Hit on McGahee... Illegal? (1 Viewer)

Sometimes I wonder how many people in here actually PLAYED the game of football. I mean, we want our guys to tackle by wrapping their arms around the runner. We want them to be somewhat aggressive (hurrying/running) towards this tackle.

The basic shape of the human body coupled with very simple physics and body kinetics then dictates that the head/helmet area will almost always be among the first parts to make contact (unless said player misses entirely!)

Why then are we in so much shock when plays like this happen? Should he turn his body entirely and lead with the back of his shoulder (as many DB's do when tackling a bigger back?) Ask Quentin Demps of Philadelphia how well that technique worked for him when trying to tackle Tim Hightower down near the goal line....a third down TD play that was pivotal in the Cardinals victory!

We should (and do) discourage players from intentionally driving the top of their helmet into other players, especially at/near their helmets, but we cannot stop helmet to helmet contact entirely without literraly ruining the game because to do so would make the best and surest forms of tackling illegal. "Wrapping up" would become a thing of the past. Instead of occassional concussions, we'd have a plethora of serious knee/ankle injuries as defenders would be forced to take runners out lower.

The hit was clean. It was unintended to cause injury. It was in fact, a fairly good example of proper technique. The NFL agrees. End of story.

The reason this issue cannot be discussed in and of itself is because that wasn't the motivation behind it. If McGahee doesn't fumble and the ball recovered by Pgh (game essentially over), no one is discussing the "legality" of the hit. As far as I know, McGahee has not filed assault charges. Why not? All he got was his bell rung in a collision sport.

No one wants to see players kneeling in prayer (though it is heartening that they do, particularly when it is BOTH teams in a nonpartisan manner), but there are Steeler-haters who knew the outcome was determined when Clark leveled Willis who then lost the pigskin, enabling Pgh to run out the clock.
Actually, my initiation of the thread had nothing to do with the outcome of the game. In fact, as I said in the original post, I didn't want this to be about whether the hit had an impact on the outcome of the game or not. Personally, I don't think 9 points with 3 and a half minutes is an insurmountable lead at all. The Ravens could easily have made a defensive play, like the Steelers had done a couple drives earlier with the Polamalu INT TD. They didn't, but even after the Steelers drive ended they had nearly 2 minutes left, and a chance to score a TD and a FG, had things bounced their way.So no, I don't think the hit on Willis is what sealed the game, and no, that's not at all what this thread was intended to be about.

Good God why is this thread still going.
Because there are moronic agendas that "need" to be expressed...Honestly though, the whining is really grating on me...
If the shoe was on the other foot though this thread would be 15 pages long already.
You contribute (and I use that word extremely loosely) more posts to a Steeler related thread than most Steelers fans.
You just added a lot to the conversation thanks. :hot:

He led with his shoulder. The helmet contact happened because McGahee lowered his head (understandably) in preparation for the hit. I know opinions all over the map on this one, but I have seen the replay numerous times and am still convinced that, while brutal, it was relatively clean.
THIS! :hot: It's football. Guys get hit. It was clean--not even close.

Thanks for the clarification on the intent of the thread. 'Preciate it.Well then, it was a legal hit, upheld by NFL authorities who reviewed it. But that's old news.

Pittsburgh will be playing Arizona in a couple of weeks and I don't think it's a stretch to say that the majority of those who thought Clark acted improperly are likely rooting for the Cardinals in the Super Bowl. I wonder how many would admit it.

Clean hit. Not illegal. It's what the majority of fans have said, what the referees have said, what the NFL has said, and what sportscasters around the country have said, among others.

Anyone stating otherwise has no grasp of the rules, or they are merely trolling. Simple as that.

Why not discuss the issue on its own merit rather than simply take the side you feel obligated to as a fan?
Excuse me???Where were you/switz when it really mattered? (oh, and that troll gman74 -haha)

Where was the crying? The gnashing of teeth? The whining then?

Where was the sportsmanship? Where was the unbiased discussion? The outrage? The media?

Where was the ....

Kiss my Steeler grits. :tinfoilhat:
Way to change the subject and prove your bias. For the record, I didn't and still don't care who won the game. Just debating the method of tackling (more ramming of the ball carrier than conventional tackle) and, possibly, a higher incidence of head injury. Not singling out Clark or the Steelers (Although I do think his hit on Welker was late).

I'll even agree the method is widely used and accepted. That doesn't make it immune from discussion as head injury and concussion are serious issues in the NFL today. In this particular case, McGahee had time to transition from receiver to runner. Obviously, this isn't always true and receivers may have little or even no opportunity to protect themselves.

You're indifferent to facts if it goes against your agenda (which is to knock the Steelers any opportunity you get). Everyone on this board knows you're a joke. Keep up the good fight though..........

If you want to see an illeagal hit, just watch Brain Dawkins pretty much anytime he has an open field tackle. I'm shocked he hasn't had more neck problems than he already has.

(52 sec and 1:13)I've seen a lot more during the playoffs and one that got D. Ward fired up, and it was never called.
