Help make 7/7/07 John Elway Day (1 Viewer)

So, today is John Elway's Birthday! What a perfect day to support the big man himself by helping to get 07/07/07 named John Elway Day!

The origins for this grand plan began with a fellow Denver fan named Matt who emailed the Colorado Homers with a request to drum up support for the seventh day of Juy this year, to be named JOHN ELWAY DAY (7/7/07). With this being the only time it will happen in our lifetimes (and Elway's), why miss the opportunity to spend a full day basking in the undying glory that is 'The Duke'?

Many of us have enjoyed what Elway and the Broncos have done for us over the years, now here's a chance for US TO DO SOMETHING FOR HIM!

I'm going to offer you several ways of assisting in making this thing happen for Matt and the rest of us. Below are some people and media that you can contact to ask them to either support the naming of this day or cover the story of the fans working to make this happen!

1. Contact the Mayor of Denver (John W. Hickenlooper): Phone: 3-1-1 or 720.865.9000, Fax: 720.865.8787, E-mail: MileHighMayor@ci.denver.co.us

2. Contact the Governer of Colorado (Bill Ritter): Phone: (303) 866-2471, Fax: (303) 866-2003, Email: Governor.ritter@state.co.us

3. Contact CBS4 (and ask them to cover the story): Contact Form: http://cbs4denver.com/contact

4. Contact ABC7 (and ask them to cover the story): Phone: (303) 832-7777

5. Contact NBC9 (and ask them to cover the story): Email: kusa@9news.com, Phone: 303.871.1799

6. Contact the Denver Post: Phone: (303) 954-1201, Email Letter to the Editor: openforum@denverpost.com

Get busy Broncos Fans!!!

I think we should make 7/8/07 John Elway Day because it is the only time in our lifetime that it will happen. Or the next day...or the next...or.....

Denver Obsession....Im glad you love the broncos but can you please stop posting garbage like this. It really takes away from the board IMO. If you want to discuss the fantasy prospects of Denver players that cool, but can't you piss in another forum.

I'll get right on it. Elway has done so much for mankind that he certainly deserves a day in his honor.

7. Wear giant fake horse teeth to try to win the "Look Like John Elway For a Day" contest.

Try this phone number if the City of Denver doesn't come through for you: (216) 664-2900

It's the office for the Mayor of Cleveland. I'm sure they'll help you out.

In honor of this day, I will take a dump and name it Elway.
Why do you gotta be like that? There are a lot of players I don't like, but you gotta respect guys who accomplish as much as Elway did in his career!

Get a life! There is much worse garbage than this on these message boards. Bark up another tree.

Now that's pretty funny!

Now that is really funny! Reminds me of being in Cleveland on the 20th anniversary of "The Drive"....All decked out in Broncos gear of course!
There is only one true #7 and his initals are Mickey Mantle
I can respect that, but post it on baseballguys.com
As a KC fan, I will take a dump in his honor that day.
Just goes to show you that the collective IQ of all Chief fans is really low! Just trying to get your goat Kevin. Just a joke!

They aren't trying to make it Elway Day because it's the only time it'll happen in our lifetime, they're trying to do it because Elway was #7, and the date will be 07/07/07.Did you really not get that, or were you trying to be funny?

How about because he was incredibly overrated?
:lmao:
  :fishing:
 If he was so great, why did it take a 2,000 yd. RB and repeated salary cap violations to compensate for him?
1986, 1987, and 1989 down?
Thanks moleculo. I was waiting for Despyzer's smart ### comeback before I mentioned those 3 superbowl years where Elway carried the Broncos on his back to the big game with less than superbowl talent around him.

He won 0 superbowl championships in those years because the talent around him was not superbowl caliber. Most average or good quarterbacks would have never made it to the superbowl with that little of talent. It took a Great quarterback like Elway to get the Broncos to the superbowl those 3 years.I dare say that Elway was Underrated!!!

Okay, let's look what Elway had going for him in '86-'89. He had a very good offensive line, a top-notch defense (with Pro-Bowl-quality players like Mark Haynes, Tom Jackson. Rulon Jones, Greg Kragen, Karl Mecklenberg, Dennis Smith, Louis Wright, Tyrone Braxton, Michael Brooks, and Steve Atwater), and strong special teams. He also had the single best home field advantage in professional sports.

The only thing he did not have was excellent WRs and RBs. Even then Sammy Winder played well enough in '86 to make the Pro Bowl and the Three Amigos were all at least above average targets.

The notion that there was no talent on this team and that Elway took a rag-tag bunch of misfits and single-handedly drug them to the Super Bowl is misguided at best and downright delusional at worst. Let's lay this nonsense to rest.

The fact is that Elway took championship teams and guided them to also-ran status with 2 TDs to 6 INTs in those big games. I'd like to re-iterate that Elway never won anything until the Broncos brought in a RB that could take the offense off of Elway's shoulders and the team broke the rules.

OVERRATED.

something tells me you weren't watching the same teams play in the late '80's that I was. I have seen Elway single-handedly win games - playoff games included. He did this consistently throughout his career, from 1984 through 1998. I have yet to see a QB with the ability to snatch victory out of the jaws of defeat with anywhere near the consistency.Yeah, the Defense was good no doubt, but this wasn't the 2000 ravens we are talking about. you named a bunch of guys who made pro-bowls once (Kragen, Brooks), or were on the down side of their career, (Wright, Jackson, Haynes, Jones). The only defensive consistent studs were Mecklenburg, Atwater, and Dennis Smith (By the way - if these guys are so good, why are they never considered HOF mat'l?)

If you want to claim that a QB is overrated because he never won a championship w/o studs surrounding him, then you must toss out Marino, Kelly, and Tarkenton (no championships), Favre, Montana, Manning, Aikman, and Unitas because they had excellent supporting casts.

Tell you what, Despyzer - tell me someone you consider is better, and I'll tell you how you are wrong.

The salary cap violations are well known and serve as an asterick in my mind on the Superbowl victories. The Broncos should have been hit with a greater penalty than they were, for undermining the integrity of the league and the salary cap rules.

I will always remember Elway as the spoiled beatch who refused to sign with the team that drafted him. We should have stuck with June 6, 2006 to celebrate him.

Love Elway, but the best ever #7 was the Mick.....Can't make 7/7/7 Elway day when he wasn't the best ever #7. That would be like trying to make 3/3/3 some other day than Babe Ruth day. Doesn't matter the sport Mantle > Elway

Puhlease!

Or not!

Yeah, cause he's the only one to ever do that! No one is forcing you to work at Jack in the Box if you don't want to. (by the way, you messed up my order last night)

With the excpetion of maybe Marino, nobody makes the argument that those guys willed a bunch of losers to championship games. Only Elway gets that distinction (whether it has any basis in reality or not). THAT's why he is wildly overrated.

In 1986, Denver was 15th in points allowed and 21st in yards allowed. There were only four receivers who registered a catch, and none of them had more than 45. None of the TEs had more than 22 catches. In fact, Denver's leading receiver was Gerald Willhite, a mediocre backup RB with 64 receptions for 529 yards. Denver's leading rusher was Sammy Winder... with 789 yards (at a whopping 3.3 per carry). That was a crappy defense, and outside of Elway, it was a crappy offense. That was also the year of "The Drive", which was the best example of Elway "willing a team to victory". ESPN ranked the 1986 Denver Broncos as the 75th best Superbowl team (out of 80). Just imagine where they'd be without Elway (I'll give you a hint- lower than 75th). The other two SB teams were ranked 58th and 64th, so it's not like they're much better.Another fun little game. Take all of the careers of any offensive player who happened to be on any of the 80's SB teams and see how many pro bowls they made. All of Elway's offensive players, during the course of their ENTIRE CAREERS (not just the SB years), accounted for 4 total pro bowl appearances. Keith Bishop made two pro bowls (1986 and 1987), Steve Watson made the pro bowl once (back in 1981), and Bobby Humphrey made the pro bowl once (1990). Let's put this into perspective, shall we? The 2000 Baltimore Ravens are widely considered the worst offense in Superbowl history. Despite this, that one Ravens team featured almost three times as many players who made at least one pro bowl (eight) than ALL THREE DENVER TEAMS COMBINED (three). Those Ravens made a combined 32 Pro Bowls (and counting) during their careers, compared to the 4 pro bowls that the non-Elway players made. And those Ravens finished 14th in scoring, below every single one of those Denver teams. The only other team that has enjoyed even a comparable level of success with a complete lack of top-shelf offensive talent is the New England Patriots... and the Pats finished 1st, 2nd, and 6th in scoring defense their three SB years.

Elway of the 90s was far better than Elway of the 80s. From 84-88 he did NOT do this consistently

You seem to place a lot of weight on Pro Bowl voting. This makes as much sense as moleculo trying to convince us that Meklenberg, Atwater, and Smith all sucked because they are not in the Hall of Fame.

In retrospect, this part of his history doesn't bother me at all. The draft sucks. Rookies should be able to sign with whatever team they like.
