Houston Texans forever - Mixon to miss at least first four games (5 Viewers)

I was going to post in the game thread. But watching another franchise's fans melting down completely was such a refreshing change I didn't want to interupt them.

Our OL coach probably deserves a raise after their performance the last two weeks with so many backups in.

Hahaha, I was also enjoying that

This team is really impressing me - Not giving into injury excuses and playing as a complete unit with lots of heart. Can't wait til they get healthy. My friends at the game said the atmosphere felt like the early 2010s Turn Down For Watt days.

And yeah, give that OL coach a raise and lock in Slowik for another 5 years.

But have to feel good about Stroud's progress, and also what we're seeing from Tank Dell. For those doing fantasy, I won't be surprised if we have some seesawing between him and Nico Collins as defenses try to take away whoever had the last good game. Nico was the better receiver the first two games and Jax worked to take him away more and Tank made them pay. I could see it swinging back against the Steelers.

Nico 7/168/2td.

I’ve always liked Ryans and he has this team playing really well. Lot of nice players and Stroud certainly looks the part. After all the Watson nonsense, this has to feel really good for Texans fans.

Schedule is shaping up to not be very daunting either. As long as the defense doesn’t pull another week 2 and completely not show up there are a lot of winnable games on this list:

ATL 2-2
NO 2-2
Bye
CAR 0-4
TAM 3-1
CIN 1-3
ARI 1-3
JAX 2-2
DEN 1-3
NYJ 1-2?
TEN 2-2
CLE 2-2
TEN 2-2
IND 2-2

Wow. Jets and Bengals had looked to be NFL contenders but neither looks good. That doesn't leave a whole lot of high caliber opponents. Tampa might be playing above their heads. Jacksonville and Cleveland and maybe New Orleans might be the best of the bunch there.

Yeah, its not nearly as rough as it looked before the season started. Obviously it is early in the season but there is a whole lot of mediocre / up & down teams down the entire remaining list. If the improvement on both sides of the ball isn’t smoke and mirrors we look poised to have a much better record than I was originally thinking. Maybe even a shot at the playoffs if they can hold their own in the division and play like they did against JAX and not how they did against Indy.

Wow Texans fans what can we say was that a win or was that a win? I hate that I'm beginning to expect the Texans to win now. I don't like that feeling and still focusing on wanting them to improve week to week and feel like their coaching are competent which is something I've begged for forever. For possibly the first time in franchise history I've felt that they have competent coaching who tries to maximize their strengths and masks their weaknesses. They actually seem to have a game plan and are finding ways to counteract other teams strengths.

A few things I've noticed --
1. The defense is solid against the pass but still softer against the run. They have made up for it by having multiple hats hitting the runner over and over but hopefully they can improve on this.
2. One of the hardest hitting defenses I've seen this season. I haven't got to see every team and not saying they are the hardest hitting in the NFL but I'd be surprised if out of the top 10. You can tell DeMeco Ryans practices hitting hard and often and it's not just coach speak to media.
3. Second week in a row where they have shut down opposing offense. They have played bend don't break defense and it's working.
4. Offense still leaving points off the board. This can be a good or bad thing. Good in that they aren't playing "lucky" and have a lot to improve upon, bad that it can come back and haunt them.
5. The makeshift offensive line has played way above their heads and should be given the game ball second week in a row. I can't expect this to continue but luckily Texans will begin to get some of their starters back.
6. Stroud doesn't play like a rookie. We all now this and he still has things to improve but poise is there and he's passed the eye test. I have to believe he will hit some rookie wall at some point. It's encouraging that he still has room to improve and it's playing out of mind lucky type of football.
7. Looks like it's Collins and Tank as the outside WR and Woods in the slot. Jordan (TE) again was targeted which shows Stroud isn't locked in to 1 or 2 WR. Collins blew up but that doesn't mean the rest won't get theirs. I can see ATL next week lock in Collins and Woods or Tank or Jordan or Schultz more open and get more targets.
8. Can Texans actually make the playoffs? Their schedule it's daunting and who is heads and shoulders better in their division? I still think they have got to experience some growing pains this season but tied at 2-2 in division I can't automatically say it's impossible they can't get in.
9. The coaching has been more than competent and just seeing solid coaching putting their players in the best position can turn a team into one of the worst to at worst an average team.
10. Speaking of coaching, second week where the other team begins to take the momentum and you get the "here we go typical Texans will now collapse" feelings we've had hundreds of times in the past only for the Texans to buckle down and regain momentum.
11. National media besides Chris Simms brief mention about Stroud it's been fairly quiet about what they've done in 2 weeks. You'd expect the NFL to showcase a high drafted QB breaking records and on pace to do some things most have not seen. I get there was the 70 point MIA story 2 weeks ago the overshadowed their win but this Sunday thought for sure it would be a bigger story. I don't care if they continue to fall under the radar. You can see on social media that most consider the Texans to be last year Texans. Different coaching and players not the same team so not sure why most consider them to be just as bad.

Yes, it's pretty quiet in the national media. Seen more talk about Pickett being out than about the game or Stroud.

I did see Jason McCourty picked them for his "Which team made the biggest statement Sunday" this morning on Good Morning Football.

Edit to add: Jamie Erdahl gave her game ball to Nick Caserio. As she put it "We are classically trained to doubt what the Texans are trying to put together". Part of that is including getting Demeco for coach, as well as the roster overhaul.

Edit again to add: ESPN's NFL Live also had a segment on Stroud, including playing his quotes at the podium that have been getting a lot of play already today around town.

I was one of the few posters that walked around kicking tires with you guys over the summer.
You let me unleash on the Owner/FO and you also allowed me to share that I thought CJ Stroud was the absolute right move
It's early but I see marked improvement in some areas including the defense, the way the OL has rallied without Tunsil, there is a lot to discuss beyond just the QB

But look at what happens when you have a QB that can deliver the football and make good decisions quickly
I'm happy for the fan base but will never forgive what the Texans FO/Owner did and how they handled things after the KC loss in the Playoffs and everything that unrolled for like 2 years after

It's a new day in Houston, we could go on and on about the fear of success because last time they crumbled when they appeared to be on the cusp of being a real NFL team.
I hope they can continue to keep the fire going for '23.
They also traded up to No 3, that looks like a very wise move, not sure if they have a 1st next year or not, but they are trending in the right direction
Houston is going to beat the snot out of a few more teams this year,
This is one of those seasons where they are catching people off guard and they are throwing roundhouse punches that are connecting and knocking people the **** back.

Cheers!

This is the only bittersweet part of their recent success for me. Caserio didn't want CJ and was likely forced on him by McNair. I think this team would be in a much better situation with a better front office given all the picks and fire power they've had in recent years. I think they often overpay, panic and fail to play hardball with other teams/players. This season is trending in the right direction but I credit Demeco more than the front office.

We still have Cleveland's first round pick next year. We gave 1.12 (from Browns for Deshaun), our 2.02, our own 2024 1st and 3rd, and got 1.03 (Will Anderson) and 4.03 which we then traded for the Eagles 2024 3rd.

At the moment we're both 2-2. Originally there has been grumbling that it was too much to give up for one player with how many needs we had, especially as our own 1st might be not only a top ten pick, but could be a pick in a year you could potentially get a haul from someone wanting one of the top QBs.

Sending our own 2024 1st is looking better than it was. Though I imagine most people would still pick Cleveland's pick to be the worse one, but not by nearly as much as it looked 4 weeks ago.

Cam Johnston is going to be coming off of Injured Reserve. Should be a big boost for when we do have to punt. Zetner was averaging 38.6 yards per punt. Johnston last year averaged 48.1. So kind of a swing there, yeah.

From an ESPN power ranking article, some nuggets about the pass rush:

20. Houston Texans (2-2)

Week 4 ranking: 28

Defensive efficiency: 54.0 (17th)

Biggest issue on defense: Sacking the quarterback

The biggest issue for the Texans' defense is its inability to get sacks. Houston is tied for the fifth-fewest sacks in the NFL with seven. The issue isn't pressuring the quarterbacks, as the Texans have the third-highest pressure rate (44.4%). But they can't turn pressure into sacks. The team leader is defensive end Jonathan Greenard with three sacks, and the pass rush showed potential against the Steelers, sacking their quarterback three times. If this unit wants to reach the next level, it must start making the big plays and sacking quarterbacks.

A bit early to put stock in these. But the ESPN FPI predictor thing on draft order has the Bears with the top two picks, with Carolina's pick being #1. Talk about a possible haul if it works out like that.

They have our pick that Cards own as pick #15, and the Browns pick we own as pick 19.

The Houston Texans left guard Kendrick Green suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee against the Pittsburgh Steelers and is expected to be out indefinitely, a source told ESPN on Tuesday.

When the Texans inserted Green into the starting lineup, he was 33rd overall in pass-block win rate (91.0) and 52nd in run-block win rate (65.9%).

One option to replace Green is Jones after he recovers from a hand injury he suffered in Week 3. Center Jarrett Patterson, who replaced the original starting center Juice Scruggs, could slide to left guard once the team activates Scruggs (hamstring) from the injured reserve.

Anyone have a PFF login? Curious what Christian Harris' rating is. Noticed he had 13 tackles Sunday.

Also, what are our CB ratings? I see Tavierre Thomas looks like he's 3rd in the league, and Stingley and Nelson 5th and 8th? Is that right, or is it not sorting by what I think it's sorting by? Their stats are hidden but seems like it's sorting in order anyway.

And Harris 5th and To'o To'o 6th and Perryman 9th?

Original prediction: DE Will Anderson Jr. ranks top 10 in pass rush win rate at edge.
Why I'm sticking: He ranks third in PRWR among all edge rushers so far. Assuming health, this one is going to hit. Heck, let's go further, shall we? I'll say Anderson hits double-digit sacks, too. He has only one through four games. Between Anderson, quarterback C.J. Stroud and third-round receiver Tank Dell, the Texans' draft class is humming.

Harris is terrible according to pff, 105 overall for linebackers, his one saving grace is he is 29th for linebackers in coverage.

Thomas is second in coverage, 4th overall. Nelson is 12th in coverage and Stingley is Stingley is 50th in coverage.

I'm surprised but CJ Stroud sits on my waiver wire in a few leagues and I guess some folks don't know he's had 3 20+ pt weeks in FF, ranks 10th in a couple of mine.

9. Jalen Hurts
10. CJ Stroud

-Another thing I want to point out is Houston right now is one of the WORST teams you can stream a Def/ST against, many have tried and failed thru the first month of '23

I cannot get over Tepper trading up to No 1, when he did it I thought Texans just lost out big time for what Lovie pulled in his final game with a head set on, think about how awful 2022 was for a Houston Texans fan...fast forward and that blundering idiot takes a shrimp No 1 overall and I posted everywhere how much better I thought Stroud was as a No 1 overall pick and was mostly heckled and that's another reason i checked in here, I had a feeling we might see something special sooner over later.

Stroud has nothing to do with what transpired before he touched down in Houston.
And he fell right into y'alls lap. And it would seem he has weapons he can exploit immediately.
I'm not sure if Nico is looking better because of Stroud but he's a classic 3rd year breakout at WR and that guy is HUGE, god help a cornerback that has to get him on the ground.
I think CJ has a lot to do with the success of both Collins and the instant "IT" factor we recognize in Dell.

Ladies and Gentlemen there was/is ACDC, I give you the latest QB-WR-WR trio out of Houston
"CJDC"
:headbang:

It's been fun catching up on all the articles and videos praising CJ and the Texans this past week. I guess we're a team to watch out for. Not only that, I'm grateful Houston is finally fielding a team that's fun to watch. It's been a solid decade of frustration and absolute boredom. All those Division winning BOB led teams were always fools gold in a weak division.

Yeah, we need to win 2 of the next 3 I think or we will get relegated back to not worth talking about.

So practice reports are the OL alignment has been:
Tunsil LT. Titus Howard LG. Patterson C. Mason RG. Fant RT.

And Juice not ready to return yet. Wonder if he would get tried at guard. Assume they won't want to move Patterson with how he is playing.

Watching Steelers broadcast... it feels good to see we do things now like give help to the person blocking the other team's All Pro pass rusher.

Also, our WRs seem to have bought into the importance of run blocking.

That Bills fail on the 2pt conversion in London is an example of what I think CJ does sometimes with too soft of a pass on a short pass. Too much time for defense to close.

Lots of Texans snippets from Top 2023 NFL rookies: Ranking 10 best first-years, young QBs

1. C.J. Stroud, QB, Houston Texans

Stats: 1,461 passing yards, 7 TD passes, 0 INTs
Drafted: No. 2 overall

Why is Stroud No. 1? Let's start with the fact that the first 186 regular-season passing attempts of his career went without an interception -- and that's now an NFL record. Even in the face of the pressure, he has played with composure and quality decision-making.

Stroud has been busy, too. He has the fifth-most attempts in the league, is one of seven quarterbacks with at least 200 total dropbacks and has a QBR (56.2) better than Trevor Lawrence, Derek Carr and Deshaun Watson. Stroud is finding success on a Texans team swimming with young players. -- Legwold

10. Will Anderson Jr., DE, Houston Texans

Stats: 21 tackles, 1 sack
Drafted: No. 3 overall

Anderson has been slightly overshadowed by Stroud in Houston but is still fantastic in his own right. The edge rusher has just one sack in five games, but he has added 21 tackles and a blocked field goal to go with it. Anderson's pass rush win rate of 30.1% is third best in the league and shows he's getting to the quarterback. And as the season goes on, he'll start to close on the passer better to turn those pressures into sacks.

His flashes through five games have been notable, and my bet would be that Anderson will end the season with double-digit sacks. -- Miller

What is the biggest early takeaway from the 2023 draft class?

Houston's aggressiveness to land Stroud and Anderson with back-to-back picks is paying off with the best early returns of the 2023 draft class. Not only does Stroud look like the top rookie quarterback, but Anderson is a leader on the Texans' defense and is playing well. Plus, receiver Tank Dell (third-round pick) is averaging 17.1 yards per reception, and linebacker Henry To'oTo'o (fifth-round pick) looks great. This 2-3 Texans team is ascending in the AFC thanks in part to their rookies' play. -- Pryor

What's the outlook for the two first-round QBs who didn't make this list?

Richardson (No. 4 pick) missed one game with a concussion, and he's now down for at least four games with a shoulder injury. We've seen his playmaking traits, both as a runner and thrower, but he will need to log more reps against pressure when he returns and improve there. Richardson's QBR of 34.4 when blitzed ranks 29th in the NFL.

Carolina's Bryce Young (No. 1 pick) must improve his decision-making and ball security while also generating more explosive plays. He has two games with multiple interceptions in four starts, and his four explosive-play throws rank 34th in the league. -- Bowen

Which late-rounder is overperforming right now?

Texans linebacker Henry To'oTo'o. Drafted at No. 167 overall, he has stepped right into the middle of DeMeco Ryans' defense, and his instincts against the run and instincts in coverage have continued to stand out each week. He leads all first-year linebackers with 39 tackles and has been among the biggest bright spots of an impressive rookie class. To'oTo'o is known for his football sense and see-read-react ability on the second level, and we're seeing it. -- Reid

Run blocking needs to improve a lot still. I did come across this stat today about the pass protection against the Falcons. 2nd best job of protection in the entire NFL this season:

Stroud wasn’t touched Sunday. And he was pressured only four times all game. The Falcons generated pressure on 11.4% of Stroud’s drop backs, which was the second lowest pressure rate in a game by a defense this season, according to NFL’s Next Gen stats.

Hou vs Cle week 16 could be interesting too

Josh Jones is back to practicing which is a good boost to OL depth.

But Tank Dell is not expected to play this week after suffering a concussion in week 5.

Texans have a bye in week 7.

Y'all seem to be on a good trajectory and you got the most important position right. Really impressed with the roster construction. Long ways from being contenders but def got the ship headed in the right direction again.

The Texans' offense currently ranks sixth in pass offense DVOA. You know how teams like to protect their rookie quarterbacks with a strong run game? Well, the Texans rank dead last in DVOA running the ball.

Despite Ryans' optimism about the blocking, Pierce has the sixth-highest stuff rate (23.8%) and second-worst yards before contact average (-0.2), according to Next Gen Stats. Despite being hit behind the line of scrimmage, he's averaging 3.2 yards after contact, which ranks 14th.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson will miss a second consecutive game with a right shoulder injury, the team announced Friday.

PJ Walker will start at quarterback Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.

Watson has not had a full practice since Sept. 22 while dealing with a bruised rotator cuff to his throwing shoulder.

Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is "probably" going to miss the rest of the regular season and could undergo shoulder surgery in the next week or so, team owner Jim Irsay told ESPN on Monday.

Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill suffered a high right ankle sprain during Sunday's loss to the Baltimore Ravens, putting his availability in the coming weeks in question, sources told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler and Turron Davenport on Monday.

Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said Trevor Lawrence is day-to-day with a left knee injury but wouldn't elaborate on the specifics of the injury or whether his starting quarterback could play in Thursday night's game at the Saints.

After six weeks, the Texans are tied for 10th in points allowed per game (18.8) after finishing 27th in 2022, allowing 24.7 points per game. Their pressure rate ranks second (41%) while they're tied for 12th in red zone defense (50%). They've improved their run defense, allowing 651 yards through six games this season (ranked 17th in the NFL). Last year, they allowed the sixth-most rushing yards in NFL history (2,894).

EDGE Will Anderson Jr., Texans

When Anderson lined up over right tackle Ryan Ramczyk, which was the overwhelming majority of snaps, it was a heavyweight fight that often ended with Ramczyk winning the repetition. There were moments where Anderson would get on Ramczyk's hip and bend the edge but he was not winning through the veteran. Half of his eight pressures came over left Trevor Penning or Cesar Ruiz, who replaced Ramczyk when he exited late.

Which coordinator has boosted his head-coaching stock the most through six weeks?

...
Graziano: Deep cut here: It's probably too early for first-year Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik to get serious looks, but teams don't mind talking to young offensive minds, and it's impossible to look at what Houston has done and not be impressed.
Fowler: Slowik has impressed in short order. He might be a year away but definitely looks poised to become a strong candidate eventually.

The Texans have placed safety Eric Murray on the injured reserve list, the team announced Wednesday.

Demeco indicated Tank and Juice are expected to be ready after the bye.

One of the first changes DeMeco Ryans made when he became head coach of the Texans was to switch up the locker room.

In previous years, players’ lockers were arranged by position groups. The defensive linemen sat with the defensive linemen, the offensive linemen sat with the offensive linemen, the cornerbacks sat with the cornerbacks, and so on. Rarely would offensive and defensive players cross paths unless it was a team meeting.

So, Ryans decided to mix and match position groups when he got to Houston.

Stroud’s locker is in between Pitre’s and Tunsil’s. Running back Dameon Pierce’s locker is next to linebacker Denzel Perryman’s.

And cornerback Tavierre Thomas sits next to running back Gerrid Doaks.

“I really wanted to build an environment conducive for guys to communicate and talk to each other from different sides of the ball — offense and defense,” Ryans said of his reasoning for switching the locker room. “Just making sure we build a true team environment and not an environment that it’s offense, defense and you feel separated.”

That subtle change of where players sit, and who they interact with has paid off. It’s made the Texans a closer team, players say.

How much closer?

“Wayyy closer,” right tackle Tytus Howard said with emphasis.

Defensive tackle Kurt Hinish, whose locker is diagonal from Stroud and Pitre, agreed.

“It definitely changed the dynamic,” Hinish said. “I talk to Pitre and C.J. a lot.” ... “Previously, I would have never talked to them,” Hinish said. “But now that we’re here, I talk to them all the time. It’s cool. I like it.”

Robert Woods was the only player to not practice Thursday, missing his third straight day. Good chance he won't play Sunday then.
