...how did he do it without being able to get on FBG...or virtually any other website without his own computer??

Story here.

Let the "Luck vs. Skill" arguments BEGIN!......again....for the 4,317th time....this season.

"For his unbelievable performance, Harrington won a $3,500 Best Buy gift card, which he's selling to his mother for $2,500 cash. "

Nice to know you can always count on family when times are bad. Also, mom knows vig.

When I heard about this yesterday, I was really happy for him. Now, after reading the story, it's left me with a bit of an uneasy feeling.

Small things can mean a lot and I'm sure this was something 'trivial" that carried him through, as he says. So I'm happy for that. But the rest of it...

I thought it would be like the NCAA tourney and he would be in line for big money that could really help him out but after all that, all he got was $3500 (and his own mom is discount buying that in his time of need?).

Rather than dump on his mom ... after all it is a Best Buy Certificate ... shame on ESPN .... over 3 million players on ESPN ... and the best they can come up with is a $3500.00 Best Buy Certificate !!!

:goodposting: Seriously, that is 1/10th of a penny investment per participant. I'd be very curious what the dollar investment for the 30k contest is per head of paying customers? $2? $2.50?

Agreed. When I saw the article I figured $50,000 - $100,000+. Something that made a difference and brought him out of his tough spot.

In ESPN's defense the game is free.

Was actually checking to see if this guy beat me out in the contest I was in, but that one had a $2000 BB Gift Card as top prize.

They get a ton out of it...at best they sell your email address (though that is frowned upon), and at worst, they sell a banner and a couple of ad spots on the "entry page" for 5k a piece and guarantee the advertisers that over 3 million people will see their ad. Plus, BB probably donates the $3500 card for their cut of the advertising.

It's disingenuous to say 'a homeless man' when it's a 33 yr old who due to medical issues (in this case expensive and debilatating back surgery) had to declare bankruptcy/face eviction. That's fairly common with the medical crisis your GOP leadership seems so happy to prop up as 'the best HC system in the world (if you happen to have your hooks in the profit side-- congress-- lobbyists-- insurance and drug reps/companies etc). It's not like this is Rufus from BUMFIGHTS!

Not to mention that I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often, as almost every public library (often a refuge/near-hostel for the homeless masses) they have free innernets.

Honestly he's not that different from you or I but/for getting injured. Pretty sad. Glad he ####### won.

:lmao:

2x LOL that the picture leading this page is of Tee-Bo

(though in Teebow's defense, he has probably done more to help the homeless/poor -- though motivated through evangelism-- than 99% of the people here, or anywhere for that matter)

wtf that his mom can't give him 1:1 on the transaction fees for the best buy card. Though in this day an age of everyone helping the needy (when they are featured on tv by the news etc) I am sure this guy will ultimately

a. recoup more than 10,000 in cash/donations

b. get offereda free place to live somewhere where they have mad vacancies and want the free ad/goodwill pub.

c. get offered a new job by more than 5 people even though he couldn't get one of the last year or whatever.

Did you even read the article? I just reread your OP. apart from my above pt, you lead with "luck vs skill"? This guy drafter arian foster /AP, and made FA moves for lloyd and teebow. This was skill. Prolly more a testament to how you can own your FFL if you get laid off/made to be homeless as all he had was time to research/play/study etc.

:lightbulb:

Enter wcoff/High stakes FF etc with all money you can get your hands on, get credit for.

Get laid off/stop paying rent/ steal LHUCKS wifi.

Do nothing but FFL.

Win your league because you know what size shoe the 5th DB wears in Carolina, and can sit on news and make moves at will.

I'll wager money if you add up his 'cash/prizes/and opportunities" that this dude ultimately clears 10x more than that dumb lady and her lawyer

Yes, I read the article. First off, the author points out how he (MJD - the author) finished under .500 despite spending "all day with my face buried in NFL news, stats and highlights." - which highlights the very point. The author spends hours a day reading about football - the homeless man only got on computers occasionally having to use "computers at his father's nursing home, his mother's house, and the library. He knocked on neighbors' doors and asked if he could use their computers." The point of the OP is that a man with limited access to information, strongly outperformed countless others who, undoubtedly had access to more and better information (as he likely didn't have a subscription to any pay FF sites either). Thus the "luck vs. skill" argument - or perhaps, if you prefer "information vs. a lack thereof"

Oh, don't get me wrong, I wish they like a $50k prize as well as prizes all the way down to 14th place :D -QG

Information is not always a good thing. Unless you play in paper leagues where they run numbers through numbers, information is only as good as the one interpreting it. Upsets don't occur on paper. Breakouts don't occur on paper. Some attempt to draw skill and luck apart is silly. If the game was luck you would draw players randomly. If the game was skill, why would the games even matter? It takes skill to get lucky. The end.

P.S. $2,500 is better than $0.

True, but $3500>$2500. And $3500 could be a sweet puter for him for next season - and prolly have enough left over for a subscription to FBG.

Idiot. Gift Card could have easily fetched ~$3600 on Ebay. People love overpaying for gift cards there.

Friday December 1, 2006, a homeless man was given $100,000 by a film director. The film director gave him this money as a test to

see how he would spend the money. The homeless man did not know that he was going to receive the money when he first got the $100,000. He was only told that he would be filmed as a documentary as to how a homeless man spends his days. It was about the day and life of a homeless person.

The man first found the briefcase with $100,000 in a garbage bin when he was looking for soda cans. This is how he made his money. The man was clearly broke and when he found the briefcase with the money in it, he could not believe it. He actually cried in shock.

The man first got himself an apartment and then he bought himself a $32,000 truck. He then bought his friends cars by taking them to a car dealership and having them purchase the car that they wanted. He kept on buying more more stuff and then he gave the money away.

Shockingly the film maker also gave him the opportunity to use a financial advisor and counselor for free. The homeless man did not take him up on his offer. He instead spent all of the money on whatever he felt like spending his money on. Surprisingly the homeless man lost everything and he stated that he is back on the streets and homeless again.

The homeless man also stated that when he received the $100,000 he also received a lot of friends. He even got married. Once he lost all of his money, the homeless man claimed that his wife did not want him anymore.

Guy is from Salem, Massachusetts... home of the Salem witch trials. He is probably a warlock... or knows a witch, who can compete with that? It's similar to that voodoo guy from New Orleans. You think Jermichael Finley and Ryan Grant's injuries were an accident?

No, it wasn't. NFL knowledge is not a skill. It doesn't take any skill to know that Arian Foster was considered a mid-round prospect with a ton of upside-- any more than it's a lack of skill that had someone draft St. Finley of Wisconsin and saw him get injured. It certainly wasn't luck that netted him Foster, Lloyd and others. But it's not skill. It's following football, and fantasy football.

This is written like a parable. I'd call it "The dumbest film director in the world."

http://completed.shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw...6.c0.m270.l1313not one example in 200 completed listings of anyone paying more than face value for a Best Buy gift card. He could've probably got more than what he got from his mom, but I doubt he had paypal etc... he got a pretty fair deal, IMO.

That was a great documentary. The scene where he opens the briefcase while sitting in the dumpster was awesome. By the end of it he was saying how that 100k ruined his life.

That's funny. I had the same idea without knowledge of that film. I think it'd be better if they did it more. Everyone would obviously do different things.

Yeah Rapiddraft gave away $100K and it was free as long as you didn't need to make waiver transactions or add/drops after Thursday. Not to mention that at least some weeks you could do a week specific draft for a a shot at $25K overall.
