How bad will Hopkins be under Savage? (1 Viewer)

If the QB play is bad enough, sheer volume doesn't matter.

Anyone else remember Larry Fitzgerald's 2012? When Kevin Kolb went down mid-season, he spent the rest of the year as a bit player in the live-action improv comedy that was the Skelton & Lindley Show. Here was a first-ballot HOFer in the prime of his career, and yet these were his stat lines from Weeks 7-13:

  • 7 targets, 4 catches, 29 yards
  • 11 targets, 5 catches, 52 yards
  • 12 targets, 6 catches, 74 yards, 1 TD
  • 7 targets, 1 catch (!), 11 yards
  • 12 targets, 3 catches (!!), 31 yards
  • 7 targets, 1 catch (again!), 23 yards
  • 11 targets, 1 catch, 2 yards (oh my God I can't even)
Is Savage going to be as bad as John Skelton and Ryan Lindley? I mean, God, I hope not. Nobody deserves that fate. But the point is, if he's even half that bad, you're screwed. You won't be able to start Nuk, you won't be able to trade him, and you won't be able to bring yourself to cut him.

I'd rather sell now for 50 cents on the dollar then risk not being able to sell at all after a game or two.
Where would you put Hoyer and Mallett? Because Hopkins put up WR1 numbers all season with them.

Hopkins doesn't need Savage to be good, just OK.

Last year with Savage...had stat lines of 8/87/0 and 3/43/0. Nothing to write home about, but the size sample is so small.

All I am saying is if you have him, you are panicking and need to pump the breaks. If you don't have him, go get him on the cheap.

Yeah I mentioned Lindley to Fitz on page 1. That Cards vs. Jets game in 2012 is still the worst spectacle of awful QB play that I have ever seen at the pro level. Lindley vs. Sanchez. My eyes still hurt from it.

Fwiw Indy is a perfect opponent for a crappy QB. Somewhere there's a stat on FFP allowed to QBs & WRs above their norm and Indy made lead the league. They have given up best games to several schmoes. Go look at what Bortles just did, 330 yards. I'm starting Hopkins hoping for a one week reprieve. I don't have much of an option anyway.

I'm not saying Savage is decent, but can someone tell me why he won the starting job during the preseason over Watson?  Were they afraid to throw Watson behind that o line?

Also didn't Savage play better than Brock Osweiler?  I think Nuk goes down to a WR3 value with some ups and downs.  Can't deny talent - touchdown against Seattle was a short throw and him doing the rest.  If the running game can create a threat, DB's will back off allowing him to still have value in PPR. Standard is unknown....

DeAndre Hopkins caught 6-of-16 targets for 86 yards and a touchdown in the Texans' Week 9 loss to the Colts.

Hopkins was the intended target on 36 percent of Tom Savage's attempts. Most of them were awful passes into tight coverage, though the two did get into a bit of a rhythm in the second half. Hopkins' score was a well-paced 34-yarder from Savage in the fourth quarter. He nearly had a second score minutes later, but couldn't get both feet in bounds on what would have been an absurd catch in the end zone. Hopkins' body control remains amongst the best in the league. Savage will be a drain on Hopkins' value down the stretch, but it will obviously help if he remains locked onto him. Hopkins will be in the WR1 mix for next week's game against the Rams.
Hopkins is back to his usage when he had Hoyer. Since he's basically a possession receiver+ he'll get peppered with targets and probably will need a TD or his own great talent to maintain WR1 value.

Sidenote: Every other WR on that team is effed. Miller and whomever is the TE will be ok.
