Andrew Marchand of the New York Post, reporting on the deliberations occurring regarding the re-schedule of this weeks Steelers v Titans game:

If the game moves to Monday, it’s expected to start at 5:00 p.m. ET, setting up an unprecedented non-Week One doubleheader, with Steelers-Titans on CBS preceding Falcons-Packers on ESPN. If the game moves to Tuesday, it will be played at 6:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. ET.

Marchand notes that CBS prefers that the game start at 7:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, in order to avoid a conflict with national programming like the CBS evening news, and the late-afternoon local news broadcasts for its various affiliates.

So here in the midst of election season, the CBS news division now trumps the CBS sports division, and tells them they would rather air the evening news than to pre-empt this for a chance to carry a prime time NFL game. 

No way this would have been the preference even a few years ago.

So here in the midst of election season, the CBS news division now trumps the CBS sports division, and tells them they would rather air the evening news than to pre-empt this for a chance to carry a prime time NFL game. 

No way this would have been the preference even a few years ago. 

They aren't choosing to air the news instead of the game, they prefer to air both instead of preempting one for the other. Plus a 5:00 ET start would mean most of the country is still at work.

It appears the actual scheduling is now a mute point with the NFL announcement this morning on the game, but I believe the original reaction still tells us something interesting.

The report didn't indicate that CBS responded wanting a later time, they indicated they were concerned that the game would conflict with the CBS Evening News and local affiliate news broadcasts.    IMO, this combined with the Week 1 Thursday night ratings being down 16% as well as the overall opening weekend being down overall from 2019, are fairly ominous indications of the beginning of a shift from what has been a massive run of the NFL having almost unlimited negotiating power with the networks and broadcasters over rights fees.

1. 5:00 Monday

2. 6:00 Tuesday

3. 7:00 Tuesday

Option 3 is the only one that allows them to broadcast the evening news and the game.  Why wouldn't they want to televise both, especially since there is not much new programming in prime time right now.

You're correct in that any of these networks will attempt to exert preference or influence that help them optimize, I agree with that. 

I just believe that had this situation arisen say 3 or 4 years ago, you would have seen CBS slobbering all over itself to take whatever timeslot the NFL dictated to it for either a chance at a Monday night or a Tuesday night prime time NFL broadcast.     Even the mere mention of a conflict with a news broadcast would have been a laughable idea.

why can't they just do 2 monday night games like they do on opening weekend?   put it on at the same time or later Monday night. what's the problem? 

Or play a daytime Monday game like baseball does. it's not like they have fans who need to get to the stadium. they can play the game at 1p.

The NFL moved a game to Wednesday in 2012 to accommodate news coverage of the 2012 Democratic convention, and they moved a game from 8:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in 2008 to accommodate news coverage of the 2008 Republican convention.

As of last week the top 10 shows for the month of September were all NFL games.

Ratings are down but it seems to me in conversations with people that only those that try to not apply context have an agenda which is usually placing blame on player kneeling or protests.  Primary factors that should have some context is we got all 4 major sports going on at once,  an election and streaming of NFL games is on the rise.
