House of the dragon. Game on! (2 Viewers)

Team Rhaenyra
For sure. Alicent sucks

The long gap didn't help Alicent's cause in the eyes of viewers. We didn't experience it due to the time jump, but she's been banging this old decrepit dude for over 10 years and kicking out babies out of a sense of duty to family and country. There's some truth to what she said to Rhaenyra about her doing whatever she wants during this time with no worries. And in the climactic scene, her husband the king takes the side of the kids who are obviously not legitimate heirs rather than his own legitimate sons and says its treason to say what everyone knows is true. She obviously overreacted, but its easy to see how pissed off she would be at that whole situation. Hopefully she's at least getting some side action from Cristan.
Based on only what we’ve seen, she’s been behind all of the sowing of the bad seeds. All due to her father making he marry a dude falling apart so she could challenge Rhaenyra’s rule. If her dad didn’t push that, we wouldn’t have a war. Then again, there’s be no show to watch. She’s clearly going against the king and the king made his heir know well before. No sympathy for her from me since she clearly started it. We know it ends badly for all but she got it going.
Sort of. I think more her father than her. He pushed her to become the Kings choice in marriage. Once she delivered boys, she kinda had no choice but to push their claim to the throne. Her father was right that society wouldn’t accept Rhaenyra over Aegon and that Rhaenyra would have no choice but have the boys killed. Unfortunately, that placed them at odds.
There’s a war so we know they would be placed at odds. I’m only saying that Alicent on screen has clearly been a worse person than Rhaenyra. She’s teed up her boys for battle and fed them what their father said to not mention. She also had Rhaenyra’s baby daddy killed. Again, this show is based on a war, so it has to happen but she’s been painted in a much worse light. If there wasn’t a book behind it, she didn’t have to start the fight. The king decided his heir before she was involved.

It’s probably a losing side (Mad King was Targaryen so her brown haired boys don’t have good odds at Caesars), but I’m also team Rhaenyra.

Dameon's daughters and rhaenyra's sons were practically giddy about only having to marry their 2nd cousins. (Especially since everyone basically knows the boys are bastards, meaning they're only related through one side of the family)

Better than most targs get

Anyone else disappointed in the Prince that was Promised story? I recall a few in here thinking we might get a bit more on it based on how important it seemed. To have it end up being a silly means to get Alicent fired up to start a war again really made it all meaningless. I was a bit disappointed that somehow we seemed to get to peace and then it became the way to get the war back on track. Seems like we won’t get any more detail about it.

Viserys hanging on too long (like his grandfather) is kind of the point though right? These questions about succession get harder the longer animosity has to mature on the Green side.

You had to know the peace wasn't gonna last, though, right? It didn't even last through dinner.

I don't think it was meant that way but the more I think about it today, I could see it being construed as a threat. At the end, after the kids are sent to their rooms and Rhaenyra and Alicent are chumming it up, Rhaenyra says I'll run the kids home and return...on dragonback. Insert ominous background music.

Or maybe it was foretelling of her return after they bury the skeleton?

It felt, to me, like they were foreshadowing the nastiness to come when Rhaenyra said she'd come back alone.

What's the team stats on dragons, now? Team Hightower has Aemon and Aegon with their dragons, and Aemon is shaping up to be the big, bad.

Team Rhaenyra has her and Daemon, but do her kids have dragons, too? They had them in the training pits when Aemon got the pig with wings. Did they pair bond, or whatever, with their dragons?

Nice callback in the show, too, when Daemon went and grabbed the three eggs that eventually ended up being Dany's dragons.

Yep, already knew about the war and knew the peace would never last.

We had discussed the whole dagger, prince who was promised and some of us thought they might expound on it. I was disappointed that it was solely used to start the war again so to speak.

Lots of good humor in this one. My favorite line was when Viserys was told Corlys was gravely wounded in the fighting in the Stepstones and he says, "We won that war years ago" and I was like "Yeah, WTF? The Stepstones again?"

Another great moment from Daemon to Corlys brother - "say it"

Has this been confirmed? I thought the same in the moment.

Also, as for callbacks, when do we get to see the old Maester at the wall in GoT who talks about "Aeggy" in what I assume are his old age delusions?

I never even thought about that but yeah, it’s got to take a few years for dragons to get big so these eggs likely have zero to do with this war.

Aemon won’t be seen as far as I can tell. His great great grandfather was just born on the show. Aeggy is his brother, Daenerys’ grand father. If this show is mainly about the war and only 3 (?) seasons, I can’t imagine they get to him in any way.

At the end of Episode 7, I think there were three dragons flying back to King's landing with Team Hightower's ship as it left Driftmark. I assume the third dragon was Helaena. They haven't showed her riding a dragon, but there was a comment in an earlier episode (6?) that Aemond was the only one without a dragon before he claimed Vhaegar. So the Greens have at least 3.

I don't think they've showed any dragon-riding with Rhaenyra's kids nor with Daemon/Laena's kids, but they are Targs and I expect all will be dragon-riders - likely more of that in season 2. Also, Rhaenys is definitely a dragon-rider but its not really clear which team she is on just yet.

One big question for me is what becomes of Laenor's dragon - Seasmoke? Since he's not actually dead, would the dragon follow him wherever he's going or would it be able to bond with a new rider? Kind of a book-geek question but I will be looking to see how they resolve that.

I'm not certain the three eggs Daemon collected at the beginning of this episode are Dany's dragons. Hadn't thought of that but I guess its possible? Those events are still a couple hundred years away. I think he said the three eggs were from Rhaenyra's dragon Syrax. My assumption is that he is saving them for his kids and the kids he has with Rhaenyra.

Ah, good clarification. Way too many Aemons, Aegons, etc.

We're not not going to get that story until Martin finishes writing it. And maybe not even then. I find it more of a "Nans Tale" Maybe something like the Old Testament. Were prophets spring up by the dozens and spread the word on the coming messiah.

Personally I don't think the Prince that was Promised will/should ever be actually named. It will be left to the reader/viewer to decide who they believe in. It should be left as a parallel to modern day religion.

Another solid episode. A lot happens with very little action.

Why does it look like they are referring to Rhaenyra's younger son as the heir to Driftmark? Wouldn't it be the older one?
Looks like eye patch kid is intrigued/impressed with Daemon.
So I guess the girl that Alicent's older kid raped was poisoned and not just given a morning after tea?
Did Alicent's older kid marry his sister? Who was the blond girl sitting next to him that Rhaenyra's son danced with? If it was just some other girl and his wife, where was the sister at the dinner?
Should be interesting if Corlys is still alive. Since they didn't show it, I think he is. His brother has been killed and his daughters have been married off to bastards.
The brother could have stopped with "Bastards" but had to go one step further. Great, unexpected slice!

The older son is heir to the Iron Throne after his mother passes.

Yes, Aegon II married his sister.

Not sure on the poisoning of the girl or whether it was moon tea.

I listen to a podcast about the show and they seemed pretty certain is was moon tea (GoT plan B).

Also, per the same podcast, they believe the show is intentionally making eye patch kid (Aemon?) look like Daemon since they will be the primary battle figures.

Where does the poisoning theory come from. That would make more sense to me, or just have Cristan take care of her, but I didn't catch the suggestion that happened.

It crossed my mind when she handed her the cup, but her line "it's best to be safe" or whatever seemed to clarify it was moon tea. Also, I don't think Alicent is that evil (at least not yet - I'm not a book reader so don't know her arc).

I was thinking "it's better to be safe" to mean get rid of her so she doesn't talk. Also, another girl asked about her and Alicent hugged her without saying anything.

I thought it was moon tea at first. But later a girl walks in and asks Where is "what's her name" ? She's supposed to dress the boys. or something like that. And Alicent has very guilty look on her face and makes some lame excuse.

I took the look as just shame from her son raping the help.

At least she didn't just ignore it, like the window spank.

Guess it gives that earlier interaction more poignancy.

Did the show just completely gloss over his marriage or did I just miss it?

When Alicent woke him up, she said something like, "you bring shame to your wife and the family" That's the only reference I heard to him being married. That's why I was confused at the dinner table scene and when Rhaenyra's son took her to dance, he didn't look happy.

It was mentioned during the funeral last week.

Window spank had me :lmao: for some reason..

There was also a scene where a hooded woman went into the village and met another woman wearing white. Was the woman wearing white Daemon's former whore?
I'll have to rewatch that scene. It went by fast and I didn't really catch what was said.

It was. And the woman speaking to her was the girl asking of the whereabouts of the girl Aegon raped.

That serving girl knows more than just about anyone in Westeros. She's been in the background during key discussions so much its become a running joke on the Ringer podcast. That was an interesting reveal as her information is probably extremely valuable.

They are obviously setting up a matchup between Daemon and Aemond and their respective dragons so I guess they have to make them look somewhat equal but the other three kids look like twerps compared to Aemond.

And Aemond looks much bigger then his older brother now.
Also the younger b a s t a r d has to be insane giggling at Aemond eye across the table. guys twice your size and you just saw him best Ser Criston in the yard. Just asking for a butt kicking. Is that word really xxxx out around her lol.

The ages of the kids/actors are getting a bit confusing. Interesting they just showed Dameon beating Cristan Cole in the training yard and we know Cole beat Daemon about 15 years ago at the tournament in episode 1 or 2.

Kid is a prince too so its hard to tell if he really bested him or if he was laying back a bit playing a role. Reminds me of the scene in Gladiator where Commodus was training against 5 guys in the forrest.

You mean Aemond beating Criston in the yard but yeah. They are definitely making Aemond into the tough guy on that side while Daemon is on the other. Those two also control the two most powerful dragons. Cole has to be in his 40s now I’d guess.

They are obviously setting up a matchup between Daemon and Aemond and their respective dragons so I guess they have to make them look somewhat equal but the other three kids look like twerps compared to Aemond.

Kid is a prince too so its hard to tell if he really bested him or if he was laying back a bit playing a role. Reminds me of the scene in Gladiator where Commodus was training against 5 guys in the forrest.
He never rally held back when he was training them before. He was kinda slapping them around lol. They looked like they were going full bore to me.

so i binged this on some long flights. it's not very good, correct?

and i HATE the actor switches.

ETA: where are the bewbs?
