Hit on Rodgers dirty? (1 Viewer)

Not the most blatant dirty hit I have ever seen, but it was late, it did involve a wrap up and drive to the ground when the player could have pulled up, and when he definitely knew the ball was gone.  It was meant as typical Minnesota chipiness, but the result was unfortunate.  The hit was meant to intimidate and cause Rodgers pause, not to injure, but it was late.
This.

There is no way anyone can intelligently say that it was not a late hit.  The ball was gone and the defender had time to pull up, which he did not.

Of those with no skin in the game, meaning not Packer or Vikings fans, nearly every talking head said it was clean.

Take it anyway you want.

Can't tackle QB below the waist, or above the shoulders, or when he might not have the ball anymore. Should we really keep pretending or should we just put flags on them and face reality?
Well, it was a perfect fall football day in the upper Midwest and the game was played in a mall, so it kind of all makes sense.

Is that how karma works?
Now I am really freaking out:

Karma, karma, karma, karma, karma chameleon
You come and go, you come and go
Loving would be easy if your colors were like my dreams
Red, gold, and green, red, gold, and green

I'm done now.....

Looked like a legal hit to me.

What was horrible, was that FOX ran the "BREAKING NEWS" ticker across the bottom of all the afternoon games as if the President had been shot. What about all the other players that got hurt today, or this season? Why the special treatment for Rodgers? Seems like something ESPN would do.
Maybe FOX over did it, but I think the answer to this is pretty obvious.

If Lebron James and Enes Kanter got hurt during the same day in the NBA - who would receive more coverage?

Seemed like a typical football play and Rodgers just landed wrong.  The problem is that we get to see the play over and over again in instant replay so it looks worse.  In real time it's a pretty legit hit and exactly what he's suppose to do.

Everyone knows that the goal for a lot of those guys is to hit the QB hard every time (legally) and wear him down.  Sometimes players get hurt.

I think people are confusing  illegal with dirty. Was it an illegal hit? Probably deserved a rough the passer flag,  do I think the guy was trying to hurt Rodgers? No, I don't. I think he was trying to send Rodgers and the Packers the same message all defenders try to send.

That is the same with helmet to helmet hits as well.

If that's a dirty hit, then we have real problems, IMO. Could Barr have eased up on Rodgers as he was going down? Possibly, but this is football. It's a violent game.

In short, it was pretty much a perfect form tackle without the defender being overly aggressive. I don't think there's anything to see here.

Ancient history but THAT was a dirty play!
Oh yeah, very ancient.  I was 3 when that happened but I know many Bear's fans will never forget it.  Bears were favorites to win the Super Bowl again that year.  Just thought I'd remind people what a dirty/illegal hit looks like.

Different topic, but you see this kind of hit/fall mechanism all the time. I believe players could benefit from being coached how to properly fall to the ground to minimize injury risk. The best way is most definitely NOT to extend your arm trying to break your fall like Rodgers did. You're just asking for an injury.

You want your lower body to hit first if at all possible. Ideally, fall on your side with elbows in & tuck your head. Your hip is a large bone with large muscles supporting it. That's the way to go down. I cringe every time I see a player (especially a QB in that situation) extend their arm to try to soften their landing. It's instinct, but this is why I'd make it a teaching point & put some effort into coaching guys how to fall (with whatever resources you can find).

exactly, that play happens all the time in football. Rogers just landed on a bad spot unfortunately

So apparently Anthony Barr and Brett Hundley were teammates at UCLA....

Props to Tate Frazier for introducing this conspiracy theory!

I'm not sure anyone knows what the intent was. Slamming him to the ground after he had let go of the ball is definitely not within the spirit of the game. Deserved a flag, but I find it hard to think that the guy was trying to hurt Rodgers rather than what it likely was, just a hard hit with a signal to the rest of the team that they came to play.

I'm more concerned about the large quantity of Viking fans who cheered at an injury. I don't care who it is, that is despicable

Very typical hit right after a pass is thrown. These guys are bearing down on QB's, ball carriers and WR's at top speed. They can't just hit the breaks in a split second. That was a split second after he released the ball.

If this was Scott Tolzien who broke his collarbone......100% everyone would say clean hit. But it is Rodgers....high profile QB....it's football. This game has tons of injuries every week.

Just put flags on all of them and take away the helmets at this point. I mean every single freaking hard tackle is now scrutinized. This is a violent game.

That is the spirit of defense and hitting QB's. They are taught this at the pee-wee level.

Just watch Friday Night Tykes to see the madness of youth football and players launching themselves with reckless abandon head first into players. It's out of control. But that is a whole other conversation.

Yeah I'd agree. We glorify big hits. Unfortunately it's why a lot of football programs are seeing a decline in numbers. Which leads to combining teams into one varsity team which means a 14 year old getting destroyed by an 18 year old, which perpetuates the problem further.

Yeah.....football is going to die a slow death. But make no mistake....it will die eventually. The health risks are insane. I would never let my son play tackle football (he plays baseball thank god) knowing what we know today. Ever.

I'm asked this question a lot before I had kids. I now have 2 girls. The third one we did not find out and it seems like a boy, so we will see in a couple of months. But if it is a boy, I'd not want him to play football. I played and I suffered at least 2 very minor concussions. I wouldn't want him to be subject to that at all. Not to mention the other serious injuries I've witnessed. I'd likely try to get them involved in something else. I have 2 friends who are crazy about football. Neither of them have graduated from the high school football days if you know what I mean, and each has 1 son... it'll be interesting. Poor kids don't have a chance IMO.

Football isn't going to die.  I can see the game changing (more restrictive protective equipment, rules, etc.), but it's here to stay.

Football will never die.  There are always going to be hard core, alpha males that have no regard for their bodies and love the game.  If the danger of injury should end football then there are a lot of professions that should've died off a long time ago.

I don’t think it was a dirty hit, I definitely think a penalty could have been called, have seen worse not called and less called. But I think of dirty as the intent to cause injury and I didn5 see it that way.

I read somewhere that QBs should get the same treatment as punters. This is getting ridiculous.  Rodgers should have thrown the ball sooner if he wanted to avoid a hit.

I played RB and DB in high school..I got hit in the head one time and had double vision in my right eye.  The coach said only give me plays up the middle so I would only have to look straight ahead. I had a concussion.

During the Cardinals Eagles game a couple weeks ago, they talked about how Carson Palmer worked with a Navy Seal trainer on how to fall to the ground with minimal impact. It was relevant information that day.

Our high school football team ran the wishbone. Our QB got hit on every play. He was the QB from sophomore to senior. He had 4 or 5 diagnosed concussions. That was the 90's so imagine how many he didn't get diagnosed.

I remember after one game, one of our WRs got off the bus back at school and he had no idea where he was or how he got there. We of course joked about it at the time being dumb kids but after we all got dressed and the coaches left he had to drive home. Scary thought if that was my kid.

I hadn't heard that. Great info!
