Houston Texans forever - Mixon to miss at least first four games (5 Viewers)

@GregR

-Check your PM box, believe I linked you there.
If you would be so kind, I'd like you to launch the Texans game thread for the weekend
I'll take care of linking Joe and the FBG Mod, let me know if you have any questions

I have the other 5 games assigned similar with a true fan of the home team launching the game thread this week for the Playoffs
Cheers!

Just a random thought about the Will Anderson trade. With the Texans outperforming their expectations, that 2024 pick we gave up isn't nearly as valuable as we all expected. I was negative on the trade initially but think it was pretty fair in retrospect given Anderson's performance and the pick being in the 20s.

Sure thing. I'll be at the game so probably not posting in there a ton but will try to peek in.

The Carolina Panthers have requested to speak to Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik for their head coaching opening, two sources told the Chronicle Monday night.

Slowik is one of nine coaches the Panthers requested permission to speak to. The others are Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who many believe is Panthers owner David Tepper’s top target; Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan; Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn; Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald; Dolphins offensive coordinator Frank Smith; Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris; Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken; and Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales.

Because Slowik and the Texans are in the playoffs, the coach is not allowed to interview with teams until after the wild card round. His interview would be virtual.

After spending about five minutes praising the Texans for making the playoffs, J.J. Watt appeared to take a shot at former team executive Jack Easterby during his weekly appearance on ESPN's The Pat McAfee Show.

After Watt credited DeMeco Ryans for the Texans' worst-to-first leap, McAfee joked that maybe some of the credit should go to Easterby, the team chaplain-turned-NFL executive who the Texans fired in the middle of last season. McAfee lightheartedly imagined that perhaps Easterby "dumped his holy water" around NRG Stadium on his way out and changed the franchise's fortunes.

“There was a turnaround at a very certain point," Watt said without smiling. "Coincidences aren’t always coincidences, you know?”

Sub-zero windchills in KC and Buffalo. I wanted the home game and division title anyway, but extra glad given those. Don't see any way those aren't a bigger disadvantage for Houston than those teams.

Heh, the change in JJ's expression from the smile it started with when he listens to McAfee talking about Easterby. Could he press his lips together any tighter? https://www.youtube.com/live/P6ZOdJ5A5Ck?si=SyUkdmuHOiB5lpfa&t=4706

Jonathan Greenard, the Texans' leader in sacks, practiced Thursday and expects to play when the Texans face the Browns on Saturday.

Also back was Anderson, who didn’t play in the last game against the Browns with an ankle injury.

Wide receiver Noah Brown, who missed the last two games, also returned to practice.

Greenard, Anderson, defensive tackles Maliek Collins and Sheldon Rankins, wide receivers Robert Woods and Brown, and fullback Andrew Beck were all listed as questionable on the team’s injury report. Defensive end Jerry Hughes was listed as out.

I believe the expectation is that everyone on the D line will at least be available, except for Hughes who is definitely out. Greenard said he was going to play.

Stingley was named the AFC’s Defensive Player of the Month on Thursday, just the sixth Texan to be awarded the honor. From Weeks 13-18, Stingley led the NFL with three interceptions and nine passes defensed in six games, allowing an unreal 1.7 passer rating when targeted by opposing quarterbacks.

HOUSTON -- Brevin Jordan jogged off the field in frustration.

The Houston Texans tight end had just run the wrong route, and when he reached the sidelines, he screamed. The echoing expletive was loud enough to catch coach DeMeco Ryans' attention.

"DeMeco turned around and was like, 'Next play. It's over with. We're coming right back to you,'" Jordan told ESPN.

During the following series, offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik called the same play. This time, Jordan ran the correct route and quarterback C.J. Stroud found him as he bolted into the end zone untouched to put the Texans up 10-0 against the Tennessee Titans.

"For me, I don't know if coaches understand how much that means to a player. To hear that, [it shows] my coach trusts me. He's done that multiple times with me," Jordan said. "He goes out of his way to talk to us to build our confidence. Dudes need that. When you hear that from the head man, you're like, 'Man, I'm about to go bust these boys ***.'"

Players added by the Texans either directly with a draft pick from the Deshaun Watson trade, or from a pick that was acquired at least in part from using a Browns pick.

DE Will Anderson Jr. (Traded Browns 1st plus own 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks, got additional pick)
WR Tank Dell (traded up using Browns 3rd and own 5th)
RB Dameon Pierce (Browns 4th)
LG Kenyon Green (traded Browns 1st down 2 slots for Green and 3 picks)
LB Christian Harris (5th from Green trade plus own 3rd to move up)
WR John Metchie III (4th from Green trade plus own pick to move up)
DE Thomas Booker (5th from Green trade plus 6th to move up)

Still to come:
2024 1st (Browns pick from original trade)
2024 3rd (from Will Anderson trade, Eagles pick originally)
2024 4th (Browns pick from original trade)

The win vaults Stroud past former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, the first overall pick of the 2001 NFL Draft, as the new youngest starting quarterback in league history to come out victorious in a playoff game.

Stroud is also only the fourth rookie passer selected in the first round to win a playoff game.

Houston is now the first team in 42 years, the first since the New York Giants in the 1981 season, to win a playoff game with 200-1 or longer preseason Super Bowl odds (200-1).

They also became only the sixth team in the Super Bowl era, since 1966, to earn a victory in the postseason after winning three or fewer games the previous season.

This game was Slowik's master's piece. I know some have issues with him. But they handled the Browns pass rush which destroyed us the last time we played. Moved the pocket, used extra protection where needed. Even the play where MG had a free run it was intended to get him out of the picture for the shovel pass, just the other lineman knocked it down.

Haven't seen the broadcast to focus in, but some kudos being given to Tunsil for handling MG one on one when they were paired up, too.

It really was the perfect game on both sides of the ball. Easily the best game they've played all season. Love seeing this type of performance in the post season - so unHouston like

We definitely have a chance versus Baltimore or KC. I just hope it warms up a bit.

On another note, really looking forward to having Tank back in 2024. Can't imagine how many more 50+ yard bombs CJ would have under his belt with a healthy Dell.

What a great weekend for playoff football in Texas. Houston dominates and the Cowboys once again get their butts whipped

How many people watched the Browns Texans playoff game?

NBC Sports' Saturday afternoon presentation of the Browns-Texans AFC Wild Card Game averaged 29.0 million viewers across NBC, Peacock, NBC Sports Digital, NFL Digital and Telemundo – ranking as the most-watched Saturday NFL Wild Card game on NBC since 2014.

We don't know opponent or location for next playoff game yet, but we know the time.

It’ll be 3:30 p.m. central time on Saturday and will be broadcast on ESPN and ABC.

Don't remember if I saw this on the game broadcast or one of the other shows talking about the playoffs. Only three QBs have led the league in yards per game and TD to INT ratio.

Joe Montana (1989 MVP year).
Tom Brady 2007 (MVP, 18 wins, 1 giant loss).
CJ Stroud 2023.

(Edit: Fixed, I had said Manning but it was Montana)

As expected, we'll be playing Baltimore. The good guys are opening up at a +9.5. I really think this team has a chance though. They seem to play with a chip on their shoulder and this isn't the same team Baltimore faced in Week 1. I don't think CJ, Nico and Singletary will be as effected by the cold weather being former Big 10 and Buffalo guys. Does suck Noah Brown is out. Loved the contributions he made when Dell got hurt.

Metchie and Hutch are going to have to show again. Baltimore will double Nico and the LBs can hang with Schultz.

Looking back at the Ravens’ losses this year, the team needs to remain balanced. Singletary will have to get yards to let play action happen and prevent ear pinning.

We’re playing with house money, I don’t like our chances, but the above will be what we have to do. We also need the defense to step up big time and at least sensibly contain Lamar’s running.

Temperatures in the 20s makes for miserable conditions for most people in Houston, but if you’re looking for a silver lining to the dreary past couple days: It allowed Texans players to prepare for what they’ll be facing in Baltimore this weekend.

The Texans, who play the Ravens in the AFC divisional playoffs at 3:30 p.m. Saturday (ABC/ESPN), practiced outdoors Tuesday in sub-freezing weather, which they’ll definitely face when they hit the road. Baltimore has been hit with heavy snow this week, but Saturday is expected to be dry and bitterly cold with a high of 25 and low of 15 degrees.

Baltimore has been hit with heavy snow this week
It was 4-5". It's been so damned cold since, though, that none of it is melting. Tomorrow is supposed to creep above freezing, but be cloudy so I don't expect much thaw. Then another 1" or 2" on Friday. The field will be cleared, obviously, but the cold is going to hold.

I clipped the last part of your post, but you're right - that weather Saturday is not going to be fun. The wind is going to blow, too.
