How does one get early fantasy news on game day... (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
Ever since my son was born, I have become a fantasy football casualty. "I used to be a contenter!" Once a successful and proud Fantasy Footballer for over 20 years, I have spent the past two years wallowing in yuck. My free time is consumed spending it with my family. My wife and I had multiple miscarriages and then fertility problems before miraculously becoming pregnant and being blessed with a child. Needless to say, I cherish every minute that I have with my son. (the only reason I am posting now is that my son had no nap and crashed early)

This year has been the absolute worst. From drafting Brady despite my own reservations (the Dominator made me do it) to making boneheaded weekly moves which in retrospect were really, really stupid. No need for details. PLEASE refrain from posting the point at the shirt.

Much of it has to do with having VERY LITTLE to NO time for online research. I feel like I am trying to make decisions based on sketchy information, and then second guess myself and then third guess and screw myself into the ground trying to get things right. I used to have good instincts. I even dabbled into Costanza logic of trying to do the exact opposite of what I feel like doing!

This coupled with going to Mass an hour before game time has really left me in a lurch when trying to make game time decisions on who to start. By the way, has ESPN GameDay become as unwatchable for you as it has for me? I feel like they spend more time trying to get yucks than give information now.

I am sure my story is not unique and am now looking for suggestions from footballguys who have walked in my moccasins and are willing to share whatever shortcuts, footballguy tools you use, or WHATEVER. Since this season is toast, I would like to say that I was relegated to rooting for my home team like a normal person, but you guessed it... I am a Raiders fan.

Thank you for your support.

just kidding GB - this post is actually hitting too close to home. My first child is due Dec 31 so in a way I feel like this year is my last real shot at FF success.

In answer to the question in your title, maybe invest in a IPhone-type device if you haven't already. That way you can make last second lineup switches on the fly.

Seems to me like you have a nice life and after some trial and tribulation have been blessed. Don't sweat this hobby and enjoy these moments with your son while you can.

That said...try the Saturday vigil mass. Most are at 4:30, and by that point you dont care anymore about either the Cal or Stanford games anyway, right.

Good luck and God bless, fellow kneeler.

You can't.

You make a choice which is more important.

I started Schaub in one league today....he was fine when I left for mass....hey, big deal, it happens. This little hobby has no business taking over your real life.

To quote my pal Trainwreck, "and its not even close".

You can get one of those phones that allows programs like ESPN Fantasy Alert, and that also has internet access.. one of the top of the line blackberry's should do. That way you get updates and can change rosters all on the same phone, right from your pew. Probably want to put it on vibrate though.

I'd stop going to mass. That seems to be the problem.
:goodposting: Raiders fan, huh? No wonder you feel the need to go to mass! Seriously, it sounds like an adaptability and / or time-management issue to me. As a veteran of this bloody little gig, you know exactly what I'm talking about. I understand family concerns; you're just going to have to make some changes to the way you conduct FF business.Get your core research done by Saturday night. A mere 15 to 20 minutes of daily surfing should not have any adverse impact on your family. Squeeze in SOME kind of time before you take off Sunday for any question marks / gut feeling concerns that exist (not to mention last minute WTF's like we saw in HOU today). Shouldn't need a lot there if you know what you're looking for. Also may I suggest a Blackberry, I-Phone, etc. for last minute changes (or to at least call your commish or a wingman who can help you out) as well. Best of luck to you & your family!

For the love of god get an iphone!!!!!!!! You can get the updates and you can even set your lineups on it. Welcome to 2008 buddy.

OH SWEET IRONY! :(

I second this thought or the one where you go to Saturday Mass. That's what I would do if I still went to church on a regular basis. Or at all, really.

But like someone said, you need to set your priorities and if that 9am mass is important (you like the pastor/priest who does it, the people there or it fits with the kid's schedule) then do what you can around it and don't worry so much.

Family comes first I always say. :scared:

You could join a league where they utilize backups if a player is injured, thus saving you from the need to obsess over last-minute injuries/news. I've been a member of Scoresheet Sports for 15 years and love it.

Honestly, I think a co-owner would solve this problem. You have the knowledge. Find someone you know and like who has more time but not as much experience as you have.

Together you'll rule the world! Or maybe your local league...

Try Saturday evening mass. If that doesn't work for you perhaps you could look into a league that allows you to play backups if a player does not qualify (i.e. 5 touches or something).

As some ppl already wrote, maybe go to church mass sat evening, or at another time on sunday? I'd try checking my roster sat night to and just playing and setting my lineup to ppl that I know will play instead of taking a risk on someone that prob won't. If you lose whatever, its just a game! Real Life > this

The blackberry is cool...but you probably don't want to be on it all during mass.

You're going to have to get a co-owner in your position. Take whatever responsibilities you can (like maybe handle pickups each week), and let him (or her) handle the Sunday morning changes, etc.

Good luck...hard for some to accept, but it doesn't have to be 24/7 job to be successful.

Yes, Gameday (and ESPN in general) has become unwatchable over the last several years.

My advice to you is:

1. Find a source you trust (FBG!) and read all daily updates. That's why you pay them; to do the dirty work for you. Is it as much fun as spending hours researching, breaking down tape, etc. No. But you don't have time for that.

2. If you have a job that you spend a lot of time in the car commuting back and forth to, invest in a Sirius sat. radio and listen to NFL Radio on your commute.

3. If you work out, download the Audible and similar shows to listen to on your Ipod/Mp3 player.

4. Consider a co-owner, especially for those last minute game-time decision players.

Hope this helps. Years from now, you family will not care about the fact that you won the championship in 2008. They will care about the time you invested in them. And you will too.

:sarcasm: Most Catholic Churches have a Saturday Night mass. Ours even has a Sunday 6 p.m. mass, though I am usually too drunk to attend that one.

I'm 40 years old - overweight and bald - and I live in my parents basement.

All 7 of my fantasy football teams are dominating.

So there !

Krewe, NumNums, Down Under, and others:The 9am Mass really works well for us, (except during FFL season  ), but perhaps Sat.Mass could work out. The Blackberry/I-phone solution won't work as I don't want to pull a Homer Simpson. To me, everything has its place and checking on some players injury status during the Our Father just doesn't seem right to me.Having the night to sleep off the frustration - I feel a lot better. I posted in a moment of anger and weakness. Thank you for taking the time to help me put things in perspective. Sometimes, I let this hobby of ours consume me.Thanks again.

I understand not wanting to surf the sites on a phone during mass...

You might want to signup for the text alerts though ..... numerous sites have them and you can customize them to your team... that way if there is an issue with one of your players it gets sent to you and your not surfing around wasting time.

Or .. pray harder.

Not sure if it's been mentioned but you might want to give best ball a try. This is my first year using the format and it really simplifies Sunday mornings.

You could just call a friend to make any necessary changes to the lineup if he hears someone is not going to play.
