Houston Texans Pre-season Thread (1 Viewer)

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports...nt/6564888.html

Texans cornerback Dunta Robinson, who has yet to sign a contract and report to training camp, says he is likely to join the team the week the regular season begins, though that could change at any minute.

Robinson declared he would be on “the first thing smoking” and at practice tomorrow morning if the Texans would agree not to place a franchise tag on him for a second consecutive year.

“I’d be on the way to the airport while we were talking, and be the first one at the next practice if they did that,” Robinson said in a telephone interview from Sarasota, Fla., where he is working out to prepare for the upcoming season.

Robinson said should the negotiations stretch to the end of the preseason he would report and do his best to be ready for the season opener against the Jets on Sept. 13. With a new defensive coordinator (Frank Bush) and a new secondary coach (David Gibbs), Robinson admits that it might not be easy for him to get up to speed.

“If it were the same system we’ve been running, I could be ready to play this Sunday,” he said. “I’m in great shape; better than I was at any point last season. In a way, I don’t know how I was even out there late in the season, as weak as me knee and legs were. But I was anxious to get back out there. I had to because I knew the team needed me.”

After not being able to come to an agreement on a long-term deal, the Texans placed a franchise tag on Robinson. About the only thing left to negotiate since that point has been whether the team would agree not to place the restrictive tag on him next offseason.

"It’s what other teams do and have done,” Robinson said. “It’s what New England did with their best cornerback. It’s what Tennessee did with its best defensive player. You can go down the list and that’s how a lot of good teams do business. It’s what teams do."

“It’s not a crazy request. I’m trying to meet them in the middle, but they won’t come halfway. I would have been at all the offseason stuff, and at training camp from Day 1 if they just agreed to that.”

The Patriots placed a franchise tag on Asante Samuel before the 2007 season, and agreed to not place it on him the following year. The Titans made a similar deal with Albert Haynesworth last season. Each player left his original team, signing a huge contract as a free agent.

Robinson said though he was upset that Texans general manager Rick Smith went against an early declaration in the negotiations that the team would not franchise him, he understands that the team was trying to sign him at a lesser rate than his perceived value as a free agent.

“He said I wasn’t a franchise tag-worthy player,” Robinson said. “If that’s the case, then why pay me franchise-level money? And possibly two years in a row? Doesn’t make sense to me.”

Robinson, who has not talked publicly about the situation since April, would not say how much the Texans offered him long-term. But he noted that the reported $23 million guarantee is almost what the Texans would be forced to pay him for only two seasons of work if he were franchised next year as well.

The franchise tag (the average salary for the five highest paid players at a position) for cornerbacks this season is just under $10 million. That number will almost certainly rise for the 2010 season, possibly to the $11-12 million range. (Per the collective bargaining agreement a player who is franchised twice is due at least a 10-percent raise the second year or the tag level, whichever is highest.)

Robinson is the first player in Texans history to be given the franchise tag.

“It’s killing me not to be there. My teammates know that, and the Texans’ front office knows that,” Robinson said. “Once this is over, they know I will give my all and play my heart out just as I have always done. I’m a Texan through and through. They know that too.

“I’ve planned on being a Texan for my entire career. That doesn’t mean I don’t want to be paid what I am worth. Whatever happens on the business side, when the season starts, I’m going to put it all out there on the field, just like I always have.”

That's the dunta houston fell in love with. If that's all it takes for him to come do it.

if what is all it takes? If you read between the lines, Dunta is making it blatantly clear he wants to leave next season. Every player who gets the team to agree not to put the tag on them the next year, leaves in free agency. Its pretty clear he doesnt want to be a Texan. eff him I say, dont give him nothing.

Woah. Here's something I didn't know before. From a Chronicle article about Fred Bennett:

Large for his position yet unusually quick and possessing excellent ballhawking instincts, Bennett has too many assets to settle for being a middling talent. As a rookie, he led the NFL in average yards surrendered per pass thrown his way, prompting predictions of a Pro Bowl-studded career. It didn't happen in his second season, but it still can.
I really didn't think he was anything special his rookie year, certainly not a league leader in any significant category.Speaking of which, I wish we could get at stats like that.

I think footballoutsiders.com was overhyping Bennett after his rookie year based primarily on that stat. Not a fan of them myself, but thier work is thoughprovoking and often challenges conventional notions.

Injury list from Saturday's preseason opener against the Chiefs:

• TE Joel Dreesseen, hyperextended knee

• FS Troy Nolan, broken hand

• FB Boomer Grigsby, sprained ankle

• QB Rex Grossman, pulled hamstring

• OT Eric Winston, sprained ankle

• OLB Xavier Adibi, broken finger

• DE Tim Bulman, bruised quad
(on who was injured during the game) "Eric Winston (has) a little ankle issue, we'll check him more tomorrow. DelJuan Robinson got a stinger, he should be OK. Joel Dreessen has a hyperextended knee. I'll know more about him tomorrow. Troy Nolan broke a hand. It's going to be a while; we'll evaluate him in the next couple of days. (Xavier) Adibi has got a finger (injury). Frank Okam got a shin cut, Tim Bulman a quad. (Boomer) Grigsby looks pretty serious with an ankle, and then Rex Grossman looks like he got a pretty good hamstring, so it's a very long list for a first time out. We're going to have to get back and evaluate where we're at."

Injury updates

on injuries) "The significant ones, Joel Dreessen may miss a couple of days but I'll think he'll be back once New Orleans gets to town. We'll be ready to play against New Orleans. The most significant ones, Boomer Grigsby severe high ankle sprain it could be six weeks, which is what I was told today. Rex Grossman has a pretty good hamstring, could be four or five weeks with him. Troy Nolan broke his hand, rather fractured his hand and will be having surgery on Monday. We have a decision to make on him depending on how long he will be out. Other than that we just have a bunch of just a few nicks and things where people should be back next wee, so those are the biggest ones."

(on TE Joel Dreessen coming back for the Saints Game) "Yeah I think so. They told me Joel hyper-extended his knee when he caught that ball up the seam and they think he's just real sore today. Hopefully today and tomorrow will give him the rest he needs so he will be able to get back on the field when New Orleans gets to town."

(on needed another fullback and quarterback) "Well with the fullback with the situation there we'll continue to evaluate (tight end) James Casey, he did a lot of good things in the game. He has flexibility in moving around for this football team so that's a first option and we'll go from there and make that decision. From a quarterback stand point, obviously I'm not going to go into this game with just two quarterbacks we're looking around right now and talked to a few people so we'll see how that goes. But obviously I have to continue (quarterback) Matt (Schaub) along his pattern for the preseason and (quarterback) Dan (Orlovsky) needs all the work he can get. But to go through the rest of training with two would be a little scary."

(on Alex Brink being a possibility for quarterback) "Yeah, he would be a possibility."

What about Andre Hall? Did I see him in the preseason game? Is he worth anything or will he probably be cut?

(This is deeeeeeeeep 53 man rosters)

Sorry, Hall is who I meant, not Hill. He only played in the 4th quarter with all the scrubs, didnt do anything impressive. He will probably be training camp fodder if Foster comes back ok.

Texans have re-signed quarterback Alex Brink to replace the injured Rex Grossman.

Brink was the Texans' seventh-round draft choice in 2008. He was on the roster last season and was waived in the offseason after Grossman was signed.

Grossman is expected to miss four to five weeks with a pulled hamstring he suffered in Saturday's preseason opener against Kansas City.

The Texans' top two quarterbacks are starter Matt Schaub and backup Dan Orlovsky.
http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Source...n-Campbell.html
The Houston Texans signed free agent linebacker Khary Campbell today to bolster their depth on defense and special teams, according to a league source.

Campbell, 30, has recorded 104 career tackles and forced two fumbles in seven NFL seasons.

The 6-foot-2, 224-pounder from Bowling Green appeared in 14 games last season for the Washington Redskins and registered 13 tackles. It was one season removed from a career-high 34 tackles with the Redskins.

Campbell had a previous stint with the New York Jets prior to spending five seasons in Washington.

Per the source, the Texans also auditioned free agent linebackers Alex Lewis and Darrell McClover on Sunday

Kubiak was on local sports radio this afternoon during the drive home. One tidbit I thought I'd pass on is that they are only practicing Chris Brown once a day, and limiting his work on artificial turf, in order to try to keep him healthy.

6 fights today during the joint practice with the Texans and Saints. Here's a video of a fight between Shockey and Demeco Ryans:

man i wish i would've seen that. the saints O and texans D were on the other field. didn't wanna give up my seats.after today, i  andre johnson even more. he was the last player to go inside as he took the time after practice to sign autographs for just about everybody wanting one. nice to see that from the superstar.

A signing and couple rumors

twitter rumor from movethe chains

The Texans are actively shopping DT Travis Johnson

http://blogs.chron.com/nfl/2009/08/kubiak_...arters_are.html

On defense, Amobi Okoye is being pushed by Shaun Cody. Okoye better turn it up a notch in the last two games. Kubiak says Cody has been playing well and improving every week. Expect Cody to get a lot of playing time against Minnesota, a team he knows better than anyone on defense because he played for the Lions against the Vikings two times in each of the last four years.

The truth is that the defensive tackles haven't played well at all, which means both starting spots could be available if somebody would step up and take it. DelJuan Robinson has been nicked up and hasn't made the next step everyone predicted for him. Frank Okam has flashed but was terrible against the Saints. Travis Johnson continues to recover from hernia surgery. They need him sooner rather than later. They're hoping Johnson will be ready for some playing time against the Jets.

Interesting. Are people getting impatient with Okoye?RE: Travis Johnson. Did he play well last year?

Johnson= mediocore, but that was actually better than most of DT play. From the same guy on Twitter"I don't see the Texans getting a whole lot in return for Travis Johnson. Out of shape, lazy and non-aggressive" Okoye = no ability to stop the inside run. Is decent when chasing or pass rushing but is easily pushed around by a single OLmen. Right now should just be seeing time on obvious passing downs. The texans are trying to convince us that they are playing vanilla in pre-season and will be more aggressive in terms of scheme once the regualar season starts, but the 22nd overall in defense last year was the 2nd best performance in the history of the Texans and a good portion of the fan base is not buying it until we see better. under the more aggressive version of the defense Okoye is supposed to be a 3 gap penatrater which he is more suited for than holding the point of attack.

deljuan should have a spot locked up. he was our best DT last year. okoye needs to step up he has to be in his 20s now right? haha. and i'm done with johnson.

good thing the coaches arent as fickle as the fan base. If TJ is still hurt on opening day, I see the starting lineup being Okoye and Robinson. If Okam has a monster game on monday I could see him pushing Robinson, but I dont think the coaches are going to give up on their 22 year old former 1st rounder in Okoye. No matter how much the fans cry about it.

from Kubiak
(on if DT Shaun Cody is making a difference on defense) "Yes, I think he has played very well. I think he's pushing for a starting job. That's how well he's played, so a big two weeks for him. We'll see how he comes along and see what happens, but he's done a good job."(on if he can elaborate on Cody) "He's playing very well. When he's had his chances to play, he's been very effective, he's made plays. So we've got to look at a way of getting him on the field with our 11, and that's how well he's playing out there. Does that mean we use him with Amobi (Okoye) together? Does that mean he's getting more reps at the three? I don't know, but he's going to get an opportunity to play with our ones a great deal this week because he's earned that right."
It's not crying or fickle when Oyoke is getting whipped, the Saints game is not new. Probably not in the conversasion as starter if were not high 1st rounder, so you are correct the Texans are trying to see the investment through. Apparently, between an elbow injury and not stepping up consistently, Robinson has not seized the chance to lock down a job. The idea of starter at DT is a bit misleading anyway, the top four if not five guys will in some manner will rotate, so we see plenty of all of them. If I were making a bet, i say that if healthy, Travis Johnson and Okoye will run out as first teamers against the Jets in couple of weeks.

oh I agree that a healthy TJ would line up with Okoye to start the game, Im just thinking TJ might not be healthy in time. Im not a TJ fan, but I have to admit the others have not shown enough consistency to replace him in the starting lineup. I guess Kubiak is seeing more from Cody in practices and on film, because I dont remember seeing anything spectacular from him in the last 2 games.

I agree. Cody's well is probably relative versus truly making a difference at the position.

The Texans have traded defensive tackle Travis Johnson to the San Diego Chargers. The Texans dealt Johnson for a conditional draft choice that could be a fifth- or sixth-round pick, depending on his performance.

Johnson, the first-round pick in 2005, had been out while recovering from surgery for a sports hernia. He was supposed to play for the first time in the last preseason game against Tampa Bay and be ready for the regular-season opener against the New York Jets.

Yeah, I don't have any complaints about that trade. I don't think he would have done much better than what we have now. I'd rather get the pick and have mediocre DT play this year than not get the pick and still have mediocre DT play this year.

He is not a total waste of space type bust, but has not played to first round ability. he looks more like a 5th or so rounder who surprsied, but overall is mediocore at best.

1st round pick that has played like a 6th round pick. He was a total waste of money. Has work ethic issues and always seems hurt.

remind me did the Texans play the 4-3 or the 3-4. Maybe he is more suited to be a 3/4 take up space end? depth guy anyway

He is in the last year of his contract, so them getting something for a current backup who wouldn't be with the team beyond this season is probably a good move.

Texans run a 4-3 with a NT and # technique DT. Johnson was the the NT for the team.

Injury updates: nothing seems serious and 4 cuta

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports...nt/6597510.html

Texans coach Gary Kubiak said today that quarterback Matt Schaub, receiver Kevin Walter and free safety Eugene Wilson will be “day to day” for the New York Jets regular-season opener because of injuries suffered in Monday's 17-10 loss to Minnesota.

Schaub suffered a sprained ankle and was wearing a protective boot after the game. Kubiak said Schaub is confident he'll be able to play against the Jets.

Walter suffered a hamstring injury. If he can't play, Andre Davis will replace him.

Wilson suffered a knee injury when quarterback Brett Favre drilled him with an illegal crack-back block. Kubiak said if Wilson can't start, it's yet to be determined who would replace him.

Also, there were no surprises as the Texans reduced their roster to 75 today.

Placed on waivers were cornerback David Pittman, offensive tackle Jason Watkins, receiver Mike Jones and cornerback Cletis Gordon.

Rosters must be reduced to 53 on Saturday by 5 p.m

The Houston Texans have informed Zac Diles that he has won the starting job at weakside linebacker, according to a league source.

AP

The Houston Texans have named Zac Diles as their starting weakside linebacker over Xavier Adibi.

Diles has had a strong preseason and has outplayed Xavier Adibi, who struggled against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night.

Diles shifted over from the strongside when rookie linebacker Brian Cushing hurt his knee.

"Pretty darn well," Texans coach Gary Kubiak told the Houston Chronicle when asked about Diles' play.

Diles is a third-year linebacker from Kansas State who was on pace for over 120 tackles when he broke his leg last season in practice.

He started the first eight games last season, finishing second on the team with 66 tackles. He also registered a sack, a forced fumble and his first career interception.

He posted a career-high 13 tackles against the Pittsburgh Steelers

[so I take it you guys are not sad to see him go. a top 16 first rounder busted out?
He is not a total waste of space type bust, but has not played to first round ability. he looks more like a 5th or so rounder who surprsied, but overall is mediocore at best.
remind me did the Texans play the 4-3 or the 3-4. Maybe he is more suited to be a 3/4 take up space end? depth guy anyway
Texans run a 4-3 with a NT and # technique DT. Johnson was the the NT for the team.
keep in mind that TJ was drafted when they were still using a 3-4, then they switched to a 4-3. So he wasnt really suited for the role.

slight correction to the article posted above: Diles switched TO the strong side not from it when Cushing got hurt. With Cushing out the starters were Diles(SAM), Ryans(MLB), Adibi(WILL). Im a tad surprised Diles won the will back with Adibi getting all the reps there, but it looks like Kubiak is holding Adibi accountable for blowing the gap and letting Peterson go for 75 yards.

I think he also blew the same assignment last week on the Bell TD run. Kubiak did not mention a name, but said he was disappointed in that the exact mistake was made against the same offense look.

I've been a Zac Diles fan so I'm glad to hear this. I'd love to go pick him up in my IDP leagues but I'm concerned he won't do as well as last year's numbers as I doubt he'll be playing in nickel situations like he did last year.
