How about the faceless, spineless review booth refs? (1 Viewer)

Summary of what Gerry Austin stated last night:

"The play was reviewed, but as ex-NFL referee and current ESPN analyst Gerry Austin explained, the call that was made — apparently, that Tate and Jennings simultaneously possessed the football, resulting in a catch — is not reviewable. Other than checking to see if the ball had hit the turf or if someone was out of bounds, there was nothing for the replay to change."

Apparently others disagree. I want to hear Pereira's take, and see the NFL's forthcoming statement.
Its BC they are looking at the rulebook and not the casebook (which Fwiw explains how they interpret said rulebook)

Matt Pomeroy ‏@MattPomPomFrom the 2012 NFL Instant Replay Casebook: “When a simultaneous catch is ruled in the field of play or the sideline the Referee cannot rule on who actually made the catch, but he can review whether the pass is complete or incomplete.”
Good one. I don't know where to get the casebook.

Here's the 2011 casebook. I don't see anything in it about what plays are reviewable.

(It does clarify that when the DB gains control in the air first, it's not a simultaneous catch even if the WR gains joint control by the time they hit the ground. It's an INT in that case as long as the DB never completely loses control.)

Pereira finally weighs in, but not on the reviewability aspect.

Let's address the SEA/GB situation & move on. It should not have been a TD. Jennings controlled the ball first & Tate clearly committed OPI.

Everything that could go wrong went wrong here. Even the commish's inability to overturn a game result. We don't want him to and that bit us as well.

Jeff Fisher has been on the competition committee for as long as I can remember. I used to enjoy reading some of his quotes at the Titans site, in the spring, after their meetings. One of the things he has mentioned was special circumstances where an extremely unique situation made it the lone exception to a rule and thus they don't even watch the tape and discuss it much. I think this might be one of those situations. It's pretty difficult to think of a rule they could change that would solve this and not negatively affect other games.

The only thing with the replay booth is back when they were installing this, removing this, agreeing to this...back when everyone was uncertain if they wanted it and it was a big debate, there was a head ref (chairman, president...some title) that was available by phone. It was only going to be for a brief time (maybe first four weeks) if anyone ran into difficulties and to assure teams of a smooth process. AFAIK they never used that guy. MAYBE having some senior ref, a retired guy that reffed for 20 some odd years, by the phone for an emergency situation would have been helpful here. It's really difficult to come up with a solution that compensates for a "right in front of you" bad call.

I don't like the NFL's negotiation tactics and that we fans are always paying. Whether it's wondering if a season will start or strike, eventual rise in ticket prices to make both sides happy, or arguing about bad refs...it's always at a cost to us, not the players or owners. That'll never change, but it just seems like how about you don't go to a negotiating discussion with the threat of a work stoppage? Those senators...didn't like them getting involved but maybe they can pass a law that pro sports leagues must negotiate a year before contract expires or somesuch so us fans are never at risk. Off on a tangent...

The only logical conclusion I heard was a quip that that ref was dying to signal a winning TD in an NFL game, his lifelong dream. Nothing else really makes sense.
