How long did you take on paternity leave? (1 Viewer)

Heading into the start of week #4. I must say, those of you who said a month or more would be too long are nutso. This is great. Just had three weeks off which has been a huge help to my wife, get to spend time with the kid, spend time with the other kid, and got like 30 out of the 35 things done on the to-do list that I made on my last day of work.

Plus my wife has let me drink and watch football each sunday and even have one other evening out with the boys.

At this point just deciding if I am going to take 5 weeks or 6.
How's it feel to have really no substantial meaning in your workplace?
Nurses don't take their work home with them. Don't be a ####. Enjoy ghost... I'm on my leave (week 2 of 6). Wife just went back to work.
Relax everyone, my wife is an RN and just went back to school to become an NP. Just having some fun and busting some chops. I would love to be able to take some time off without having to still deal with a ton of emails and work ####. I envy that life.

And, nurses do take their work home...at least emotionally. The wife was in the ER and L&D. The worst of the L&D is 1000000 times worse than my worst day at work.

I took off the day & the day after each of my kids were born. Had to burn personal days. Both my kids were born before the Family & Medical Leave Act was passed.

How's it feel to have the worst sense of humor on FBG?

So I was initially set up for four full weeks, but the baby came early so obviously I started that two weeks early. I already had my schedule planned out to where I am off until Nov 1st. I could go back any time and boot the part time and PRN staff that are filling my shifts, but yesterday my wife asked if I would just take the full 6 weeks. 6 full weeks would use up 216 hours of my PTO. I think I have like 260, so I can do it. I told her I didn't want to, and she gave me the sad puppy dog look.

I guess the worst case scenario here is I stay home and use more PTO than I originally wanted to. Oh the horror.

Take the time and do not worry about it.

What do you think is more likely to ever happen in a worst case scenario? You wishing you spent more time at work or you wishing you spent more time with your kids?

She is taking the full 12 weeks and since she teaches the holidays don't count. Scheduled c section, so assuming all is well then I'll go into work her last full day in the hospital. Then working Monday-Tuesday only the two weeks that follow. Going to try to do five day weeks in December until Christmas week, but if the house is a disaster I've been given the green light to take off whatever Fridays i want.
Given the C section, she's really going to need you every day for at least the first week home from the hospital.

My wife is due Dec 9th (but I am thinking this one may come early). Plan now is to take the two weeks parental leave (full paid) and I have about two weeks of vacation time saved up. My boss knows that basically come Dec, I am not going to be there.

Not even a decision to make.

My wife will be taking more time off but there is a balance to be had because at some point (I forget the actual time involved) she gets half pay- so her taking all of the available time between half and no pay is not going to happen.

Whether father or mother- I say taking the time offered should be an easy decision. Unless you work at one of those tech companies where they are offering a year full paid.... that might be a little excessive and you can start to debate on not taking the FULL amount of time offered.

She's got her mom that first Monday-Tuesday. Benefits to in-laws living in the same town. If there are complications then I will just take all of Thanksgiving week off, but if it's like the last two then I should be good for Monday and Tuesday that week. I've really gotta work those two days or it's going to severely mess up my December availability at home. Like many, my work isn't done by others while I'm out; it piles up.

i've worked for my company for 16+ years. nokids.com Should I ask for extra PTO or some other incentive since I'm never going to take maternity leave?

Assuming you were actually able to take an extended stay based on what your work allowed you to take, or how much vacation time you had saved up allowed you to take.................................

I think my work allows for up to something like 10-12 weeks for paternity FMLA. No chance I would take anything remotely close to that unless some sort of unthinkable tragedy were to occur.

I could take like 8 full weeks if I really wanted to, and would get paid my usual rate for all 8 weeks, though I would be bone dry in the PTO department until I build it back up. I don't want to do that.

I was thinking of either taking 3 weeks off, or doing intermittent FMLA for 4-5 weeks where I work maybe part time hours in weeks 3-5.

I am not sure an extended time off would be good for my sanity. I would probably get a bit stir crazy after 2-3 weeks.

What did you guys do, or wish you did different?
First kid - took 4 weeks paternity (really 3 1/2 -- started to get itchy feet).

Second kid - took 2 weeks.

You are right- other people should not pay for benefits others get and you don't. So...... you really aren't a liberal, are you?
