How long does it take you to fall asleep? (1 Viewer)

I really don't spend a lot of time on my phone.  My wife, on the other hand will be on that for 4 hours after work then plop her head down and start snoring away the day.

I put the TV on to go to sleep because background noise helps drown out my racing thoughts.  I'll put The Office on and lay down.  I usually hear an entire episode before I nod off.
The one odd habit that I have is that I watch 1-2 episodes of The Office before going to bed. I use my tablet while laying on my side in bed. I've been doing this for the last 3-4 years and it's become a ritual. I have trouble falling asleep if I don't watch at least 1 episode. Weird. I know.

This is asking at night, when you lay your head down on the pillow with the intention of falling asleep, about how long does it take you to pass out?  My wife will put her head down and be asleep within a minute.  Meanwhile, I'm tossing and turning for about 30 minutes before I finally pass out.

I hate people who can fall asleep so quickly.  So jealous of them.
At least 30 minutes for me.. Most nights longer... Unless I take https://www.midnitesleep.com/  but I do worry about becoming to dependent on it so only use 2 or 3 times a week.

Wife on the other hand hits the pillow and asleep within a minute or two.

If I did this, I'd fall asleep when it was time to leave for work.  I have always been a night owl.  Can pretty much stay awake all night.  On weekends, I'll stay up to 3 or 4 am because I can read, play video games or watch TV uninterrupted.  It's so peaceful and quiet.  No noise from outside.  It's great.  I love the nighttime.
I am exactly the opposite.  I am up between 5:30-6 no matter if the alarm is set or not.  I am usually in bed by 10:30 so I get my quiet time when  everyone else is sleeping in the morning.  To your original question, 5 minutes tops.  It really upsets the Mrs. because I am out, sawing logs, snoring and grinding my teeth before she can even think about falling asleep.

I have a lot of trouble falling, and staying, asleep.  I take over the counter sleep aids (like Advil PM, but without the pain killer), plus will sometimes also take Melatonin.  Even with that, it often takes me 30 minutes+ to fall asleep.  If I don't take anything, most of the time I won't fall asleep at all.  There have been plenty of nights, Friday included, where I take sleep aids and still don't fall asleep at all.  During the week it becomes a major problem because I have to go to work on no sleep.

5-10mins tops

but then I wake up a bunch in the middle of the night worrying about random crap

Without Lunesta I have terrible insomnia. I have anxiety about falling asleep.  Mind races. I’ve tried more natural methods including CBD under the tongue, melatonin, white noise, wave machines, essential oils, etc. Even when it works I wake up to pee and often have trouble going back to sleep. With Lunesta I’m in deep sleep for 7+ hours without getting up in the middle of the night.  I’m a zombie without sleep so willing to deal with the risks

I used to have the same problem. Retiring solved that.
It's funny.

When I was active duty I'd wake up thinking about all the crap we had to do. Now as a civilian, I never do. Similar job, but a whole lot less stress.

I have a couple of loads of laundry to do tomorrow. Hope I don't wake up at 3am worrying about which fabric softener to use.

Suddenly, I'm a 1970's housewife??

I'm not good about falling asleep, and I tend to rock n' roll throughout the night.  It's helped that my wife and I now sleep in separate beds so I don't feel guilty about rolling around (it always used to drive her crazy).  I wake up to pee during the night, and I've found Melatonin helps a lot for me to get right back to sleep.  Otherwise, I'll roll around for another 30 minutes or more.  I've also taken a shot of Nyquil before going to bed, which has about the same effect as the Melatonin.

I'm a superb 15-20 minute napper, though, and do so almost every day.

I can typically fall asleep very quickly. The fact that I work most every other night and then stay up throughout the day helps. I sleep well each night in between. But even at work, if I get a chance to sleep a bit, I fall asleep quickly despite having to get up multiple times throughout the night.

The ONLY time I have a hard time falling asleep is if I can tell my wife is not sleeping well and due to my moving around. Then I can't relax and get back to sleep. I almost always wake up a few times during the night to readjust covers or pillows but fall right back asleep.

I'll have a hard time falling asleep probably 3-4 nights per week. When I've tossed and turned enough and gotten frustrated, I start slowly counting backwards from 100. I rarely make it to 60 or so. On the rare occasion when I get to 0, I just start again. I've never made two full countdowns.

I’m in a terrible cycle right now, or at least the last month or so:

Monday - Wednesday nights - try to go to sleep by “listening to my body” and end up falling asleep quickly, but waking up after a few hours and listen to the wheels in my head spin for 4-5 hours before finally zonking again around 5:00 am and sleeping for 90 minutes before waking up for the day.

Thursday/Friday nights - so frustrated & irritable at no decent sleep for three days, I end up resorting to Advil PM or a shot of NyQuil to get some decent REM and actually wake up not wanting to strangle someone. Yay.

Saturday/Sundays - been partying with friends and family, which leads to poor sleep, waking up to whizz, etc. and poor sleeping.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

I know there are a few issues which are contributing to this currently, and will hopefully be resolved soon. But GD, it’d be nice to put a head on a pillow at 11:00 pm, and wake up at 6:00 without interruption.

Will read my kindle paperwhite with the lights off until I can't keep my eyes open, only takes about 5-10 minutes, then takes me a minute to fall asleep.

It’s colder in Wisconsin but I currently have four big blankets on my bed. The more weight the better. I can fall asleep and wake up in the same position most nights. I’ve seen 15lb blankets for sale but that would mean I might have to lose a layer. Nope. Just have to wear your body down each day and not eat too much and bam, asleep.

I used to have problems getting to sleep, but meditation has changed that for me this past year. There are lots of free apps. I like Insight Timer. Many 10 to 20 minute breathing exercises and meditations that put me out quickly. Yoga Nidra is my go to.

Pro tip: Drink more.

This just results in non-restorative sleep. Same for antihistamines, the active ingredient in things like Tylenol/Advil PM/Nyquil.

As for the OP, it takes me a while, usually 30+minutes and I wake up a few times a night.

95% of the time I'm out within 5 mins. Then I'll have like every 2-3 months this bizarre couple of nights where I can't get to sleep for ####. I'll toss and turn the entire night.

5 - 10 minutes.  I like to sleep as little as possible  so I usually find myself waking early (between 4 - 5) so by 10pm I'm typically tired and fall asleep easily.

I can also fall asleep on airplanes easy peasy.  If I don't get at least 5 hours I find myself feel almost hung over though.  6 1/2 - 7 is perfect.

I fall asleep very quickly, which pisses my wife off to no end.  I'm usually in bed around 9pm.  Read for 30-60 minutes, then go to sleep.  Once I decide to go to sleep I'm out quick.  I have no problem shutting down the mind at the end of the night and going to sleep.

However, when I wake up in the middle of the night it sometimes takes me a while to get back to sleep.  If I wake up too much, then I start thinking about all the stuff I have to do that day.  I try hard to stay half asleep for the middle of the night piss.

How long do you nap?
20 minutes
i have a little window every night between work and heading out the next thing and i usually spend about 10 to 15 in my chair getting some quick zs and then bam i am refersherated and i am back up and running sometimes even the finest tuned engine needs a little siesta that is how i look at it bromigos take that to the bank

Maybe I'm wired different but anything less than 4 hours throws me off for the rest of the day.  I never take naps and can't even sleep on airplanes unless it's a redeye.   I envy you guys.

different every night
For me too, as others have said, the mind is racing and that keeps me awake. I tend to go to bed around midnight, since I don't have to be awake until 8ish to start getting kids to school. Once I'm asleep, I don't tend to wake up until I have too. Although I love waking up after feeling like I've been asleep for hours and finding out it's only 2:30 or so. Very nice!

Second the Kindle sleep aid.

Generally fall asleep after a few pages.
I have an iPad that I keep by my bed that I use like these guys. Although I usually will do a crossword puzzle or two (easiest levels) and then move over to reading. Usually I am reading a book that I have read before, so that it is sort of like the white noise for my head that The Office is for @TheIronSheik.

I like that one of the more recent changes to the iOS has made it so at night the lighting is further down, so that it isn't as big of a distraction.

Having a new TemperPedic has helped with falling asleep, since I don't tend to have to roll over as often.

Between hypo-thyroidism and back and knee problems, I have a ton of trouble getting to sleep.   Every night I take 6mg of Melatonin, 2 allergy pills and 1 Aleve.   It is then about 90 minutes until I know I should be able to get to sleep. I have the timing down.

It BLOWS.

6mg of Melatonin
My son started taking Malatonin about 6 months ago as he has always had difficulty getting to sleep.  Since he started taking it, however, he is sleeping in 15 minutes or less.  it's been a godsend for him.

As for me I fall asleep really quickly usually.  Less than 5 minutes.  If I am over tired it takes longer - eyes water, yawning every 5 seconds - but on a normal night it's super easy, barely an inconvenience.

It takes me anywhere from 30 min to an hour to fall asleep.  My routine is to get in bed at 10, watch one episode of whatever show I'm on (currently rewatching The Wire), go pee and take meds, and lights off at 11:00.  I end up catching midnight on the clock about half the time before I'm out.  Just can't turn my brain off. Counting sheep, I'll end up with 500 of them.

Wife has a switch behind her ear I think.  She'll close her eyes and be comatose in 1-2 minutes.  Drives me crazy, I'm so jealous

That's not the question that was asked.

ETA - As for the OP, I fall asleep almost instantly, most nights.

Use to take at least 30 mins with a lot of tossing through the night. Picked up a 15lb weighted blanket during Black Friday. Sleep in 5 mins and I don’t toss anymore. Complete night sleep. Game changer

been trying to find one of these for my 9 year old but can't find one small enough.  glad to hear it works. i think it can be a big benefit for her as well but we haven't heard any direct testimony from other users.

Yeah, I don't get the counting sheep.  That will keep me awake.  That gets my brain racing.

Wife and I bought one each for Black Friday, too.  My biggest complaint is that they are only 7x4 feet or something stupid.  I love the feel of it, but I still roll over a lot before passing out trying to find the right spot, and it's a pain in the butt that any movement results in a 6'2" man being only half covered.  Other than that, we both think it's good.

Ours are 18 pounds and at first they felt strange.  A week into the experiment and I feel like they're not as heavy anymore.  I guess you get used to it after a while.

I'm a night owl myself and like to stay up late, but when I decide to go to bed, I can be asleep within 2 to 3 minutes.  I tell my wife I just have an off switch I throw in my brain.  She is a night owl as well, but it takes her an hour or several to fall asleep ... and that's with sleeping medication.  She says her brain just won't stop.

I can also take a nap at the drop of a hat.  Right now, I could lean back in my desk chair and be asleep within a few minutes.  When we travel, if I get tired I pull into a rest area and set my phone for 10 minutes.  My wife says I am snoring within 90 seconds.

That said, on the rare night when I do have an issue falling asleep, or am jolted awake by something (barking dog or loud truck passing the house), I am up the rest of the night.

Easily within minutes.  And I sleep deep and completely.
If I have to get up to pee..which happens...I crawl back into bed and am out hard again within minutes.

I realize it's a gift and I am thankful for it actually.  I love sleep.

When I was a kid I had a hard time falling asleep. Same as some of you guys, thoughts were racing through my mind. I started to wipe my mind clear by concentrating on seeing the inside of my eyelids and no other thoughts. It's hard at first but every time another thought comes to mind push it away and concentrate only on seeing the inside of your eyelids. It's really cool I see something similar to the static analog TVs display when there's no signal only a darker version. At first it would still take a while to go to sleep but after a while it would take less and less time. Now I can instantly go to sleep whenever my body is ready.

I take 10-20 minute naps after lunch and sleep 7 to 9 hours a night. I only use an alarm for my naps.
