How does the NFL lose money by Youtube videos? (1 Viewer)

Greetings,

I've noticed that almost all of the player highlights that used to be on youtube have been taken down due to copyright infringement of the NFL. I'm just curious why the NFL would pursue this or care enough to have the videos removed. Doesn't having videos on the website equate to more or less free advertising for the league? How are they negatively impacted by it?

I remember hearing an interview about stuff like this with a high ranking official in the corporate NFL. It's not so much that they lose money, but they try to minimize unlicensed exposure and package game film as part of their own products. The logic is that if no one else has it, they would be able to sell more of either licenses or actual products (tapes, DVDs, licenses to NFL Network, etc.). IIRC, the exact quote was that "they don't want to dilute their product," and that also seems to get them more advertisers and more money per ad some how.

You're right on. In a previous job during the internet boom I had the NFL as an account. They have a full team of legal experts who basically do nothing but monitor this type of stuff. They are incredibly vigilant. They treat their logo and overall properties like Fort Knox. If anyone is using them without their authorization they will find out and will put an immediate end to it...no ifs, ands or buts about it.

you can watch most of last years highlights on nfl.com/video

though its not in a nice compiled bundle...it works in a pinch by going through game logs and checking out that weeks highlights...

just a thought~
