How long does it take you to start work? (1 Viewer)

SUPER ELITE UPPER TIER
You walk through the office doors, plop yourself in your seat, fire up the computer, and...

Are you jumping right into work?  Are you milling around and getting coffee?  Are you on some fantasy football message board?

For me, it can take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes to get the creative juices flowing.  Now, if there's some sort of emergency, that's different.  But I'm talking about a day where nothing is happening and you are just doing your normal, everyday work.

About 5 seconds...check email, check Slack, go from there.
Wow.

Ok.  I might check my email.  But I'm not reacting to it right away, unless it's an emergency.  But then that wouldn't be included in this question.

So if you took checking email out of the equation, would your answer still be the same?

30 - 60 mins normally...  I check in here, look at the WSJ, glance at new emails to make sure nothing is on 'fire', etc...  but some days I'm not sure I ever start before lunch.

Work from home and in the field.

Feed pets, then start checking emails and reports in when I wake up, along with mild FF website browsing. Coffee is thrown in as well.

Pick a spotify mix then start working - I set outlook reminders in advance to remind me what to do first thing. I will breeze through email just to see if anything is in need of immediate response, but otherwise the first hour of my day is usually the most productive one. Everyone else doesn't start to wander into the office until about now, so I can't get distracted.

Yeah. Now, once I've checked in on everything I might spend some time over at FBG or elsewhere but I always get caught up and handle everything outstanding 1st thing.

I get in around 9:45 and have a team status meeting at 10 so I won't really start working until after that ends at 10:30.   I'll check email prior to the meeting but that's just b/c sometimes the meeting gets postponed until 10:15.

I have a few morning tasks that take about 45-60 minutes.  These are pretty boring straight forward items.  I jump right into these even before deleting useless emails.  After that is when I ease into FBGs and figuring out what to do next.

Sitting in my office in my PJs with a cup of coffee.

Can't really tell you if I have started working yet or not.

Well, I generally come in at least fifteen minutes late, I use the side door - that way Lumbergh can't see me, and, uh, after that I just sorta space out for about an hour. I just stare at my desk; but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch, too. I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work.

Can't believe it took that long for someone to post this.  🙂

Work from home too, so while my day might not start right at 8am, it also doesn’t quite end. There will be days where I won’t walk upstairs to the office til after lunch, but there are also days where I get an email at 11pm and run upstairs for an hour or two. I kind of view it as just being on call, if there’s work to do I do it.  If not, I’m hanging out.

Usually about 30 minutes.  I get in a little earlier than most to beat the traffic and browse the web for a while.  Working from home today due to the weather.  Getting a later start today because people at the office aren't making it in at their regular times or staying home also.

I love working from home when we are busy, but the slow time of year (now) can be a grind.  I love having things to do, but not looking for things to do.  I probably have a total of 30 minutes of work to do today.

I arrive a good hour before anyone else. I'll definitely read my email right away and maybe take a quick walk around the data center to make sure everything is in order. After that, I go through my usual internet circuit. My email really dictates my day to day work, so it all depends upon what the day brings.

Walk in the door

Turn on work computer

Turn on personal laptop

Get coffee

Refresh my college basketball spreadsheet

Analyze the day's slate of games

Make bets

Check email for urgent requests

Check FBG forums

Check various reddits

Lunch

Do some work

Check FBG forums

Check various reddits

Go home

Work from home. In sales.

Typically I have 6-7 scheduled calls throughout the day. First one is at 8 or 9am. Last one ends around 3-5pm.

I get to my desk at 7:45, respond to emails, headset goes on and I’m talking all day.

It's funny that my work life has kinda become this.

I used to stop at my parents' house (which is on the way to work) once a week to lay down on their couch and catch some extra zzz's.  Now I'm doing it 3-4 times a week.  So I'm rolling into the office at 9:30.

I usually fire things up pretty quick, though.  Open up the email and see if there are any fire drills.  If not, I make a cup of coffee and get my Pandora going on my phone.

I'd say I get through my emails from the prior evening and that morning in 10-15 minutes, maybe a little more.  Once I'm caught up with zero unread emails, I hop on here and start browsing.

My work day consists of dealing with emails as they pop up and browsing here.  There are some days when you clowns actually work and don't give me enough to read.

Hour lunch at 1pm, and I'm out the door at 4ish.

Get in by 7 (out at 3:30), I'm one of the first in the building. If I get in by 645 I can get one of the prime parking spots right outside my window.

Turn on the computer, log in. Get dressed. Check emails for anything vital, then make coffee. Check in here and fb.

30-60 minutes after getting in I'll probably get to real work. Unfortunately by that time two others in the office arrive and I'll get distracted talking with them for a while.

My days vary... typically leave the house around 8:30-9:30. I am up between 5a and 7a depending upon the day.

let dog out.

fire up comp.

feed pets.

get coffee going.

check for emergencies.

start running reports and market analysis.

Get ready.

I work from home when I’m not traveling and usually only travel for a few days each month now,   I have my computer set up at the kitchen table in the morning and jump on answering emails as soon as I log on.  This is between 630 and 7.   I make sure my daughter gets on the bus at 740, walk the dog for 20 minutes, and then return to work.  I am not really a pleasant morning person but have always gone 100% as soon as I wake.   Guessing growing up on a farm is to blame.

I started around 10 today.   Knocking off now.  May work another hour or so later.  Solid 3 hours today.   If I keep that up I'll exceed my yearly goal by quite a bit.

15 to 30 minutes sounds about right... I read work emails, then check Gmail and here.. By then :coffee: kicks in and I start working on the days tasks.

Roll out of bed. Login and check email. Get wife's breakfast ready. Check projects for the day. She leaves. Try to get some things done before kids wake up. Get them ready for school. Have a morning call at 8am. Get to school after that. Then more meetings around 9 when I get back. Helps that I'm in sweatpants and hoodie for my work day.

Start around 7:30 and get right into it after grabbing my coffee. I don’t do FBG or anything similar at work. I blame my father for my inability to slack.

I'm an electrician, so I start about 30 seconds after walking in the door to the building under construction.

Usually right away. Sit at the computer and start reading/sending emails, printing out any last minute things I need and get started on my projects for the day until the kids come for 1st hour. There’s not much downtime so you have to get your work done when you have the chance because the kids don’t allow for free time.

Depends. I can arrive with a bunch of work waiting, or have nothing for hours. It’s really feast or famine. Most days I have 15-30 minutes to get my act together.

This is such a shark move. I love getting paid for sitting on the throne at work. But my routine demands poop then shower so my first #2 of the day is never on the clock. I envy you.
I usually get a second wind about now as others settle into their own work before the 10 am porcelain throne break. Whether I actually get back on track again once returning is a different story.

Didn't start work at all today.  Got up, ####, showered, shaved.  Drove to work...  sat in the parking lot and decided I just couldn't face another day at that job.  Called in sick.  At home now smoking joints.

This is how I feel.  But since I just started this job a year ago, I don't have much PTO.  So on those days like you described, I have to suck it up, think of my family, and go in the office.

It sucks.

Yeah, I've been sucking it up for 20 years at this job, now.  It pays more than anything I'll find elsewhere, but I doubt I have another year of it left in me.

Totally depends on what is going on.  Last month, my coworker broke her ankle walking on a sidewalk.  I would get to my desk in the morning, log on and work through the early stuff for about 2 hours solid before I really took a breath or got my caffeine.

Yesterday, because it's mid month and my coworker is back, I got my Mountain Dew, ate an apple, read a bunch of stupid forum stuff, listened to about half of a Rogan podcast, and maybe did 30 minutes of work around that.
