How many rookie QBs have won their first playoff game on the road? (1 Viewer)

Granted the Jets have a good defense and a great running game, but just exactly how rare is what Mark Sanchez accomplished today?

Busy with a baby so I don't have time to follow up with the research...but looks like there have only been 10 rookie QBs who have started a playoff game since 1970. Winners were Pat Hayden, Shaun King, Big Ben and Flacco. Not sure if the first two were road wins, but still pretty rare feat.

ETA: Flacco was the first? So Sanchez is the 2nd

FIRST GAME

ON THE ROAD

Is that clear now?

OK, I don't think Pat Haden was a rookie...looks like he was drafted in 1975 but did not play a down, his playoff start was in 1976. King and Roethlisberger won their first playoff games at home.

Dan Marino 1983 0-1

Bernie Kosar 1985 0-1

Jim Everett 1986 0-1

Todd Marinovich 1991 0-1

Shaun King 1999 1-1

Ben Roethlisberger 2004 1-1

Joe Flacco 2008 2-1

Matt Ryan 2008 0-1

Mark Sanchez 1-0

Of course, if we're talking about the 09 Jets or 05 Steelers or 08 Ravens, these are all teams that displayed a strong running game and great defense. I think its pretty clear that those elements can win in the playoffs even when the QB is a rookie. What would be interesting is to find a rookie QB that led a mediocre defense and running game into the playoffs and carried them to a win.
