How Long Will Favre Take To Decide? (1 Viewer)

I'll preface this by stating I own Favre in a newly aqcuired dynasty team.

I don't think it is unreasonable to assume that he will come back for another season if the team makes some moves to be competitive. The NFC North is, outside of Chicago, wide open for a wild card berth. I don't think Green Bay can win the Super Bowl but can get to a Wild Card game with some good FA signings and some luck.

It is not out of the realm for them to sweep Detroit and Minnesota, split with Chicago and go .500 against the rest of the league. That might even win them the division. Yes a lot of things must fall in place but it is possible. Is it probable-maybe- but that possibility might be all it takes for Favre to come back for one last shot.

I think it irks him to go out with such a negative season as last and he wants a reason to come back to redeem himself in some fashion. I'm cautiously optimistic that he'll come back.

It is very important that the Packers know Favre's intentions as soon as free agency starts (and who knows when the he!! that will be). This is especially true if the Packer's are truly interested in Brees, as a lot of "experts" have hypothesized.

If Brees is released, you know dang well that there will be a few teams throwing offers right off the bat. The Packers are going to have to act fast and not be hung up on Favre's decision.

A couple of thoughts:

1. When the topic of a player's retirement comes up as much as it does here, is it not an indication that it is, in fact, time to retire? Is this the reason Favre is always asked this question -- people want him to retire before his skills really begin to erode -- which is another way of saying he has crested the hill and is heading down the other side?

2. I heard Favre on an ESPN radio interview about a year ago and when asked he was very quick and confident in his reply that he would play "at least a couple more years". Things of course change and may have changed his outlook, but I think his heart is still telling him to play. If it wasn't, he would have announced his retirement by now. I think he comes back.

I would not be surprised to see Favre playing somewhere other than Green Bay next year. You would think that would never happen, but who would have thought we would see Joe Montana in a Chiefs uniform, Tim Brown in a Bucs uniform or Jerry Rice in a Seahawks jersey?

There is no decision more personal than when to retire. There is no reason Favre should care one bit what people on footballguys.com think--people who, for the most part, never were in the position of having to confront mortality at the age of 36.

Brett has said on numerous occasions he will not play for another team. Seems the only people who are sreaming for a decision are the fans. the team has been quiet about it and says no hurry. Maybe they already know or just not wanting to pressure him. Wait and see what happens over the weekend

Brett Favre is the center of the Packers' universe. He's not just some other old player playing some other position. If that were the case, considering his level of play relative to his income, he would have already been cut. He SHOULD be atleast a little considerate towards what Packers fans think and care about them. They care about him and have made it possible for him to lead a pretty comfortable lifestyle. He knows this. But as he goes, so goes that organization. His decision will set off a chain reaction in that orgainization that will be felt for years. Replacing him wont be easy, but at this point his role reminds me of the role Cal Ripken, Jr. had his last few years with the Orioles. You knew he was far past his prime, and he'd flash the brilliance every once in a while, but overall you knew basically that there was someone either within the organization or that you could bring in that would actually give the team a better chance of winnning. But you dont just kick guys like Ripken or Favre to the curb. You suck it up and let them do what they want because you owe it to them for years of PAST excellence. What makes it easier for Favre to prolong his decision each offseason is the absence of a real owner or dominant voice within the organization. Could you imagine pulling this offseason, "Im not sure if I really have it in me" BS with someone like Jerry Jones or Al Davis or even Dan Rooney....making THAT KIND OF LOOT?? He'd be gone. "Thanks for the memories...its been nice....good luck in your travels and dont let the door hit you on the way out". I for one just hope he calls it a day atleast after this year if not now. Ive loved watching him play thru the years. He's old school and tough and a winner, but lately he looks more selfish and OLD and unable to have FUN week in and week out. He'll come back for one more season imo and break alot of Marino's records this year and walk away. And we'll all miss him. And....the Packers will probably be a little better off for it.

I have read that his agent, Bus Cook, indicated they would have no problems working with the Packers to push back that bonus. Today is the date that bonus was to be paid.

I've heard that he is slated to show up at Green Bay's annual Fan Fest, which if I'm not mistaken is this coming weekend. It was at this Fan Fest last year that he made it known he'd be coming back. If he does indeed attend, look for an announcement. And imo, why come to Fan Fest at all, much less make an announcement, if not to announce a return for 2006.

The Packers Fan Fest begins Friday and QB Brett Favre isn't expected to attend. The first Fan Fest last year happened right after Favre announced he would play another season. Favre said as recently as last week that he hasn't decided if he'll play again. And, he's hinted that the decision might not come until after the NFL Draft in late April.

I think he'll announce his decision sometime between a couple weeks after the start of free agency and the NFL draft. I also think he'll play, and will announce it will be his last year. Fla\/\/ed is right that the retirement questions have to stop if he returns, and announcing it will be his last year is the only way to do that. He'd also get to enjoy the opportunity to say his goodbyes around the league in style this way.

NFL Network's Adam Shefter reports the Packers expect an answer from Brett Favre about his future by roughly April 1st.

Shefter reports that the Packers don't have to pay Favre his roster bonus until the start of the season, so it's not a factor here. The longer the situation drags out the more likely it looks that Favre will return.

He's certainly earned the right to take his time. Going through training camp, learning another system, playing with a new group of players, etc. is a ton of work. Add to that an aging body, that is getting more difficult to fine tune, and you can understand why Favre hasn't made up his mind yet. People in any sport don't become "elite" without an extreme level of personal confidence. Brett has to be toying with this inner confidence and desire to compete and all of the hurdles he must go through to go through another season. Give him his time, and either be thankful for all he poured onto the field while he played or root for him to have a better season than last (unless you are a Bears/Vikings fan), to add to his legacy.
