I thought I would created a thread discussing keeper leagues. My intention is to get some strategy feedback from leagues that keep a small amount of players from year to year. However, I realize that almost every keeper league is different so I thought the best way to do this would be to post your keeper league setup (scoring, size, keeper rules), any strategies you have found that may differ (or stay exactly the same) from good old redraft leagues, and any questions you have for the upcoming year. I'll go first:
Setup: 12 team league, 17man roster, standard scoring except 6pts for passing TD, 0PPR. 1QB, 2RB, 3WR, 1TE, 1D, 1K.
You are allowed to keep 3 players per year any position which were originally drafted AFTER THE 4TH ROUND. Once you have a player there's no time limit to how long you can keep him except you can't keep WWpickups or dropped players. This league will be in it's third year in '06.
Strategy: One of the key's to this league is getting the top rookie Rbs with the first picks in the 5th round. LJ, Cadillac, Jackson, K. Jones and McGahee are now keepers due to this. If you don't have a keeper RB who's starting it is very difficult to get two in the first 2 rounds.
In all it appears that 1/2 of the first 48ADP picks have become keepers throughout the last 2 years. Besides the Rbs I mentioned above, nearly every ADP third round pick is now a keeper. This means if you have a late first round pick/early second, You've got a good chance of getting a true 1st/2nd round player. Trading up 5 or 6 picks in the 2nd round could be the difference between 15-18 picks in a redraft league. So I will be definately trying to move up in the second round this year.
Question: For '06 I need to decide to keep 3 of the following 4 players. Benson, Wayne, Rhodes, E. Manning. I really think Manning may be the player to let go. Just like Redraft leagues I can always target a 12-15 ranked QB later in the draft who might put up similar numbers to Eli. Since both Benson and Rhodes are potentially in RBBC, it may be better to keep both for the RB depth then end up having to start only one of them next to my first round RB. On the other hand, If Eli turns into the next Peyton, it will stink knowing I let him go? But that also means I'll have to commit one of my 3 keeper spots to a QB for the next 10 years instead of going RB, RB, WR. Anybody else out there in a similar predicament?
Looking forward to hear what the rest of you have to say about Keeper League Strategies.
