Have a friend who spent his whole life in the States other than a few years in Eastern Europe in his 20s. His language skills are pretty good (managed to pick up a good deal of both Hungarian and Polish while he lived there, which are two totally different languages). But he's also one of those people whose accent is so egregiously bad and Americanized that when he speaks to people in their native language it sounds like he's insulting them.

Anyway, he's been back in the states for decades now but he still sometimes says "moo-ZAY-um", which drives me nuts

Never heard a 2nd way to pronounce museum. Would never have occurred to me.

Sorry for the late reply. I'm here in Italy right now so it wasn't the wee hours in the morning for me.

Anyway, couple days before leaving, I was talking to my youngest about going to see some museums while over here. And, she asked me why I was saying it the way I was.

For whatever reason, both pronunciations above sound the same to me. When you say the correct pronunciation fast enough (i.e. regular speed) , it just sounds like an "a" sound to me and I think I've always just said it that way. In fact, it was a hilarious back and forth because I asked her to say it, she'd say it the right way, and I was all "that's what I said!".

So I looked it up and found out I'm an idiot. But, it does seem there are others that say it like me, so I'm not the only one.

But, in almost 50 years of saying that word, she's the first one that's ever said anything about how I pronounce it.

Anyway, here we are.
