heavy wind/snow games...implications for PIT/CLE thurs (1 Viewer)

Accuweather forecast:

Thursday Night

Low: 19°F RealFeel®: -8°F

Mostly cloudy with a flurry; cold with winds gusting past 40 mph
:goodposting: How do you not strongly consider starting either defense in this weather? It's got turnovers written all over it.

Code:
Hold onto that ball Mendenhall!

from Rachel Nichols twitter page:

"Steelers Santonio Holmes told me he was actually hoping for snow bc he thinks his skill at playing in bad weather gives him more edge on DBs"

I am really torn on what to think about this game. They have to throw at least a little bit. If Hines Ward is out, then I think Santonio will at least put up a decent game. 5-70? If Hines plays, then I have no idea what to do with holmes. Obviously the deep game is going to be next to impossible, but they can't run every single time can they? If I had Ben it would be hard for me to start him, but it all depends on your options. 150yds 2tds? I think that is possible. Not great, but not awful

Agreed that both defenses should be good plays tonight.
On the flip side........if the weather/winds are as bad as predicted........I wouldn't expect to see either QB throwing the ball much which limits the opportunities at sacks & INT's.

Snow has nothing to do with it. It's all about the wind. Right now, the predictions are for wind that will be seriously detrimental to passing.

Wouldn't it increase predictions for Mewelde Moore and Jerome Harrison with short passes? The yardage and TDs may not be there, but in a PPR league I would expect that both of these may be solid RB2's

Man I got Big Ben as my starting QB. My only other option is Hassleback and I hate putting my first playoff game on his shoulders. Vince is on the wire though.

Anyone know where you can see how Big Ben does in bad weather?

He's done fine in rain, snow and cold. He played fine in the cold last season in the playoffs against SD and BAL but I don't recall there being strong winds.I recall a game against the Ravens at home in November 2007 with pretty nasty weather where he threw 5 TDs in the first half. Strong winds and rain but not cold. The only game that I can remember where he had really crazy winds was his first start in 2004 played in Miami during a hurricane. Rained like hell and winds exceeded 50 mph. He was 12/22/163 1 TD, 1 INT. Not sure any of this has any bearing on what he'll do tonight though I really doubt that Arians will grind it out, at least not right away.

I'm torn because the wind looks like it's dying down as the game goes. The link shows 24-27mph winds during game time. Is that wind speed enough to kill passing? What about when they have the wind to their back? A.Smith or B.Ben

For those of you thinking the weather may change for the better as the afternoon progresses...... don't count on it.

Cuyahoga County

This Afternoon: mostly cloudy with scattered snow showers. Snow accumulation less than an inch. Windy and much colder with highs in the lower 20s. Southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Chance of snow 50 percent.

Tonight: mostly cloudy with scattered snow showers. Windy with lows around 14. West winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Chance of snow 50 percent. Friday: mostly cloudy in the morning, then clearing. Brisk with highs in the upper 20s. West winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

Friday Night: partly cloudy in the evening, then becoming mostly cloudy. Windy. Lows in the lower 20s. West winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

the wind speeds aren't expected to change from now through tomorrow night-

I just can't play Holmes with news like this-

Smith has been playing great and Arizona has been tough against the run so I think I would go with Smith. Having said that I don't think the wind is going to be that big of a factor for Ben -- the Steelers are still going to throw.

I think I am leaving Heath Miller in my lineup as it seems the short passing game will need to be relied upon heavily. My other option is Zach Miller who has shown signs of life with a real QB, but I like Heath to find the end zone tonight, especially if Ward is out.

My opponent has Steelers D. I will be happy if they score less than 20 fantasy points as I am fearing the worst as in a shutout and several turnovers by the Browns.

the snow isnt the issue--the o has the advantage in the snow--its the wind. its like that game last year i think the pats were involved when noone could throw anything

The flags on the western shore of Lake Erie (Detroit/Toledo) are in a discernibly turgid state.

Wind is southwest which means it will never truly be at the back of the QB. It's a crosswind which is not good.

turgid [ˈtɜːdʒɪd]adj1. swollen and distended; congested2. (of style or language) pompous and high-flown; bombastic[from Latin turgidus, from turgēre to swell]turgidity , turgidness nturgidly advSo the flags have a little bloating issue ?

People. It isn't like they are going to go out there and down the ball every play. There is a football game to be played here.

Hines Ward (hamstring) indicated that he will try to play against the Browns Thursday night.

"I'm going to give it a shot and see what happens," Ward said. "There is no tomorrow." Expect Ward to test the hamstring before the game. He's not a quality fantasy option playing injured, and he would kill Mike Wallace's value in a game where the elements could be a factor. Wallace owners need to hold off on a decision until close to game time. Dec. 10 - 2:32 pm et

I keep getting burned waiting for Crabtree's breakout. Time to go M-Crab over Sherlock Holmes again, this time with everything on the line.

I debated for a second between using M-Tree over M-Crab there, as tough a decision as my lineup call.

If I think this through objectively, I should bench Holmes, but I sure would enjoy watching him scooting through the snow scoring TDs during a Thursday night game... :lmao:

Am I stupid to even be considering Holmes tonight for DeSean...?
I just pulled Holmes for d jax. They're honestly in the same tier as far as recievers.I'm not worried about jackson's concussion. He's probable and it seems like he'll play. Just try to have a contingency plan in case he's innactive. (I picked up hixon).

Calling All Ben Owners... get up and go outside for a walk, take a few deep breathes and then ask yourself, are you going to sit Ben against Cleveland? These are GUSTS people not constant hurricanes winds. Looks like the winds are going to be slowing a little as the game continues (see forecast)

This is against Cleveland people! There will be opportunities on the field tonight and Pittsburgh will score as many points as they can put up tonight regardless of the score. Ben knows Bad Weather! He will find a way and remember the offense has an advantage because they know where they are going while the defense is reacting and possibly slipping at times. Talent wise this is a no brainer so the only thing Pitt is playing is the weather and while it may limit things it could even help guys like Miller, Holmes on slant patterns and swing passes to Willy/Moore or Mendy. Add the potential for Cleveland to score some points against a seemingly bad Pitt Secondary and I like his chances. Unless you have a real QB with a very good matchup, you should stick with Ben because this is why you have him on your team - for games like this! Man up guys! You don't want to be doing the :wall: tomorrow! Go away from the herd! Go Steelers!

:wall: ESPN was just live from Browns stadium and it was windy, but I didn't think it was that bad. I know no one cares, but I am starting Santonio holmes with 100% confidence.

Yea, I have Manningham. I waffle back and forth as each differing opinion is presented in this thread lol.

Big Ben did throw three scores in particularly nasty conditions (described as "snow, swirling winds, chilly temperatures and a marshy field") in their home loss to Jacksonville back in 2007 (Week 15). Can't speak for just how windy it was, though.

Incidentally, he threw for less than 150 yards. 3 scores will make even a nasty weather day turn into a fantasy bright spot.

I could foresee a scenario where Mendenhall does most of the work between the 20s and Ben throws some short yardage scores to Miller and Spaeth.

Heath Miller is the one receiving option in this game I'd have to seriously question someone benching this week.

I think its relevant to this thread to hear who is playing the guys in this game and for whom. IMO.

I think I'm gonna go with him. My other option is Cutler and he was horrendous against Green Bay earlier. Also Godsbrother said Ben has done fine in conditions before and I was at this game in college: LinkThe winds were howling in that game...it started warm and a front went through early and got COLD. Everyone else was affected in that game except Ben who went for 282 and 2 TD's. Yes, I know its college, but he was making every throw out there. Screw it...gotta go with him.

Thinking Harrison over Beanie/Westbrook? No other viable optionsThinking Holmes over V Jackson for the first time since week 2. I also own Rivers for the "doubler" effect. Most likely, I'll be at my computer pulling hair out right up until kickoff.

Holmes owner.....

I just can't see starting him this week.......too many reasons NOT to start him and very few reasons TO start him....I know they are playing Cleveland and on paper it looked like a great matchup, but that weather is just crazy....I see Pitt dominating this game with defense and running the ball....I don't think they will NEED to throw as I think they win the battle of field position all night (Clev won't be able to move the ball) and pound the running game at CLEV.....once they get a lead they will have very little reason to throw the ball...

If I sit Holmes and he blows up......I can live with that

If I start him and he lays an egg......not sure I could live with that knowing what I knew before the game.......

unless u live in cleveland i think everyone just has to see with there own eyes what the conditions are--there will be a lot of pregame watching--oh thats right i dont get the nfl network. i guess its the old reliable channelsurfing

Does anyone who was considering going with Vince Young over Ben now goes back to Ben in light of VY's injury today?

I think I am. Need to make sure I have a live body in at QB. Big Ben in bad weather is better than VY on the sideline.

weren't there a lot of people afraid of the cold last week with drew brees? how did that work out for ya?
Not cold, 30 mph winds.
it is amazing that people still haven't gotten it yet.
i get it. i just don't necessarily agree. i think you play your best players. my point was, people ran around scared by the weather.
Can you cite some examples of quarterbacks having solid fantasy games when there were 30 mph winds at gametime? (with 40+ mph gusts)

There has not been any Snow or Precip at all today in Cleveland. In fact the sun was out at times. Although its extremely overcast now & snow could be on the way, but if I had to guess, any snow would only hit east of the city. So, field conditions should be absolutely normal (not slick or mushy) for this game.

However, it is extremely windy & quite cold. I think long passing & kicking games will most definitely be affected. But, as long as the snow continues to stay away the running games & short passing games for both teams should be fine.

I have no clue at this point. I have no RB's thanks to injuries and we lock rosters for the playoffs so I really need to get points from my QB to have a chance. This is worst case scenario time. OVerall, it's ceratinly giving me pause. I tried to find anything on line on Vince Young but it's all the same story. Contusion from last week got aggrivated, Fisher says he thinks he will be fine and play but Kerry would be ready to go.This is why Thursday football sucks.
