How do I use a TV as a second monitor for a desktop PC? (1 Viewer)

It looks like it's a piece of cake if I'm adding the TV to a laptop but I can't find instructions on how to add the second monitor to an existing desktop PC already with a monitor.

Suggestions? Tips? Lasagna recipes?

Newer laptops should have multiple HDMI ports.  Even older ones will generally have multiple VGA/DVI ports.

1. Open a beer

2. Put TV on desk

3. Try and plug it into the PC

4. Turn everything on

5. Fiddle with in for an hour or so, all the while cursing Microsoft

6. Give up and walk away

7. Drink another beer

Not connecting it to a laptop, that's the problem. Trying to connect it to a desktop PC with a monitor already.
There should still be multiple ports.  Are you trying to connect wirelessly?  You could use chromecast for that.

PC.  There should be at least two types of video ports.  You may need an adapter.  Then right-click the desktop and set up dual monitors in the video settings.  I assume you want to clone them.

We got it working.

We connected the main PC monitor to the tower with a VGA cable (that's the blue one with pins and screws, right?).

We then connected the TV (second monitor) to the tower with an HDMI cable.

I went in the PC settings to make the adjustments but it seemed to pick the second monitor right away.  I was able to drag Google Chrome over to the second monitor no problem.

Thanks.

Was fully expecting the ending comment to be "I am using an 'all-in-one' computer and still can't connect anything externally."
