In my experience, 5 year olds are mystified by whistling. They think you just make a high pitched noise from their voice box and that's it.  How do you explain to them or teach them how to whistle?

You don't.  If they show interest then try to teach.  If they still want to when the cant google ways to whistle and let them try.

I learned by accident.  I was trying to blow a bubble with some gum, I blew it right out of my mouth followed by a nice whistle, and the rest was history.  The gum was a casualty of the experience.  It was left somewhere close to where Marquette Avenue joined but did not intersect with Legion Drive.
