How much money was lost on the Harbaugh Decision (1 Viewer)

Relax guy, I was only thinking about the people that lost, geez.

Why was money "lost"? For the most part Vegas tries to keep the money even on both sides, so they wouldn't care much. For all we know, Vegas may have "won" money with Harbaugh's decision cause less payout was on Seattle's side. There's also the people who "won" the bet by taking Seattle plus the points

But what about the people who won? They don't exist? Or imagine how bad those people would have felt if they didn't take the safety but how happy they are now.

I thought teams had to punt after a safety, making an onsides kick impossible.
Punt is not required. It can be kicked from the ground like a kickoff. It is a free kick either way, just like a kickoff.

i am so very confused by this statement and this one:

"He declined the penalty because it assured the win"

they are both in error

the ONLY chance he had of losing that game was to decline the penalty and fumble one of the 1 or 2 victory formation snaps (43sec) with SEA one score away (1 in 10000? chance - it has happened twice before i believe in NFL history ... Rivers a few years ago and Eagles/Giants 30+yrs ago)

accepting the penalty assured the victory... i'm estimating about the same chance of losing as lightning striking a primordial soup of carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen and creating our one-celled ancestor, the equivalent of 1 chance in 10 to the 50th power (which in science is defined loosely as impossible) that he could have lost up 9 with SEA starting from their 30yd line that all of the following could happen with 43 sec and no timeouts ... a successful onside recovery of the free kick, one 30yd gain, one run up to spike ball, one 57 yd successful FG, another successful onside recovery, one hail mary with simultaneous possession awarded to SEA

/run-on sentence
You're just wrong. Once he declined the penalty, the game was over. No one has EVER lost out of the victory formation. Your two examples are both wrong. The Miracle at the Meadowlands involved a fumbled handoff, and Rivers' fumble was when they were driving deep in Chiefs territory in a tie game. As impossible as it would be for Seattle to come back from 9 down starting with the free kick, there were more ways for that to happen than for them to win down 7 with Alex kneeling on the ball. Then add on top of that the fact that the victory formation doesn't involve trotting your defense and special teams players out for more plays, and it's really a no-brainer.Now what I want to know is this: Harbaugh was allowed to see the results of the measurement before making his decision. The ball is short, so he declines the penalty. But then they go to the booth review on the spot. If the review had actually resulted in re-spotting the ball for a first down, would Harbaugh have been given the option to accept the penalty at that point? I'm assuming he would have been, but if not, then you clearly need to accept the penalty and not gamble on the outcome of the replay review.
Well done sir. Couldn't have said it any better.

Ya. Harbaugh definitely used the vegas lines as his deciding factor when making that call.

Do people think before they speak(type)?

When Seattle was in their 5 year streak of being the winningest NFC team, I strongly suspected Holmgren was playing the point spread. So many times they'd be up a good chunk and he would go ultra-conservative and whaddya know? A lot of those times, Seattle didn't cover. Obviously just a circumstantial observation but after awhile, giving up big leads late in games got to be very curious because he didn't seem to be learning from the times when conservative playing actually cost them the game.

Hey man, try not to be a cynical jerk ok? As the OP I assumed everyone would know I didn't really think Harbaugh was playing with Vegas. Now go back to beating your puppy.

You can onside on free kicks. Fair catch can be called by receiving team but it is not a play practiced much. all the kicking team has to do is kick the ball 10 yards on a pooch punt and then you can recover it. It actually could be easier to recover a free kick by the kicking team if they knew what they were doing.

So if the game can be over why give Seattle another chance to get the ball back on a crazy free kick where you need your hands team and a injury could easily occur?

He made the right call.
