HOU/BAL game Postponed To Week 10 (1 Viewer)

I'm here in Houston and believe me the storm should be in and out of Houston by Saturday evening. Galveston should get hit pretty hard(nothing new) but Houston should be ok. Worst case 70-80 mph winds. 5-10" of rain. Game should be good to play Saturday.

Weather will not be an issue. Flooding, wind damage and power outages across a braod region may be however.PersonallyI think it is iffy on Monday even though Ike has enountered wind sheer and is now porjected to be cat 2-3 at landfall.Cantore just said it will likely be the most wind damage in HOU since 1983 (Alica I think). Not that anyone knows for sure.
BTW, the '83 storm was cat3 Alicia. At the time I lived north of Houston, 85 miles from the coast. The local airport observed sustained winds of 98 mph.Frankly, like you, I think Monday is iffy as well. The Texas-Arkansas game was rescheduled due to transportation, infrastructure, evacuee issues more than game weather issues, and Austin is 180 miles from the coast. My crew and I have also been out at the airport most of the day receiving medevac'd patients from the Houston and coastal areas, and we expect a (npi) deluge of them and other evacuees all night tonight, tomorrow, and Saturday. If these people are returning to Houston on Sunday and Monday, damaged or not, the traffic will likely be horrendous, making it very difficult at best to get to the game. At any rate, it's gonna be a crazy weekend. I don't foresee much sleep tonight.
Stay safe there GB. This is not looking good for the area in general and hopefully the city and the league does the right thing if the damages are as bad as they appear to be. The early surge is looking quite nasty. A thank you and your crew for the efforts.
Houston is not New Orleans. The storm surge you're seeing on television is a long way from central Houston. The principal danger Houstonians face is high wind knocking down trees and taking out power lines. The odds are slim that they would have to postpone this game beyond Monday night.

All McGahee owners :kicksrock:

One extra day of rest going into this game is just what he needed. And what better stage to show everyone that your knee is healed, against Houston in prime time on Monday night!

Whats the deal with DTV not showing these postponed games? The Miami game on a sat a few years ago wasn't shown and now i hear this game will not be available either. Some stupid NoFunLeague rule no dout.
Direct TV is not showing it?
If the game is not on Sunday DTV will not show it. It may be picked up by another channel (espn2), I am not sure of the legal side of it. I just hope I can see the real Monday night game Dallas/Philly cause I live in Maryland and I know the local channels in Baltimore will play the game Raven game. Dallas fan very worried I may get screwed.I really do not see this game being able to be played in a city that is evacuated and getting ready for a huge Hurricane. I doubt they play this game this weekend at all. I am thinking a bye week for the Raven and Houston.
The TV bobbleheads overhyping the danger. Millions of people are still in Houston going about their lives. Don't worry Cowboy fan, you'll get your game.

Oh, I understand that - Houston area born and raised here. I also remember what Alicia did to the area and can see Ike causing as much or more damage. Times have changed, but I know we lost power for over a week and that was in a populated, inland area. I hope you are correct about the game going on - that would mean good news to the good people who are north of 10.

I remember Alicia well. We lost power in my area (West U) for maybe eight hours at the most.

Signicant power outages and trees down plus possible flooding in low lying areas will be the problem IMO. I hope you are correct about the effects on HOU but I think in 48 hours some people/orginazations are going to look silly for downplaying this. Best of luck to all in the region

Well, I've tried selling my league on the designated substitute plan and am getting nowhere. Everyone keeps saying that if you have Ravens/Texans players that it's no difference than if you were dealing with injured players. I explain to them that this is 'an act of God,' that you shouldn't have to worry about whether a game is played or not. They repeat "same as an injury." I ask them how often a team Def/ST is injured and misses a game, to which I hear a long pause, followed by, "it's like a bye week."

I feel like every owner in my league is riding the short bus and I'm stuck driving it.

RAVENS-TEXANS GAME WILL AIR ON DIRECTV

Posted by Mike Florio on September 12, 2008, 4:32 p.m. EDT

Well, we’re not quite sure why or how it happened, but the good folks at the NFL and ESPN have decided that the Monday night game between the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans will be available to DirecTV customers.

“After taking a closer look at it, we have decided that our Sunday Ticket subscribers will receive Monday night’s telecast of the Baltimore Ravens at Houston Texans game,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told us by e-mail a few moments ago.

The game won’t be available via DirecTV in Baltimore or Houston, but it wouldn’t be available via DirecTV in those cities if they played the game on Sunday.

Kudos to the league and ESPN for doing the right thing.

That's assuming we have power to host the game. If we get winds in the 75-100 mph range then we may not have power for a LONG time. I understand Alicia was also a powerful storm, but that come over 20 years ago. There are a lot more people in the city now..which means more development and more stuff to fly around and cause damage "assuming we only get heavy winds".I really hope you are right though....

Per the Weather Channel, Houstan area power(Energy... something I think) says as many as 1,000,000 could be without power.

I think you mean Reliant Energy.Hmm, I wonder if Reliant Energy will be able to restore power to Reliant Stadium in time for a nationally televised game a whole 48 hours after the storm has passed? I'm thinking yes.

I wouldn't invest too much in what you're hearing on TV considering CNN's inaccurate "BREAKING NEWS: FLEE OR FACE CERTAIN DEATH" banner.

:bs: To me this is the worst part about facing a big storm.

I think the tv networks I have been watching (and the weather channel in particular) have been doing a great job conveying good directions about necessary evacuations and reasonable precautions. The problem is you have a segment of the population that is composed of idiots who think they can and should "run out the storm" when they live on barrier island. Just think how many people would have been saved if people heeded the warnings in advance of Hurricane Katrina.

On the local news (NBC here), they just reported that is may take 2-3 weeks to get everyone power again, according to the estimate from the local power company. I have no idea if that means homes, businesses, etc. My guess is that efforts would be concentrated on getting families and businesses their power back before a football game though....

Hopefully the power will be back soon. Everyone is saying different though....

Edit: 200K without power now.

Sorry if this has already been addressed:

If the damage really is THAT bad, how soon will we know that if the game WILL NOT take place Monday? Saturday P.M.? Sunday A.M.? I ask this for purely shallow, FF-centric reasons, but it seems like a relevant question.

Houston's getting hammered right now - 100 mph winds, extensive damage to buildings downtown, & reports of 4 million people with out power. If it's as bad as it sounds, I'd guess we'll hear something on the game later today.Which of these do you all think is more likely now?1. Move the game somewhere else & still play it Monday2. Postpone it altogether, making week two the bye for both teams.

Unless the city experiences significant flooding for an extended period, I highly doubt the game will be postponed. The storm will be over within the next twelve hours at worst. Although millions are affected and without power, what you're not being told by the national media is the areas that aren't dark. Downtown and the med center have power because those areas are serviced by underground power lines. Reliant Stadium is close to the medical center, so it's doubtful that there's no stadium power. The City of Houston will definitely want this game to be played because the citizens need a diversion, and I doubt Bob McNair will allow the NFL to move it and screw the Texans.

As Commish for our local league, I already sent out an email league-wide telling owners that they will be allowed to submit a conditional lineup, prior to kickoff Sunday, in case Hou/Balt doesn't play this week. I think that is the best way to handle the situation, since this is a rare occurance and the lineups would be submitted prior to kickoff anyway.

Well, I would think the league would put something out either way on Saturday night. They'd have to wait until the storm passes obviously and assess the damage. The league would probably have to consult with city officials to make sure the city is ready to handle game-day traffic.I know the locals are adamant that the game will take place, I remain skeptical. Even if the power is on at the stadium, it doesn't mean that the rest of the infrastructure, (traffic lights, bridges) in the rest of downtown are working. The reports of broken glass from high-rises are also disturbing.

http://www.khou.com/topstories/stories/kho...e.6131e028.html

I could easily see Houston officials saying that bringing 60K people to the stadium on Monday night is not safe.

Seems pretty egomaniacal by everyone involved saying the game WILL be played in Houston. Millions without power, flooded streets, glass and debris everywhere - hey great conditions to host a game if you want nobody to show up or be able to see it on TV locally.

There are still ALOT of people without power in Louisiana from Hurricane Gustov. Since Sept 1.

Ike losing strength, but still a hurricane

Posted: 10:54 AM ET

HOUSTON, Texas (CNN) — Hurricane Ike continues to weaken Saturday as it makes its way across Texas. It remains a Category 1 storm with top wind speed of 80 mph, the National Hurricane Center said in its 10 a.m. CT (11 a.m. ET) advisory.

Ike made landfall at 2:10 a.m. CT (3:10 a.m. ET) as a Category 2 storm with top winds of 110 mph.

It could remain a hurricane into Saturday afternoon, the NHC said.
Not sure what exactly this all will mean for monday but this was in an earlier post on the same page:
Harris County/Houston

The brunt of the hurricane’s 90 mph winds are expected to batter Harris County throughout the morning, while tropical storm winds could continue until 4 p.m. (5 p ET). “Residents are strongly urged to shelter in place and wait for conditions to improve,” county officials warned in a statement.

The storm surge in Harris County peaked at 11 to 12 feet and is expected to recede, according to Harris County officials. Flood warnings are in effect for Greens, Clear Creek and Chigger Creek bayous. Houston 911 received 1,250 fire and emergency calls over the past 24 hours — about 60 percent higher than normal.

The Houston Chronicle reports that Reliant Stadium, the home field of the Texans, suffered some damage as a result of Hurricane Ike.

“We lost about five panels from the stadium [roof], and then some doors were blown off,” said Edgar Colon, chairman of the Harris County Sports and Convention Corp.

“We have not been able to give a visual inspection,” Colon said. “This right now is preliminary. We have not done a full inspection.”

The Ravens and Texans are scheduled to play in Reliant Stadium on Monday night.

A buddy of mine in Pearland (southern suburb or houston) had half his shingles blown away and tons of water damage inside.

That's probably typical for a large number of structures in the area.

They should of just moved the game to another field....

Seriously, if Houston is that bad right now... how many ticket holders are going to go?

Just move the game to a near by Stadium that is open and has minual damage.

Couldn't they have played the game Thursday night

The NFL is not going to give the teams less time to prepare for the game on such short notice.

While the NFL and Texans haven't released anything official yet, I would imagine it gets moved to either another day or to another facility for Monday.Sounds inevitable at this point.

Note - there has been NO official word yet. This is just ESPn talking to someone at the company that manages the stadium. But it sounds like it's only a matter of time.

Of course, thoughts and prayers with the affected region.

Technically it's ESPN cribbing from the Houston Chronicle. But that doesn't change the original point. That's why I don't like the use of "postponed" in the ESPN.com highlight.

ESPN is like local news - 'Tonight on Channel 4 news - is schoolwork KILLING your KIDS?'They go for the big headline figuring they can explain it later once you show up.

if they can't play somewhere else on monday night, this seems to be the easiest solution:

move Bengals at Texans from week 10 to week 8

Ravens play at Texans in week 10

Bengals bye week changes from week 8 to week 10

Ravens, Texans, sorry you get a bye in week 2.

I'm here in Houston and believe me the storm should be in and out of Houston by Saturday evening. Galveston should get hit pretty hard(nothing new) but Houston should be ok. Worst case 70-80 mph winds. 5-10" of rain. Game should be good to play Saturday.
Well at least one of your posts was partially accurate. :thumbup:Looting occuring as I post this. A bad deal for all

Yep, better make sure to change out all your hou/balt players.

So is this going to count as the bye week for both of the teams then?

Unless the city experiences significant flooding for an extended period, I highly doubt the game will be postponed. The storm will be over within the next twelve hours at worst. Although millions are affected and without power, what you're not being told by the national media is the areas that aren't dark. Downtown and the med center have power because those areas are serviced by underground power lines. Reliant Stadium is close to the medical center, so it's doubtful that there's no stadium power.

The City of Houston will definitely want this game to be played because the citizens need a diversion, and I doubt Bob McNair will allow the NFL to move it and screw the Texans.
Sorry, but you were wrong on this one. Even underground feeders come from overhead somewhere. There are very few underground transmission (100+ kV) lines. There's too much thermal energy that needs dissipated for them to be underground. If those were damaged, good luck getting those back up in two weeks, let alone two days. Besides, the area you describe is in the vast minority of customers. From what I've seen on DTV channel 361, Houston is no shape to do anything other than clean up and wait for the flood waters to receed.

My thoughts and prayers to those in Texas.

Actually it would not be that hard to reschedule this to another week. HOU has a bye on week 8 as does CIN. BAL has a bye on week 10 and CIN is at HOU on week 10. They could just give HOU and BAL their bye on week 2, schedule CIN @ HOU on week 8, and schedule BAL @ HOU and give CIN a bye on week 10.
Nice job calling this one. Props to you. Did you tell Goodell about this?

I ll wager mext year's FBG subsciption that it is not played Monday if you are that confident
I wouldn't invest too much in what you're hearing on TV considering CNN's inaccurate "BREAKING NEWS: FLEE OR FACE CERTAIN DEATH" banner.
I want to know if Lobary is going to pony up for Broadway Joes FBG subscription..

Yeah I have BAL def in a salary cap league (with $5 transaction fee!) and had the exact same argument/responses. Plus the transaction deadline was 12pm Fri no FA pickup allowed afterwards.. so I went ahead and bit the bullet, spent the $5 and picked up the Giants

Well we have no power in most of Houston and about 2 million with out power but they are working on it now and parts are starting to get power now. Speaking from in the area it's really not as bad and some of the media are making it out to be. People are not raiding and looting maybe a handful at the most but they would be doing it anyway. The pics you guys may have seen of Downtown is probably the worst place hit by the hurricane in Houston. Everything is pretty good with the exception of power but seems like most got though pretty well. (alive atleast.)
