Hey Pittsburgh Locals... (1 Viewer)

What's the buzz in the area about the QB situation right now? Last I heard Leftwich was going to start, but personally I love what Dixon brings to the table and think it's a mistake not to be putting him out there. Have there been any changes to this situation, or does it still look like Leftwich is keyed in to start?

Well I go to school in Pittsburgh and the general consensus from the steeler fans here is that Leftwich is pretty much completely immobile and people generally do want dixon to get the start, he played pretty well against the Ravens last year but the feeling is that Tomlin is going to stick with Leftwich...at least thats what the local media keeps saying... :P

Dixon is supposed to get some reps with the first string offense this week against Denver but I expect that might be in the 3rd quarter, after Ben and Lefty get their shot. While Dixon has looked great in the preseason it has come against Detroit's and New York's second stringers which is a whole lot different than playing in a real game vs starters that have been game planning all week. The Steelers coaching staff love Dixon's mobility but he has zero experience reading a defense and tends to take off and run rather than go through his progressions. Leftwich is immobile but has the experience and played well for the Steelers when called upon in 2008.The most likely scenario is that Leftwich starts the season but Dixon is brought for a series or two each game just to keep the opposing defense guessing. Of course all of this goes out the window when Roethlisberger returns.ETA: Dixon played well in the 1st half of the Ravens game last season but his passing stats were horrible in the 2nd half and in OT he threw a bad interception that cost them the game. Not bad a first start but I wouldn't call it good either.

Leftwich will start game 1. He will have a short leesh though. Dixon may be used in special packages. If Leftwich starts losing games for them, they will go to Dixon. Leftwich is going to be in there to "manage" the game and not loose it. Ben returns, it's his team. Any garbage you here of "what if the Steelers start 4-0"?......it's still Ben's team.

Herm Edwards has stated that he believes Dixon should be the starter.

This makes me think that Leftwich should be starting...

One piece of speculation I've heard is that if Pouncey wins the starting center job that they wouldn't want an inexperienced QB like Dixon behind a rookie center. I'm not sure how valid that is since a suspect line should favor a more mobile QB but I every bit of speculation I've heard here says Leftwich is going to start.

Pouncey is a HUGE upgrade over Justin Hartwig so I am not sure how that would negatively affect either QB.

Stay away from both, because sure, Dixon might pass up Leftwitch at some point, but after 4 games they are both sitting down. Dixon would have better long range value if you're in a dynasty league. Some hope he gets a shot and steelers trade him a la Matt Schaub or Matt Cassel, and get a nice draft pick back.

But for the first game, at least, unless he gets hurt, Leftwitch is the starter. He hasnt done anything really that bad so far, and last week he became the first guy NOT to underthrow Mike Wallace.

Pouncey is running with the #1s at center now.

Hopefully Pouncey starting at center, and Adams at right tackle will keep defenders from jail-breaking into the backfield like they have for much of the last few years. Otherwise, I don't see Leftwich lasting too long under center. Dixon starting may be a given sooner than later given the likelyhood of Lefty getting nicked up.

He pretty much already won it

Thanks for all the input guys, gotta say I hate being on the same side as Herm Edwards on this one haha. It'll be interesting to see how the first 4-6 games play out, wish you guys the best!

Byron Leftwich - QB - Steelers

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette still expects Byron Leftwich to be the Steelers' starting quarterback in Week 1.

Dennis Dixon will play with the first-team offense after Ben Roethlisberger on Sunday night, but coach Mike Tomlin has been leaning toward Leftwich since April. We still wouldn't rule out a switch to Dixon if he continues to outplay Leftwich in the third preseason game. Dixon gets a tough test against the Broncos' starting secondary on Sunday Night Football.

I'm not a local, just an avid and (I believe) astute observer. It's pretty obvious to me that Dixon should be the starter. He's much tougher to gameplan for than "feet stuck-in-mud" Leftwich. The coaching staff is playing it coy, but I'm pretty sure they understand this. Dixon will be starting no later than Week 2, but I still think Opening Day.

What I've heard on this is that Leftwich will still likely be the starter but that Dixon (considering how well he has played) will be used in certain packages, in short yardage and goal line situations. Should be interesting to see how it plays out, but I doubt Tomlin will even officially name a starter before opening day. No point to really.

You're the Herm Edwards of the Shark Pool.
