Home League: 22 years and counting... (1 Viewer)

My home league started in 1991. We've been on going ever since. I've very proud the league has not only stayed together, but progressed through the years.

We started doing scores by hand from the USA Today newspaper. We used Individual Defensive players from day one. I believe we were progressive and ground breaking in that aspect and many more. We created our own fantasy rules from scratch with no reference. 5 of the original 6 owners (yes, we were 6 then. 12, now) are still in the league.

Does anyone else have a similar story to this? How many of you have been in leagues with long tenures?

I didn't create this post to be competitive. I'm just curious.

That is really awesome.

Being in the military, we have been stationed apart and some people have since retired. I started in my original fantasy league in 1997. Started a new league at my next base in 1999 and the core of that group is still together. Two of one owners sons are now in the league with us. We even had a guy pass away...from old age...

we cant say we did the IDP thing that long but we did start in 1991 also

all owners from same high school, we were just starting college that year in 1991

drafting right now, 9 of original 12 still in

That's about the same for us too. The original owners are 39-42ish now.

This is my league's 25th anniversary. Started a year after the '87 strike with 6 owners. Grown to 16, which is fun.

I joined a dynasty league I have since left which was begun in 1988. They were expanding from 8 to 10 teams and I was one of the expansion teams. Being in Denver most people were shocked during the expansion draft when I passed on John Elway to take a youngster by the name of Brett Favre who had just been traded to Green Bay. I looked like a genious, but looking back I was really just taking a stab in the dark.

Like others were saying, we would use USA Today or the next days papers to come up with the score. You had to call your line-up in. The ticker at the bottom of the TV was pure gold. We had a "Supplemental Draft" mid-season rather than a waiver wire. We had PPR from day one. The playing field has certainly been leveled by the internet.

My first draft was 1991. Randall went #1. Ricky Watters went undrafted as a rookie running back. He was the prized pickup as he lit it up for the Niners.

My current league started in Faulk's rookie year (1994). We still have 8 of the 12 originals and same 12 for the past decade.

Back in the early 90's, I remember scoring out of the USA Today on Monday mornings (unless it was Labor Day weekend when we had to wait for Tuesday!), photocopying the weekly results and mailing them to the guys. Yes. mail as in stamps.

We only starting doing IDP this century, but we were early adopters of the auction format (at least 15 years ago).

year 20 for us. been meaning to buy a perpetual plaque or trophy for years now. anybody have a suggestion of one?

starting to get depressing with you think about the leagues outlasting our own lives. also pretty cool though.

Started up in 1988. 12 teams...5 of the original 12 owners still in the league. Rode Randall Cunningham to a title.

I started a fantasy football business in 1993, this is my 20th year and have paid out over $3 million in prizes. Fantasy football, is the best fantasy sport!

Wow great thread. Really cool stories of guys sticking it out for so long. We are entering our 10th year..hope we have another decade in us. Great thing this fantasy football.

Been in my local league with my friends that started in 1990, 12 team league, still going strong today...yes we used to do scoring out of the local newspaper then moved on to USA Today. I miss those early days of fantasy waiting for updates on the TV and calling sportsline for updated scores...

18 years for mine. We also started by checking scores in the USA today. Started with six guys and all those guys are still in the league. 12 teams now. I'll never forget waiting for the Monday paper to see how my team did. Times sure have changed.

Another thing that we used to do was listen for the "ding" on Fox when they showed updates for player stats. We could all be in the kitchen grabbing a beer and hear that ding and go running like crazy to the TV so we could see if they showed any updates for our guys.

Mine is in it's 21st season, started in 93 when I was 13. Me, my brother, 3 of my best friends (then and today) and my step father. It was a 6 man league and has evolved several times with various scoring systems, players controversies, expulsions, changes in commish, rosters, league size and just plan drama. It's survived us going separate ways for college, women and careers.

It's now a 12 man league and has once again gone through some changes this season. The only thing constant in this league is my step father, brother, 3 best friends and myself have been in it from inception to present and will be until death. It's the one thing we are all sure to not miss every year and the only time I now see some of my best friends. I look forward to this draft more than anything else. It's better than any holiday, birthday or whatever other celebrations you want to include.

Awesome.Draft day is huge for us too. We usually have a couple guys on the phone because most of us live in Phoenix, but this year everyone committed to coming to Phoenix for the draft. It's going to be great to see everyone again - it's been about 10 years since everyone was in the same room for the draft.

:goodposting: We used to love this too! The only thing better was when my brother lost like 3 weeks in a row when he had "insurmountable" leads going into the Mon Night game. The most memorable was the night my best friend had only Drew Bennett playing was down like 40 points and Bennett posted that ridiculous 200+ yds and 3 TD game. It was hilarious as we were all jumping all over the room as he threw pillows, glasses and maybe even broke a wall that night. :lmao: This is a story well told by my brother during the after party of every year's draft when we all had a few too many.... :banned: . It's also inevitable that at some point during the draft someone will mutter the name Dreeeeew Beeeeennnettt and we will all errupt with laughter. Well at least 6 of us do.

Similar story but the other way. My buddy was up by 2 points against me going into Monday night's game. I had no one left and he had Favre. Favre ended up scoring -4 because he threw like four picks or something that game. He is still complaining about that one.

This is year 21 for my league. Started it because I read an article in a Beckett football card pricing magazine...

I entered a league in 1990, so it has been 22 years for me, but the league was already around for about 5-6 years. League has two divisions of 10-12 teams and we have kept about a dozen of the guys from the early days. I fondly remember buying the USA Today since it was the only place to get IDP stats. I'd grab the paper and thrown everything but the sports section straight into the garbage can. These were the good ole days when we had to drive to the commissioners house and drop off our weekly lineup in his mail box. We still have one crazy hold out who whines that he can't just drop it off, since we make him email it in now.

Good times!

Started around a similar time. Still remember having to explain what fantasy football was to people. A lot. Like a whole different planet now. :nerd:

The :28 and :58 ESPN updates.

I joined a league with my dad's buddies in high school. It's been basically the same 8/10 guys for many years. Even though I don't live in their city anymore, I always call in to the live draft at the pizza parlor.

It's a TD only league - points for kickers are so important it actually makes sense to take Janikowski in the 5th round. Best part - it's still hand graded and sent out every week (finally sent by email only a few years ago) :football:

I have a friend who's dad started up a league a very long time ago similar to you. They have a trophy and engrave the winners name in it each year and other cool stuff. All done as an in person draft. They are still a little stuck in the stone age on scoring though, they roll TD only.

Year 18 or so for us. 6 of the original 8 are still in the league. Grown to 12 teams. For more than a few years we had odd number of teams. We were PPR from the beginning and have never really changed our scoring system except to lower the kickers scoring. We have survived fist fights, cheating scandals, and trades being over ruled, which still nearly cause fist fights 12 plus years later. Really not a best friends league, more of a I hate you so much I want to beat your ### every year kind of league. I was commissioner for about 8 years there in the ninetys and early 2000's after the original commissioner went to jail for bank robbery. Still remember getting up at like 5 A.M., cracking open the Denver Post and scoring every game by hand. Thank god for the internet! All in all it has been a pretty entertaining run.

This thread rules.

I'm fairly new in the fantasy football world (oldest league is about a decade out) but I recall paying something like 80 bucks to field a fantasy baseball team with my dad on prodigy (precursor to AOL and the Internet as a whole) back in 89... Been playin FBB ( and over the last 10 yrs, FFL) w my old man ever since. The one league I'm In with him also involves my little brother (18hr drive away) and we conference call while we all draft via yahoo with a bunch of cousins/uncles. It's my only non money league but I enjoy that draft more than most.

Nice job stealing fanballs logo lol

Have a work league since 2006, Alot of young guys anywhere from a 12-16 team league, about 8 core players that i think will be there for the next 20 years. Looking forward to the next many years.

I have to look at the trophy at home - it's etiher 1993 or 94. With 8 of us out of Fatansy Football Index. I remember typing up the rules and handing them out in binders  People would have to call in the lineups, the fox ding ticker sound :lmao: , Philadelphia daily news was our "official newpaper".

I took a small fee to buy envelopes and stamps and printer paper to print out standings etc to mail to everyone. I remember and old software program that you could use. I paid one year for the stats to download, after that I would just manually enter them but it would track stats etc.

Trying to guess the next big free agent. Watching Ben Coates go nuts after trading for him, Steve Young sitting week 17 our first year :( - yes we switched to week 16 the 2ns year  It's the draft I look forward too most. The only time I can reall get to see everyone anymore.

Year 2 we expanded. I think we have 9 or 10 (out of 12) originals in the league. It's definitely my favorite. The scoring really hasn't change much over the years, a couple tweaks but overall it's been pretty much the same.

my 16 team dynasty league started in 90 and I joined in 98. It was based out of a production plant we all worked in. IDP from day one. commish used to walk around the plant and pass out lineup cards for us to fill out. was nothing like having to wait until his official game result sheet came out on Tuesday to see if you won or not. We've had several owners come and go but still the same core teams.

Started in 94...we'd go to the bar with rosters either written on napkin or piece of paper and tally up throughout the day. Nothing official until USAtoday on monday. Then the commish would do a little write up with the results and official scoring and his mom would bring it in the office and fax it to the other 11 owners. Funny stuff calling my buddy's mom at work when the fax didn't come through correctly asking her to resend.

League has evolved over the years and 9 of the 12 teams that started are still in it. Looking forward to our draft at AC next Friday!!

Some other postings bring back the memories. As Commissioner I personally liked the "if you don't call me by kickoff of the 11 o'clock game you will have the same lineup you started last week" rule. Pre cell phone, caller id, and call waiting it could be an adventure. If I had a dime for every time I said "If you can't reach me be sure to call your opponent. I have a message machine (with a wee little cassette!) that will tell me the time you called, if you can't reach me or your opponent leave a message. Calls at 10:55 are pushing it, I might be on the line with someone else!" I'd be rich.

haha...calling in add/drops on the commish's answering machine...good times. A little bit easier these days.

We're not in this (^^) deep, but I've been in the league I'm in now going on 11 years. I'm 22 years old. (do the math) LOLI won my league in 01' 03 and 04, playing against a bunch of bookies. I remember scoring points on paper before I joined this league, for my dad and uncle (who are in my league now) I believe we have about 7 or 8 owners we've had since the beginning still, not too bad I need 2 more championships to take the league! I finally got my rebuild on!

I remember using the "Slip the paper under my door" method for people wanting to make pick-ups if I was away at class :)

Berman was less annoying then. Probably because Primetime was just HUGE in finding out how your team was doing. You lived and died with those highlights - any unaccounted for touchdowns you had to wait for the next day's USA Today. Still remember the time I was down 13 points and needed 3 Rod Bernstine (!) touchdowns to win and ESPN not showing any of the scores. Looked in the paper the next day and he got all 3 :pickle:

18 for myself as well.I too remember having to get the Monday USA Today to figure scores.(....and had to leave line-up on commish answering machine on Friday night)

First draft for us was 1983. We had six people and played in a TD only league with bonus points over 100 yards rush/rec. Results were read from the Sunday/Monday paper, hand written and mailed out. If we were lucky, we would receive the points and standing by Friday or Saturday. Lineups were called in on Saturday night or Sunday morning. We are up to 10-teams now and still have 4 of the original owners. We meet in vegas now for a cabana draft.

I founded my primary league in 1993 and I can remember hand scoring the results on Monday and Tuesday from the newspaper box scores. The initial format was TD scoring only with bonuses at 100 yards for rushing and receiving and for 300 yards passing. Two times in our league history we had teams score 0 points (both times in the 90s) before our scoring was made a little more sophisticated. One of the team owners that scored a 0 is still with us, so it still comes up from time to time.

Great thread! I am the Commissioner of the Quinnipiac Fantasy Football League (QFFL) since 1996 and entering our 17th season! We are all very proud of our league and its roots. We started the league as a diversion from the mundane studies of law school and we have been 14 teams for most of our history. 6 current owners are founding members of the league and the majority of the other teams have been in the league for 10+ years. We too evolved from the days of the USA Today and when I literally would package up our weekly reports on Tuesday and mail everyone the results for the week (no wonder the post office can't make any money anymore). How I love technology! We have always run an Auction, Keeper league with contracts and salary caps and we have had people beg to try to get in when there is an opening which is rare. We have been so successful with our league that it caused me to join with a couple of my law school buddies and start our own fantasy auction site at www.redzonefantasy.com (shameless plug I know)a couple of years ago. It is still evolving but it is free and has a model version available to members of our league A.R.K. format. If interested let me know or just go to the site and you can check our out customized MFL page at http://www23.myfantasyleague.com/2012/home/12636#1. Congrats to all of these storied leagues!

21st year dynasty. 10 teams year 1, expanding to 14 teams in year 2, 5 original. No one has ever won back to back.
