forecast is calling for a lot more snow and the winds to remain gusty. this game could get pretty crazy.

No idea if it's been said yet but there is no amount of rain or snow or wind that can affect the Cleveland Browns offense. It is a rock under all conditions.

Cleveland tv 5 forecast this a.m. says .... 18 degrees at kickoff/ partly cloudy/ wind chills 10 to minus 5 /

winds out of the west 15-25 MPH
forecast is calling for a lot more snow
Two totally different forecasts. Or is the "lot more snow" during the day ?

Dec 10 Today

Occasional snow showers. Quite windy. High 26F. Winds WSW at 25 to 40 mph. Chance of snow 50%. Snowfall around one inch. Winds could occasionally gust over 50 mph.

Dec 10 Tonight

Windy conditions and snow showers. Low near 20F. Winds WSW at 25 to 35 mph. Chance of snow 50%.

This is from Weather.com for the zipcode of the stadium. Ya'll can look for yourself. Try 44114 - at least that is my office zip code right downtown and a 10 minute walk to the stadium from my office building door. (I think 44113 may be the actual zip code of the stadium, but I digress);

The "alot of snow" will likely be East and SouthEast of the city in the snowbelt. The real issue here will be WIND, not snow although I would expect a dusting in any event. There is a light snow right now, and you can see snow on some rooftops etc., but not enough to impact anything such as driving. I can't imagine the snow will have a large impact on this game but it could be a factor. As I said earlier, this is Cleveland and the weather really can change on a dime. Wait until evening before making any sit/start decisions if you can.

Agreed GB. '94 AFC Champ, unseasonably warm...may have even been in the 50s. Ugh.
