So, in our new lower level, I'm going to have a room just for games and fun. The dimensions will be 24x12 (actually more like 22' as there will be a bar along one of the walls). I'm trying to decide what exactly I want to put down there and figure I'll take some recommendations here.

Current options in no specific order:

Foosball

Shuffleboard

Pinball Machine

Arcade game

Air hockey table

Dartboard

Poker table

I have a separate room that connects to this that will have a pool table but I'm not looking to really put anything else in that room so I'd like to put whatever else I pick in this room.

Which of these is a must? Which would you avoid? Anything I'm missing? How many total items or what kind of combos of the above would you put together for that size room?

The dartboard is a virtual lock for me. Minimal room except for while playing, something I enjoy, and definitely the least costly. I'd rather not completely break the bank doing this as well, but I'm certainly open and I don't mind "doing it right".

I voted avoid air hockey b/c i assume you're not talking about a full size one. Every "smaller" one I've played on sucks

Shuffleboard is way too messy with the sand. It would be cool to have, but too messy I imagine. I voted dartboard - or even an electronic dartboard.

Pinball is my go to game at the beach all summer. Its fun, quick, and easy. You can play it wasted and even if you are alone. That's a must IMO.

Arcade game with a variety of 80s games (you can get these but not sure what mix)

Ms Pac Man

Frogger

Donkey Kong

Asteroids

Tron

Centipede

Galaga

I'm a huge ping pong guy it really that, pool, shuffleboard, etc would all be awesome.
I plan on having a ping pong table but I was going to put it elsewhere. That just seems like something I'd rather keep outdoors or in an unfinished part of the basement as it would take up a ton of room to play. I'll definitely reconsider in there.

What do you need sand for? Are thinking of bocce ball?
It's silicone beads but it looks and feels like sand (usually called wax or sand). I have no idea how messy it would be, though. There's a bar close by that has one so I might pop in and ask them. I was seriously considering getting one of these.

So something like this?

ETA--Holy cow, pinball machines are $$$$$$. Most are looking to be in the 7-8K range. I think I'll be taking that off the list for now. For that same amount, I can get the dart board, foosball, shuffleboard, and an arcade game with money to spare.

I'm not sure why people think the shuffleboard wax would be messy. Would take little kids intentionally messing and playing with it to make any sort of mess.

I have a very nice full 9' pool table and a dart board and darts is played much more often but takes up a fraction of the room.

Get a good backboard. http://www.dart-stop.com/Backboards-s/1.htm

And a good staple free thin wire bristle board. http://www.dmisports.com/products-page/traditional-dartboards/bandit-staple-free-bristle-dartboard-model-60002/

and a variety of different weight and style of darts. Also have replacement dart parts; flights and shafts handy.

You can fit the playing area into about 6' wide and 12' long or so. Have a place to put drinks and darts like a thin shelf along the wall.

That leaves plenty of room for other stuff in the room. Nice poker tables are great to have, but take up a lot of room when not in use.

Pinball is always great fun but you have to maintain the machine for it to remain fun. Lights go out, sensors fail, the rubber slips off the bumpers, the playing board needs to be cleaned and waxed, the glass needs to be cleaned. I really like the idea of a pinball machine but you need to be aware it needs maintenance. Would be cool to have a couple pinball machines and a multi game arcade machine next to them.

Foosball can also be fun but it also takes up a lot of room, gets people sweaty and also needs maintaining. The players break and the playing surface and balls get dirty and you have to lube the poles.

Air hockey can be fun but it can get old quick and again gets people sweaty, takes up a lot of room and you can't do much of anything but play air hockey with it.

Shuffle board also takes up room but can be put along a wall and out of the way to some extent. The sand(or whatever) does get on people's hands and scattered about.

Have you considered Brunswick Billiards version of an indoor putting green? Top of the line model: http://www.brunswickbilliards.com/game-tables/the-mackenzie

Lower level..you mean your basement?

I would go for shuffleboard..fun game and is great for drinking with friends and relaxing. Also a pinball would not be bad because you can play that by yourself. I had an air hockey game but was so burned out on it we gave it away.

I've got to be honest I wouldn't put any of these things in

You'll never use them enough to justify the cost.... you think you will... everyone thinks they will

but in reality they are all cool for about a year or so and then they just collect dust.

That's just how these things work.

Take whatever money you're going to dump on this and either just go on a nice vacation you'll definitely enjoy, or better yet invest in and retire a month early.

But if you must, put in the dart board because those can be had cheap and move on.... but no one is going to play you.

I don't think Foosball takes up that much room at all. And the maintenance on my table is minimal. Lubricate the rods maybe a couple times a year, and that takes all of about two minutes. I've never had a player break and wonder how that could even happen in normal game play.

Depends on whether he has kids and how often he entertains. Our ping pong table and foosball table get used quite a bit. Our non-full size air hockey table is pretty much a waste of space, though.

Ah, OK, cool. A completely empty room and some extra cash in my pocket is definitely preferable.

I must say, though, this response from you certainly surprised me.

My basement is finished and a similar size. I have nothing in it but have thought of buying many of the things you mention. I have the dart board. I like darts, no one plays. No one plays anything.

How about a nice home gym in your basement? If you workout you would use it much more than any of those games.

Maybe when you retire, amirite?

poker table is a room killer. People complaining about no one to play you for darts and fosball, now get 5-8 buddies for poker night. Table will be a clothes rack after the first night.
