House of the dragon. Game on! (2 Viewers)

I liked it.
My only minor complaints are that the king seems like a weeny and that Matt Smith is almost too famous to be on the show. But otherwise, I'm fully onboard.

Wow, tough crowd  I was late to GoT so wasn't around for the start of its thread, is this how it started too?

Its so funny. They're essentially comparing a 60 minute pilot to a show most of us have dedicated more time to than our own children's homework.
Dude, it's not hard to compare the first episode of 2 series.

Dude, other than one person mentioning wolves, nobody is making any direct comparisons to the first episode.

You guys can get all worked up all you want I’m not stopping you.
The beheading scene was mentioned at least twice. I know I mentioned that I liked the first GOT episode more when I also mentioned my worry about the series being too confined. I enjoyed the episode but it was definitely less epic. Going to be really weird to a degree with no WW threat. I enjoyed all the gamesmanship of the warring houses but there was always the winter is coming/beyond the wall aspect regardless of how they crashed landed that in the last season.

If I were to make a comparison, GOT is basically LOTR or The Hobbit and HotD is LOTR/Hobbit without Sauron/Smaug/Orcs. It can still be solid but it’s a narrower world.

I think it’s a bit early to come away with any conclusions about the scope of the show.

As for the WW, didn’t the the King allude to them.
Eh, I don’t see why not. WWs won’t appear unless they mess with the timeline and there won’t be much to do in the north or north of the wall. The Targaryens rule for another 150+ years so they’d have to get really close to the start of GOT. We won’t see Dothraki or likely anything from that side of the world like Daenerys’ travels.

I think it’s pretty easy to draw conclusions about the scope. Doesn’t mean it will be bad, almost every response was that we liked it but didn’t love it like GOT. I loved the world building and expanse and I think HotD will be constrained in comparison.

Agreed the scope won't be nearly as broad as 8 seasons of GOT in terms of characters, timelines, plotlines, houses, geography, etc. Its only really one book of content rather than (a planned) seven. But its a pretty good story imo and will be cool if they do it right. I've not read this book, but know the story and would say those who believe it is "predictable" based on the first hour should hold on to their hats. I think several of the actors were fantastic. It was an intro episode obviously and things are barely underway, but there wasn't a single wasted line or scene. For me it was a great pilot.

Despite high expectations due to praise here and my IRL network, I was pretty impressed. I'm a sucker for a good villain so they've got that teed up nicely.

Haven't read the book. Assuming there would be a lot of introductions and set up in episode 1. OK with where it's at.
Off the top of head, I can't remember any scene in GoT that made me feel more squeamish than the childbirth scene in episode 1 of this series.

Somebody help here.

What is the relationship between King Viserys and the Queen that never was?

Simple answer only for a simple man.
I've read the lineage a dozen times and can't figure it out.

Anyone else think something was up when was the daughter was going around pouring everyone’s wine and the one guy from Night Court was like, “no thanks, I’m good”?

I thought some poisoning was about to go down.

some good identifying tidbits on House Hightower here (it talks about episode 1 but no spoilers beyond that):

Finally watched it. Pretty good. Not as compelling as the GOT pilot, but I can see this being a good show.

One thing that does have me mad (at the GOT ending) is that it really does appear that the White Walkers are supposed to have been a much bigger story than how GOT treated it in the final season. The whole Prince Who Was Promised and the dragons basically did not matter in the war or final battle with the WW and that feels like a huge miss that will differ greatly in the books/intended story of A Song of Ice and Fire.

Agreed. And I have no idea how a prequel can somewhat fix this, though. It's a shame. They probably just need to stay away from these plot points after how badly they were botched in the last couple of seasons.

And, on that note, the whole Cersei with prophecy thing went completely by the wayside. Would have been cool to see that play out better.

I do wonder if say after 10 years have passed and Martin finishes those two books ( :fishing: ) if HBO will re-cast and show those final books. Could just name each series after each book. This is such a cash cow for them and GoT ending was so poorly conceived and Martin wanted 10 seasons - it’s conceivable.

They could even sell it as this is the ending George Martin wanted.

Wasn't that pretty much fulfilled with all of her children dead?
No. I believe she was supposed to die a certain way, too.
She basically did.
Huh. I guess so.

Just googled it.

After the witch gets a taste of Cersei's blood (literally), she predicts that Cersei would marry a king, become a queen, would have three children who would die before her, and would be taken down by a younger, more beautiful queen

In the books, the prophecy also said that a "younger brother" would kill her by strangulation. But that was left out of the show, either by foresight on how they were going to end the series (lol) or happy coincidence.

I think the passage is "When your tears have drowned you, the valonqar shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you."

So part of that sort of happened in the show - sort of.

NO BOOKS !!!

I thought she was going in to give him a happy ending, but my mind is in the gutter.

Ah, that's what confused me. I always anticipated that it'd be fun twist/irony to have Jamie (I think who came out of the womb second) kill her instead of Tyrion - who Cersei already expected.

I didn't realize that the show left that part of the prophecy out.

I was too busy thinking, "don't they have staff for that?"

I watched the "what better story than the cripple boy" scene today. So cringe.

Ah so that’s why she wanted Tyrion and pancake **** gone.

Yup. I always assumed that Jamie would kill Cersei in the end. Figured it would basically be a repeat of when he killed the Mad King (Cersei getting ready to go scorched earth as Dany took the city....Jamie kills her to stop her)

Probably how it happens in the things that shall not be named.

The good: liked the juxtaposition of dragons flying over kings landing where when we last saw that it was burning it down. Commoners thought it was normal not terrifying. Seeing some of the other houses was also cool.

The bad: the gore was a bit over the top. Seemed like they were trying to shock people for shock value without a purpose at times.

Show has promise but will need to see if the plot line can hold attention and not just going to 11 on dragons and gore every episode.

Look forward to the final episode of the series when three dragon eggs get out into a chest foreshadowing them going to Daenerys.

My only minor complaints are that the king seems like a weeny and that Matt Smith is almost too famous to be on the show. But otherwise, I'm fully onboard.
Never heard of him. Had to look him up.
Same. I knew him from The Crown but didn't know his name. It is a bit distracting but so was Littlefinger in the beginning after his role in The Wire.

Matt Smith can't be any more distracting than having Lena Headey as Cersei, or Sean Bean as Ned Stark. I've never seen Dr. Who but I recognized him from somewhere when Daemon was introduced, but that happens in every show/movie these days.

I only knew Lena Headey from that Terminator show and never saw Sean Bean before GoT. I also never watched Dr. Who but still got a bit distracted at first because of his role in The Crown. I guess it's the hair. lol

some good identifying tidbits on House Hightower here (it talks about episode 1 but no spoilers beyond that):
This won't confuse anyone.

Without spoiling anything, the series’ premiere does a good job of planting the seeds for Alicent’s overall role in the show. While she is currently played by Emily Carey, a mid-season time jump will see Olivia Cooke take over as Alicent. (Similarly, Emma D’Arcy will eventually replace Milly Alcock as Rhaenyra Targaryen.)

Ohhh, I missed that nugget. Must be a time jump?

ETA: Duh, I can't read :lmao:
